IST1101: TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS

OBJECTIVES
1. To provide language training to the Information Sciences students which will enable them to
understand and acquire knowledge in technical subjects.
2. To provide an adequate mastery of communicative English Language training primarily - reading and
writing skills, secondarily listening and speaking skills.
3. To equip them with writing skills needed for academic as well as workplace situations
4. To make them acquire language skills at their own pace by using e-materials and language lab
component
5. To learn emerging technologies in this course

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Understand basic grammar principles
2. Write clear and coherent passages
3. Write effective letters for job application and complaints
4. Prepare technical reports and interpret graphs
5. Enhance reading comprehension
6. Comprehend English speech sound system, stress and intonation

UNIT I – INTRODUCTION
How to communicate technically through writing and oral presentations, Communication Networks:
formal (Chain network, Ynetwork, Wheel network, Circle network, All channel network) and informal
networks (Single strand, Gossip, Probability, Cluster).

UNIT II – AUDIO AND VISUAL AIDS
Analysis/critique visual and audio images or literature according to modern standards, Power point
presentations and related graphical communication principles are applied.

UNIT III COMMUNICATION THEORY


Major theories e.g. Shannon’s computer mediated communication, Channels of communication; concept
of channel richness, The communication process, steps, communication barriers or ‘noise’, Oral
presentations – language medium for professional communication, guidelines and techniques of
conducting job interviews.

UNIT IV: GROUP DYNAMICS


Basic nature of groups, processes and development of work group dynamics, Application in the writing
of specific technical documents such as Assignments, tests, examination, letters of different nature, notes
of various characteristics, electronic and online literature, resumes of variety of categories, and other short
forms of writing.

UNIT V VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION PROCESSES


The process of writing including verbal and nonverbal formats, grammar, barriers in writing and
contextualization of technical writing.

UNIT VI: MODELS OF TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION


Models of technical communication and their application in science and technology, components of
technical communication, and fundamental principles of technical communication.
