✓ Multimeter
✓ resistors
✓ capacitors
✓ inductors
2
Objective:
➢ Be familiar with the basic electrical components ‘resistors,
capacitors, and inductors’.
➢ Differentiate between the basic electrical components.
➢ How to read electrical components using different methods.
Background:
Digital-multimeter: is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical
values—principally voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). It
is a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical/electronic
industries.
Resistors:
Resistance “R” is an electrical value with unit ‘ohm’ and symbolized as ‘Ω’,
there is one ohm ‘1Ω’ of resistance when one ampere ‘1A’ of current flows
in
a material with one volt ‘1V’ of potential difference applied to it’s terminal.
Fixed resistors come in various types like carbon composition and have set
resistance values. They are mechanically robust but have drawbacks like
3
high noise and decreasing ohmic values with frequency. Their values are
determined by color bands.
Inductors:
4
Inductance (L) is measured in Henry (H). Inductors resemble resistors but
have very low internal resistance (<30Ω). To distinguish, use a multimeter:
if readings vary significantly, it's an inductor; otherwise, it's a resistor.
Capacitors:
Capacitors store electric charge and are measured in Farads (F). They
come in polarized (electrolytic) and unpolarized types. Electrolytic
capacitors have clear markings for capacitance and voltage, while small
value capacitors use letter or number codes (e.g., 104 for 100nF).

Conclusion:
In conclusion, Experiment #1 on basic electrical components in circuits
provided valuable insights into the fundamental elements that form the
foundation of electronic circuits. We explored resistors, inductors, and
capacitors, understanding their characteristics, units of measurement, and
practical applications. This experiment not only enhanced our knowledge of
these components but also laid the groundwork for future experiments and
a deeper understanding of electrical circuits.
