1
Introduction:
We will learn in this lab about 1 device and the basic electrical components
✓ Multimeter

✓ resistors

✓ capacitors

✓ inductors

2
Objective:
➢ Be familiar with the basic electrical components ‘resistors,
capacitors, and inductors’.
➢ Differentiate between the basic electrical components.
➢ How to read electrical components using different methods.

Background:
Digital-multimeter: is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical
values—principally voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). It
is a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical/electronic
industries.

Resistors:

Resistance “R” is an electrical value with unit ‘ohm’ and symbolized as ‘Ω’,
there is one ohm ‘1Ω’ of resistance when one ampere ‘1A’ of current flows
in
a material with one volt ‘1V’ of potential difference applied to it’s terminal.

Fixed resistors come in various types like carbon composition and have set
resistance values. They are mechanically robust but have drawbacks like

3
high noise and decreasing ohmic values with frequency. Their values are
determined by color bands.

Variable resistors include potentiometers (three terminals) and rheostats

(two terminals) for manual or automatic adjustment. Resistors are also
classified by power rating, with carbon composition resistors typically
ranging from 1/8 to 2 watts, while thermal resistors can handle up to 25
watts and have resistance values marked on them.

Inductors:

4
Inductance (L) is measured in Henry (H). Inductors resemble resistors but
have very low internal resistance (<30Ω). To distinguish, use a multimeter:
if readings vary significantly, it's an inductor; otherwise, it's a resistor.

Capacitors:

Capacitors store electric charge and are measured in Farads (F). They
come in polarized (electrolytic) and unpolarized types. Electrolytic
capacitors have clear markings for capacitance and voltage, while small
value capacitors use letter or number codes (e.g., 104 for 100nF).

PROCEDURE:-
Part 1 Resistors :

Resistor number 1 :

1. Color bands of the resistor: gray ,red , brow , gold .

2. Resistance value in ohm: 834Ω

Calculate The percentage Error in R1 :

820
min = 82 ⋅ 10 − 5% = 820 − = 779 Ω
5

820
𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 820 + = 861 Ω
5

5
|𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜−𝐸𝑥𝑝| |820−834|
⋅ 100% ⋅ 100%
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜 820

= 1.707 %

Resistor number 2:
1. Resistance value in ohm:1017kΩ
Calculate The percentage Error in R1 :

|𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜−𝐸𝑥𝑝| |1.017−1|
⋅ 100% ⋅ 100% = 1.7%
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜 1

Part 1 inductors:

1. Color bands of the inductor: red, red, red, silver

2. inductance value in mH:22 ⋅ 105

Calculate The percentage Error in inductor:

|𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜−𝐸𝑥𝑝| |22⋅105−21⋅105|
⋅ 100% ⋅ 100%
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜 22⋅105

= 4.545 %

Part 3 capacitors:

Capacitor number 1:

1. Type of the capacitor: polrized

6
2. Code of the capacitor if exist: none

3. Value of the capacitor: 2.2𝑀𝑓

Capacitor number 2:

1. Type of the capacitor: unpolrized

2. Code of the capacitor if exist:102

3. Value of the capacitor: 10 ⋅ 102 𝑝𝑓 = 1𝑛𝑓

Conclusion:
In conclusion, Experiment #1 on basic electrical components in circuits
provided valuable insights into the fundamental elements that form the
foundation of electronic circuits. We explored resistors, inductors, and
capacitors, understanding their characteristics, units of measurement, and
practical applications. This experiment not only enhanced our knowledge of
these components but also laid the groundwork for future experiments and
a deeper understanding of electrical circuits.
