Text One – Opinion article: The family holiday worth forgetting

Last holidays our family crossed The Tasman Sea to visit the land of the long white cloud – New
Zealand. It was to be a fun, family holiday. Unfortunately it turned out to be a disaster. Anything that
could go wrong certainly did.

First there was the traffic to the airport. A huge smash on the M5 meant we were over an hour late. We
were squashed like sardines for hours in a queue that stretched for over twenty kilometres. I couldn’t
believe we still had to pay the toll for all that sitting. We helplessly listened to the warnings not to go
on the motorway but it was all too late.

Amazingly we somehow made it to the airport just in time. We rushed through Customs and onto the
plane. We breathed a sigh of relief and thought the worst was over. Unfortunately that was not the case.
A malfunction was discovered just as we were about to cruise to the runway. Three hours later we
hadn’t moved an inch. We’d been served lots of bad coffee, offered many apologies but the kids were
fed up and so was I.

Our arrival to New Zealand saw us weary and strained. The people at the car rental stand had waited
for our flight but our paperwork was lost. Of course it was. We took the only car they had which could
fit us and the kids. There was nothing wrong with the car but we were nearly stacked on top of each
other; it wasn’t the large vehicle we’d ordered. We couldn’t pull a trick.

Our drive to the hotel was uneventful but we were very late. By the time we arrived the restaurant was
closed. We found a nearby McDonalds and the kids were ecstatic. But it was the exact same menu as
home – hardly worth the international flight to eat what we can barely tolerate at home.

It was a telling start to our long awaited holiday; we lurched from disappointment to bad luck. We lost
things, missed events, paid too much too eat in mediocre places and were ripped off in tourist traps. It
has never been like this before. We have had some amazing holidays over the years. But it just goes to
show, sometimes holidays can be a very expensive way to appreciate all the good things you already
have at home.
