The Effectiveness of Transgender Healthcare Training on Healthcare Students’ Knowledge, Attitudes and
Perceived Competency Providing Gender Affirming Healthcare (Defended May 5, 2023)
The purpose of this mixed-methods research study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a virtual transgender
health training in improving knowledge, attitudes, and perceived competency providing gender affirming
healthcare to the transgender community. I was awarded an American Psychological Foundation Division 17
Counseling Psychology research grant for this project.

Primary Care Psychologist/Behavioral Health Consultant (7/22-present)
Provide psychological services at a Federally Qualified Health Center integrated healthcare team serving
patients of all ages regardless of ability to pay. Consultation with primary care providers to assist with
behavioral health needs of patients. Provides short term brief diagnostic evaluations and psychotherapeutic
services. Primary patient population includes families of migrant farmworkers, immigrants, and refugees.

National Psychology Training Consortium APA Accredited Doctoral Internship; Lafayette, Indiana
Psychologist/Behavioral Consultant Intern- Integrated Healthcare Specialization (7/21-present)
Collaborate with primary care and psychiatric providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to

Under supervision by a licensed psychologist, conducted intake assessments and provided individual and group
psychotherapy to high school and university students while earning my master’s degree in counseling

Research Experience
Northern Arizona University Qualifying Research Project (9/18-1/19)
Completed Qualifying Research Project, a qualitative phenomenological study, which is similar to a master’s
thesis, entitled ‘Transgender People Managing Well; Resilience, Social Support, and Other Protective
Factors That Contribute to Good Mental Health and Well-Being of Transgender People’. Conducted research
interviews with transgender adults who reported that they are managing well as a transgender person and do
not have severe mental health concerns. Conducted data analysis using the software Quirkos.

SmartRevenue Ethnography Research Consultant (9/16-7/17)


Analyzed qualitative data from ethnographic research surveys using content analysis. Assisted with online
survey development for political ethnography and market research projects. Recruited study participants.

Vancouver Crisis Center (1/97 - 3/98)


Designed and conducted needs assessment research using grant funding from the Vancouver Crisis Center to
identify strategies for reducing repeat non-emergency calls that tie up the suicide prevention hotline.
Gathered data from stakeholders utilizing focus groups, surveys, and individual interviews to identify the
unmet needs of repeat crisis line callers. Analyzed qualitative and quantitative data using descriptive
statistics and content analysis. Results indicated that people who called the suicide hotlines for non-
emergency reasons often struggled with loneliness and lack of social support. Wrote a research report with
recommendations to develop peer support resources to serve the social support needs of crisis line callers.

Burnaby Peer Support Program Evaluation (12/97 – 4/98)

Designed and conducted program evaluation research of a peer mentor program for adults with a mental
illness. Developed individual interview survey instrument to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Trained
and supervised research assistant who assisted with conducting the interviews. Analyzed the data using
descriptive statistics and content analysis. Wrote a research report with recommendations for improvement.

Drawing from mixed-methods research, this symposium explored increasing protective factors that facilitate
health and well-being of LGBTQ people in healthcare, education, religious, and social settings.

Corey, D. & Wegwert, D. (2019). Supporting Health in the Transgender/Gender Nonconforming Population.
Co-presented with DeAnn Wegwert, RN. at the Let’s Get Better Together Conference, Phoenix, Arizona.
Based on our qualitative research project results and clinical experience, we discussed recommended
improvements in education of health professionals regarding transgender and gender nonconforming
identities, health needs and risks for the transgender/gender nonconforming population, and ways of
providing respectful, gender-affirming healthcare.

Corey, D. (2001). Effects of Labels on Attitudes Toward Adults with a Mental Illness.
Poster presented at the 83rd Annual Convention of the Western Psychological Association, Maui, Hawaii.
Supervised college students in the survey design, data collection, and analysis of a quasi-experimental
research project, which studied the effects of using a term hypothesized to be less stigmatic than the term
“mental illness” on community attitudes toward adults with a mental illness.

Social Action Experience


National Association of Social Workers; Political Action for Candidate Election
Political Field Organizer (8/20-11/20)
Recruited 32 social worker and college student volunteers to text out the vote to Arizonans. Created a text
bank program and obtained an Arizona registered voter list using Nation Builder and ZipWhip. Wrote all
scripts and replies for the text bank and trained volunteers on how to text out the vote. Managed and
supervised my volunteer team, who texted over 35,000 Arizonans to persuade them to vote for NASW
endorsed candidates and motivate them to commit to vote. Created and facilitated voter engagement
workshops, where I trained social workers, college students and high school students how to help register
people to vote in a COVID-19 environment. Participants in my workshops collectively helped nearly 200
Arizonans to register to vote using our QR code and website.

Organizing Corps
Organizing Corps Alumni (5/20-8/20)
Trained in a 5 Day Virtual Bootcamp through Organizing Corps 2020, led by veteran campaign staff that
recruits and trains field organizers. Participated in workshops on the fundamentals of organizing: voter
registration, volunteer recruitment, voter contact, digital tools, data analytics, and field strategy.

Engaged in conversations with voters to learn about the issues that were most important to them and to

I participate in weekly didactics for psychologists in training, which often focus on practicing psychology in
an integrated care setting. I have completed workshops on Primary Care Culture, Motivational Interviewing,
Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), Suicide Assessment and Intervention,
Teen Crisis Intervention, Rural Mental Health, Taking Integration to the Next Level/Contextual Interviewing
Substance Abuse Intervention, Tobacco Cessation Intervention, Screening for Cognitive Impairment in
Primary Care, and Gender Affirmative with Transgender Youth. Multicultural trainings included integrated
care with African American, Latino/a, and Jewish communities, taught with a cultural humility perspective.

Gottman Trained Couples Therapist- Level 1 (12/20) Level 2 (06/23)


Completed Level 2 of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy Training; the level required to competently
practice the Gottman Method. The techniques are based on 40 years of scientific research on what makes
relationships succeed or fail, into a practical “nuts-and-bolts” approach to improving couples’ relationships.

Suicide Bereavement Clinician Training Program (9/19)


Completed a one-day training with Dr. Jack Jordan for mental health clinicians on psychotherapy techniques
for clients in bereavement from a loved one dying by suicide.

Denver Summer Solution Focused Therapy 5 Day Intensive Training (7/19)


Completed an intensive clinical training program in Solution Focused Therapy facilitated by Teri Pichot,
LCSW. In addition to a review of Solution Focused Therapy skills, we were provided specialized training on
using Solution Focused Therapy with couples, court-mandated clients, and clients in crisis.

Northern Arizona Suicide Prevention Conference (6/19)


Completed a series of workshops for clinicians on suicide prevention in the Native American community.

Safe Zone Training (9/17)


Completed Safe Zone training on creating LGBTQ inclusive environments. Topics included gender,
