FAIRYTALE

THE ROYAL SWORD

Once upon a time in a small town called Astag, there lived a beautiful girl named Illis who lived

with her stepfather, mother and siblings. Illis was well loved by everybody in the village except

her stepfather who didn’t like her at all and never fancied anything she did. Illis tried all she

could to make her step father love her genuinely but his hatred grew with each passing day.

One day, Illis’ wicked father sent her to the stream to fetch water. She went for the first round

and came back, her step father used the water to water his almost dead garden. She went for the

second time again and he took the water and poured it on the ground. Illis was already tired but

her father asked for more water, so she went back for the third time all because she wanted to

please him. On her way to the stream she found a sword that looked like a royal sword.

“This must belong to the royal family” she thought to herself.

Illis not knowing what to do with the sword left it and went to fetch the water she had come for.

Coming back she met an old lady who was thirsty and needed water to drink. Looking at Illis the

old woman said to her, “I have walked this earth for so long but never have I seen a heart so pure

filled with compassion. You my daughter are blessed and your future is bright. That which you

have found keep it, for it will lead you to your destiny and take you to where you belong.” Illis

was rather surprised, “Say no more mother, your words have pierced my heart I feel like ive

known you all my life. These words which you have spoken are strange yet have so much

weight, drink this water and regain the strength which you have lost.” Illis brings down her pot

of water, cupping her hands together she helps the woman drink from it. Illis then puts back the
pot of water on her head and bends down to take the sword too. She turns to bid the old woman

farewell but she is nowhere to be found. Illis went home smiling.

Getting home, her father noticed she was in her spirits and was rather annoyed at how happy she

was. He knew that Illis was a cheerful child but this was different. Illis tries as much as possible

to hide the sword from her father but he sees it. Looking at her with disgust he says,

“Ugly child! I asked you for water but you come home to me with a sword?”

He rushes towards her and grabs the sword, in anger he pushed the pot from her head and it fell

to a thousand pieces on the floor. Illis turns around and begins to run as she cries all the way to

her room.

A few days later, it was announced that the royal was missing and a reward will be given to

anyone who can find it. Hearing this Illis decides to return the sword without her fathers

knowledge. Unknown to her father was five steps ahead of her already. He wanted to use the

sword for his own selfish interest. He felt he needed some kind of compensation for raising a

child that wasn’t his. He calls Illis out of her room and drags her by the arm all the way to

palace. They got to the palace and where allowed passage because after they told the palace

guards that they had in their possession the royal sword. It was as though the sword knew that it

was home, for it began to glow the moment Illis reached out and touched it. Everyone was

shocked, “The sword only glows in the hand of royalty, why then is it glowing in the hands of a

poor peasant girl?”
