1)1. Discuss an example of symbolism on page 40.

Answer- In page 40 panel 2, Marjane uses symbolism to illustrate that the ghosts of the dead are pushing the
Shah to his end.

2) What story did Marji’s neighbour make up about the spot on her cheek?

What did this reflect about the Iranian people?

Answer The neighbor claims that a bullet almost hit her head. This shows that the people of Iran take pride in
boasting their struggles during that time of distress.

3). Why does Ramin believe his father is not a murderer? How does his comment reflect the attitude of other
children?

Answer- Ramin strongly believes that his father is not a murderer, since he took the lives of communists. In the
eyes of Ramin, communities are deemed “evil” and killing them is not a crime

4. Look at the entire illustration in the second-to-last panel on p. 43. What does it seem to suggest despite what
Marji and her family are saying?

Answer This panel suggests that Marje’s parents think that they have been freed from the devil, little knowing that
the devil still lurks in the corner. The serpent around the panel symbolizes evil, since serpents are commonly
associated with the devil.

5). Within the chapter The Party ", the global theme of political instability is heavily explored.

Explain with reference to the visual narration used by Marjane Satrapi.

Answer Marje in the first page of the chapter makes it evident that the people of Iran demand the Shah to be
stripped of power. They burnt his pictures and took down his statues in the second and third panel of page 41. After
the Shah had been thrown out of authority the people rejoiced and had a party, implicating that Iran was a
politically unstable country.

6)1. What does the panel on page 42 signify?

Answer It symbolizes freedom as the people of Iran are rejoicing after the shah has been stripped of power. This
panel takes up the whole page, this weight might signify how important of a turning point it was to Iran’s history. It
might also take up the whole page for the reader to take more time to acknowledge how important this event truely
is.

7. What character inferences of Marjane can you draw in this chapter?

ANSWER- The idea of a “party” tends to be very child-like perhaps signifying that Marje is still pure and young.
She is also very curious about how her environment is constantly changing, and keeps questioning her teachers,
even going against them when they showed signs of supporting the shah. This might show a transition of her
character from being an innocent child, to someone who is slightly more mature.

1. Where had Siamak and Mohsen been for the last several years? Why?
Answer They both had been imprisoned under the power of the shah, for the apparent “crime” they had commited
that went against the shah’s regime.

2)1. Who led the training in torture practices?

Answer The C.I.A was responsible for leading the training in torture practises as stated my Moshen.

3)1. According to Marji, what makes a hero? Are there other people in Marji’s life you consider heroes? Why
or why not? If you answer yes, why do you think Marji overlooks these people?

Answer- To Marje anyone who endured a burden or sacrifice for justice or the betterment of the environment was a
hero. She considers the political prisons hero’s due to the pain they endured during the time of their imprisonment.
Marje regards them as heroes due to her child like idealism.

4)1. How does Marji’s mother’s perspective on justice and forgiveness change after Siamak and Mohsen return?
Why? How does this impact Marji’s understanding of justice and forgiveness?

Answer After Siamak and Mohsen return, they start to explain the brutality that prisons had to face in prison.
Marji’s mother is clear shaken due to the extent of graphic violence, She shows that she has been emotionally
impacted. Her mothers reaction makes her start to reflect on her own ideas about what justice and forgiveness truly
is.

5)1. How has war corrupted the innocence of children like Marji?

Ans War tends to destroy the innocence and pureness in children by various means. Children will be direct victims
to killing and death since death is a normalized aspect of war. It might change their emotional wellbeing. A lot of
children are put into the state of constant fear, caring about their dear own life. Overall war stips off the youthness
and playfulness of children giving them a more premature view of the world around them.

6) 1. What ethical dilemma does Marji face? What is your opinion of justice?

Marje faces several ethical dilemmas. The first one being revenge and justice or forgiveness. She is highly
uncertain whether the shah and his followers should be penalized for their actions or wether they should be
forgiven and choose to live a better life. Freedom to me is simply the right to say and do whatever one's heart
desires giving their action is within the ethical boundaries. Freedom is simply the flexibility to do what one desires
to or chooses to do. Freedom is when one is not bound to shackles or being pulled by strings and is living by their
own interests.

7)1. Explain the frame/panel on pg 51

Ans- It depicts the emotional burden put on Marje’s family and how it took a toll on their life as a whole. It also
signifies the change in Marge's innocence to understanding the world around her.

8)1. Explain the graphic weight on pg 52

Page 52 visually depicts the emotional experiences faced by the characters. Showing a picture of death adds on to
graphic weight. The idea of showing a dead person cut up might signify that life was almost disposable at that time
and had no value whatsoever.

9) The 2 panels at the bottom of page 47 use foreground. Explain the significance
Ans- It shows how 2 innocent individuals had been unfairly imprisoned. More of the color white had been used
signifying that they truly didn't commit anything wrong. The expression on their face is grim meaning that they
feel injustice and it also makes the reader sympathize for them.
