Asynchronous Individual Task
The movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” begins with Chris Gardner's risk-taking decision to
invest all his savings in a bone-density machine, which he struggles to sell. Despite his hard
work selling all of the bone-density machines, Chris is unable to meet his financial needs, which
leads to his wife leaving him. As it continued to be like that, he also lost his home, which
resulted in him and his son finding a shelter to sleep in while he continued to work hard for his
dream of being financially stable.
As he is finding a job, Chris rides a taxi cab with high-level executive from Dean Witter, the
brokerage firm where he is hoping to land an internship. During the ride, he shows his creativity
by solving the Rubik’s cube, even though he doesn’t have much experience solving it.
Fortunately, he solves it before they arrive at their destination. Because of the man who works as
a broker, he approaches stepping out of the luxury car in front of the brokerage firm. He
envisions himself pursuing a career in finance and securing a stable and better future for his
family. When he finally lands an internship at Dean Witter, another high-stakes risk because it is
an unpaid internship with no certainty that he will be an employee. But he takes the risk of no
immediate financial gain but significant long-term stability. Since Chris encountered financial
problems, he and his son were evicted from their apartment and have no place to stay. Despite
this problem, Chris shows being resilient and creative by creating an imagination to distract his
son, where he pretends that they are surrounded with dinosaurs and they need to hide in the cave,
which is the subway restroom. Furthermore, Chris shows his flexibility as he adjusts his
workflow, despite facing a lot of struggle both personally and professionally. Chris creatively
decides not to waste any time, like avoid hanging up the phone calls, avoid drinking water to not
waste any time in the bathroom, and manage his time tightly. Despite his personal struggles and
the fact that he is competing with other interns, Chris never shows any sense of entitlement.
Instead, he humbly accepts the circumstances, working hard and showing gratitude for the
opportunity to prove himself, knowing that it could lead to a better future.
Chris Gardner shows several characteristics that define his journey from hardship to
success. He sets an inspiring example of how one can overcome adversity through determination
and belief in oneself. Also, this highlight the importance why being creative entrepreneur will
help you succeed in the future.
