Lecture on
Multi-wave Imaging for the
Assessment of Civil Structures
Thursday, 29 February March 2024, at 05:00 PM (IST) Dr. Debdutta Ghosh
Senior Scientist, CSIR-CBRI
through Zoom
SYNOPSIS OF THE LECTURE:
Infrastructure stocks throughout the world are getting
deteriorated over the period of time. Climate change and
abrupt environmental effects accelerated the whole
degradation and weakening process. Besides conventional
concrete structures, heritage structures also contribute to
these threatened infrastructural stocks. Therefore, protecting
these deteriorated structures is essential to prevent any
sudden catastrophic failures, loss of life & properties and loss
of the country's rich cultural heritage. Before carrying out such
preservation /strengthening activities, evaluation of
weakened, deteriorated, vulnerable locations is essential
without damaging these aged structures. Individual Non-
Destructive Testings and Evaluation (NDT&E) techniques may
not be suitable for thorough understanding the complete status
of the different kinds of structures. Therefore, application of
multi-level of diagnostic using NDT&E techniques is essential
for assessment of different infrastructural stocks. This
presentation discusses the research carried out at CSIR-CBRI
on some of the modern NDT & E techniques such as multi-
wave-based imaging techniques based on electromagnetic and
mechanical waves with different frequencies. Few laboratory-
based experiments and field studies have been highlighted
here. The developed imaging algorithms for the imaging are
also briefly discussed. Future directions of research have also
been highlighted.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Born in April 1989, Dr. Debdutta Ghosh obtained his PhD
from IIT Delhi. His significant contribution is in Structural
Engineering, especially in developing new NDT&E
techniques, Heritage Structures, Structural Health
Monitoring (SHM), multi-hazard resistant building
systems etc. He receives several national-level awards,
such as the Promising Young Structural Engineer award
