Activity: "Trigonometry Basketball Challenge"

Materials Needed:

 A mini basketball or soft ball (or even a crumpled piece of paper).

 A wastebasket or box to act as the "basket".
 A blackboard or projector to display triangles with labeled sides
(opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse).

Steps:

1. Quick Introduction:
o Briefly explain sin⁡\sinsin, cos⁡\coscos, and tan⁡\tantan,
showing how they relate to the sides of a right triangle
(sin⁡=PH\sin = \frac{P}{H}sin=HP, cos⁡=BH\cos = \frac{B}
{H}cos=HB, tan⁡=PB\tan = \frac{P}{B}tan=BP).
o Make sure the students understand which side is which in
relation to the angle.
2. Set up the Challenge:
o Draw or project different right triangles on the board,
labeling the sides.
o On each turn, one team/player is given a triangle with the
lengths of two sides (e.g., the opposite and hypotenuse) and
must calculate the sin⁡\sinsin, cos⁡\coscos, or tan⁡\tantan of a
given angle.
3. Earn Shots:
o For each correct answer, the team/player earns a shot at the
"basket" (wastebasket).
o The number of shots depends on the difficulty of the problem
(easy problem = 1 shot, harder problem = 2 or 3 shots).
4. Shooting the Ball:
o After solving the problem, the player takes their shots from a
designated line.
o If they make the shot, their team earns extra points.
5. Scoring:
o Correct answers and successful shots contribute to the team’s
total score.
o The team with the highest combined score from both
problem-solving and basketball wins a small prize.
1. Height of a Tree

 Problem: You're standing 10 meters away

from the base of a tree. The angle of elevation
from where you're standing to the top of the
tree is 30°. Using tan θ, calculate the height
of the tree.
o Solution:
tan 30° = (Height of tree) / (Distance to
tree)
tan 30° = h / 10
h = 10 × tan 30° ≈ 5.77 meters

2. Ladder Against a Wall

 Problem: A ladder is leaning against a wall

such that it forms an angle of 60° with the
ground. If the length of the ladder is 8 meters,
calculate how high up the wall the ladder
reaches using sin θ.
o Solution:
sin 60° = (Height reached on the wall) /
(Length of the ladder)
sin 60° = h / 8
h = 8 × sin 60° ≈ 6.93 meters

3. Ramp for Accessibility

 Problem: A wheelchair ramp needs to have

an angle of elevation of 10° for safety
regulations. If the ramp needs to reach a
height of 2 meters, how long should the ramp
be, using sin θ?
o Solution:
sin 10° = (Height) / (Ramp length)
sin 10° = 2 / L
L = 2 / sin 10° ≈ 11.5 meters

4. Shadow of a Building

 Problem: A 12-meter tall building casts a

shadow that is 20 meters long. What is the
angle of elevation of the sun? Use tan θ.
o Solution:
tan θ = (Height of building) / (Length of
shadow)
tan θ = 12 / 20
θ = tan 30°

5. Flying a Kite

 Problem: You are flying a kite, and the string

makes a 45° angle with the ground. If you’ve
let out 30 meters of string, how high is the
kite above the ground? Use sin θ.
o Solution:
sin 45° = (Height of the kite) / (Length of
string)
sin 45° = h / 30
h = 30 × sin 45° ≈ 21.2 meters

6. Slope of a Roof

 Problem: A roof is inclined at an angle of 25°

to the horizontal. If the vertical height of the
roof is 5 meters, what is the length of the
sloping side (roof length)? Use sin θ.
o Solution:
sin 25° = 5 / L
L = 5 / sin 25° ≈ 11.83 meters

7. Cable to a Tower

 Problem: A 50-meter tall communication

tower has a support cable anchored 40 meters
from its base. What is the angle the cable
makes with the ground? Use tan θ.
o Solution:
tan θ = 50 / 40
θ = tan 51°

8. Height of a Flagpole

 Problem: You stand 30 meters from a flagpole

and measure the angle of elevation to the top
as 40°. Calculate the height of the flagpole
using tan θ.
o Solution:
tan 40° = h / 30
h = 30 × tan 40° ≈ 25.2 meters

9. Distance to an Object

 Problem: A lifeguard at the beach spots a

boat at an angle of depression of 15° from a
10-meter high tower. How far is the boat from
the base of the tower? Use tan θ.
o Solution:
tan 15° = 10 / d
d = 10 / tan 15° ≈ 37.3 meters
10. Ramp Length

 Problem: A skateboard ramp is 1.5 meters

high and inclined at 20°. How long is the
ramp? Use sin θ.
o Solution:
sin 20° = 1.5 / L
L = 1.5 / sin 20° ≈ 4.4 meters

11. Distance to a Mountain

 Problem: From a point on level ground, the

angle of elevation to the top of a mountain is
22°. If the mountain is 800 meters high, how
far is the observer from the base of the
mountain? Use tan θ.
o Solution:
tan 22° = 800 / d
d = 800 / tan 22° ≈ 1,993 meters

12. Climbing a Hill

 Problem: You're hiking up a hill with a slope

of 35°. If you hike 500 meters along the slope,
how much elevation have you gained? Use sin

o Solution:
sin 35° = h / 500
h = 500 × sin 35° ≈ 286.8 meters

13. Distance Between Two Buildings

 Problem: Two buildings are 50 meters apart.
From the top of the first building, the angle of
depression to the top of the second building is
10°. How much shorter is the second building
than the first? Use tan θ.
o Solution:
tan 10° = h / 50
