INTRODUCTION
Natural Resources: - Natural resources are raw materials found on
and below the Earth’s surface. They are naturally occurring
materials formed without any human intervention. Here are some
key points about natural resources:
1. Examples of Natural Resources –
o Earth’s most common Natural
Resources:
 Sunlight
 Air
 Water
 Soil
 Stone
 Plants
 Animals
 Fossil Fuels (Such as coal, petroleum
and natural gas.)
o These Resources are essential for
fulfilling necessities like food, building,
and clothing. They also produce
electricity, serve as fuel for
transportation, and are used in fertilizers.
o Note that items like plastic goods, metal
bodies, fabric and concrete are not
natural resources from themselves but
are obtained from them.
2. Types of Natural Resources:
o Renewable Resources –
 These resources are renewed during
our lifetime and are available to us in
abundance.
 Examples include sunlight, air, water,
plants and animals.
 There are two types of renewable
resources:
 Perpetually renewable resources
(Constantly replenished by
natural resources. E.g. Solar
energy).
 Intermediate renewable
resources (Last only if used
judiciously e.g., freshwater, soil
and trees).

3. Based on their source: -

o Biotic Resources –
 Deprived from living things from the
biosphere.
 Includes plants, animals and fossil
fuels.
o Abiotic Resources –
 Obtained from non-living and
inorganic substances.
 Includes sunlight, air, water and
minerals (for e.g., gold, silver, copper
and aluminum).
Remember that natural resources play a crucial role in
sustaining life and supporting human activities. It’s
essential to manage and use them wisely to ensure a
sustainable future.
Natural Resource Management

“Natural Resource Management refers to the

management of natural resources such as land,
plants. animals, water and soil with the sole focus
on how management affects the quality of life for
both present and future generations.”
What is Management of Natural Resources?
Natural resource management refers to the
management of resources such as animals, plants,
soil, land to improve the quality of life. It focuses on
how they could possibly be managed for our today
and tomorrow.
It deals with the way in which people interact with
natural landscapes.
Specifically, it aims at understanding the scientific
and technical aspects of resources and ecology.
Environmental management is closely related to
natural resource management.
An example of resource management is the lumber
tree forest. These forests are less diverse because of
the harvesting of lumber trees for a longer time. Such
a forest is the result of the management of the
resource by timber companies and can sustain life
because the locations for harvest are rotated and the
rate of tree cutting is controlled. The forest becomes
a sustainable source of lumber for a long time period
due to such practices.
Need to Manage Natural Resources
There is a need to manage our resources today, not
just for us, but our future generations too. Natural
resources are limited, there is a crisis for these
resources, hence needs to be managed. For example,
water: Usage of water and availability of water
always needs to be balanced, with a growing
population, there is an exponential increase in the
consumption of water while the availability of fresh
water is decreasing by the day.
Natural resources are depleting every day not only
because it is being used up by people, but also
because it is being polluted and destroyed due to
various human activities such as deforestation,
modernization, global warming to name a few.
There is an absolute need to manage resources for the
existence of living beings on earth and their survival.
Objectives of Natural Resources
The objectives of natural resource management are as
follows:
 To maintain ecological diversity.
 To provide resources for future generations.
 To maintain employment facilities for people.
Approaches of Natural Resources
Now that we know how important natural resources
are, what steps are we taking in the direction of
saving ourselves from the crisis of natural resources?
Are there any measures being taken at all? Let’s find
out in the upcoming segment.
Natural resources need to be used in a sustainable
manner for the welfare of mankind. They are so
complex in nature that coming up with fresh frames
as solutions seem to be the only way out.
 Various rules and regulations have been passed
by the Government over the years to ensure that
our wildlife does not become extinct and are not
hunted down. The government has also passed
rules and laws to limit large scale industries from
the use of excess water and rules for proper
sewage to ensure water bodies around industrial
areas are not getting contaminated. Care has also
been taken by the government with regard to air
pollutants being released by industries in the air
causing harmful diseases
 Water is being treated regularly to provide
drinkable water to the people
 The government has adopted measures and
encouraged people to recycle and reuse products
as much as possible.
 Use of plastic has also been banned which
reduces damage caused to nature to quite a large
extent
 Clean India Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
was launched by PM Narendra Modi. It was
initiated with the aim of having cleaner streets,
society, environment, contributing to the national
and hence global welfare.
Management of natural resources focusses on
preventing over-exploitation of resources. For eg.,
with the advancement of agriculture practices, and
farming have shifted from manual labour to the use
of machines. The increasing use of pesticides has
become damaging to the environment. All this has
increased the need for natural resource management
wisely.

Aspects of Natural Resource Management

1.Land Use Planning: This involves making
informed decisions about how to use land for
different purposes, such as agriculture, forestry,
or urban development.
2.Biodiversity Conservation: NRM aims to
protect and sustainably manage the diversity of
plant and animal species in ecosystems.
Conservation efforts help maintain ecological
balance and prevent species extinction.
3.Water Management: Effective water
management ensures equitable distribution,
quality, and sustainable use of water resources. It
includes strategies for irrigation, water storage,
and pollution control.
4.Sustainability of Industries: NRM considers the
long-term viability of industries like agriculture,
mining, tourism, fisheries, and forestry.
Balancing economic activities with
environmental conservation is crucial.
5.Stewardship: NRM emphasizes the
responsibility of people as stewards of the
land. Our actions impact the health and
productivity of landscapes, affecting both present
and future generations.
In summary, Natural Resource Management seeks to
harmonize human needs with ecological well-being,
ensuring that natural resources are used wisely and
sustainably.
The 5 R’s to Save the Resources
1.Refuse: This means to say no to the things people
offer you that you don’t need. Refuse to buy
products that can harm you and the environment,
say No to single – use plastic carry bags.
2.Reduce: This means that you use less. You save
electricity by switching off unnecessary lights
and fans. You save water by repairing leaky taps.
Do not waste food.
3.Reuse: This is actually even better than recycling
because the process of recycling uses some
energy. In the ‘reuse’ strategy, you simply use
things again and again. Instead of throwing away
used envelops, you can reserve it and use it
again. The plastic bottles in which you buy
various food items like jam or pickle can be used
for strong things in the kitchen.
4.Repurpose: This means can a product can no
more be used for the original purpose, think
carefully and use it for some other useful
purpose. For example, cracked crockery or cups
with broken handles can be used to grow small
plants and as feeding vessels for birds.
5.Recycle: This means that you collect plastic,
paper, glass and metal items and recycle these
materials to make required things instead of
synthesizing or extracting fresh plastic, paper,
glass or metal. In order to recycle, we need to
segregate our wastes so that the material that can
be recycled is not dumped along with other
wastes.
