1a. Calculate the specific weight w, the density ρ and the specific gravity for oil of which 10
m3 weighs 78.33 KN. Assume g, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2, and the specific
weight of water is 9.79 KN/m3.
1b. A liquid has a mass density of 1550 kg/m3. Calculate its specific weight, specific gravity,
and specific volume.
2a. A plate (2m x 2m), 0.25 mm distant apart from a fixed plate, moves at 40 cm/s and requires
a force of 1 N. Determine the dynamic viscosity of the fluid in between the plates.
2b. At a certain point in an oil the shear stress is 0.2 N/m2 and the velocity gradient is 0.21 s-
1. If the mass density of the oil is 950 kg/m3 find the kinematic viscosity.
3a. Determine the absolute pressure of oil at the point in its storage vessel when gauge
pressure reads 80 KPa.
3b. Convert a pressure head of 10 m of water column to kerosene of specific gravity 0.8 and
carbon-tetra-chloride of specific gravity of 1.62.
3c. Determine (a) the gauge pressure and (b) The absolute pressure of water at a depth of 9
m from the surface.
3d. A U-tube manometer (illustrated below) measures the pressure difference between two
points A and B in a liquid of density ρ1. The U-tube contains mercury of density ρ2. Given
that a = 1.5 m, b = 0.75 m and h = 0.5 m, solve for the difference of pressure in pipes A and B
if they both contain water, and given that the specific gravity of mercury is 13.6.
4a. An Isosceles triangular plate of base 5 m and altitude 5 m is immersed vertically in an oil
of specific gravity 0.8. If the centre of gravity of the triangle is 2.67 m below the free water
surface, determine the total pressure and the centre of pressure. Take specific weight of water
as 9.79 KN/m3.
4b. A wooden block of width 2.5 m and length 6 m is floating horizontally in water. If the
wooden block is 0.97 m deep into the water, find (i) the volume of water displaced, (ii) position
of centre of buoyancy and (iii) weight of the block. Take specific weight of water as 9.79
KN/m3.
