What is manufacturing process

Manufacturing/ Production process is:

General system of industrial method through

which the raw materials are converted into
finished product.

What are the importance and advantages
of machining

Importance
It is important in industry to produce
components with tight tolerance and high
accuracies and with high surface quality.

Advantages
Removing undesired materials from casting,
obtaining tight tolerance for assembly, quick
process, repeatability
What are the disadvantages of machining

• Lose a lot of materials,

• Need skillful person, and
• Need large investment

Main machining processes
 The three principal machining processes are
turning, drilling, and milling. The ‘‘other
machining operations’’ include shaping, planning,
broaching, and sawing.
Main machining processes
 The cutting process is achieved in most machining
operations by means of a primary motion, and
secondary motion
 Primary motion: is the main cutting motion responsible
of metal cutting measured by the cutting speed

 Secondary motion: is the motion responsible of

expanding the cutting motion to whole required surface
measured by the cutting feed

 Adjustment motion: is the motion responsible of the

interference between tool and wp measured by the depth
of cut

Main elements of metal cutting
Metal cutting process is:

An industrial process, through which the excess

metals are removed in form of chip to get the
final shape. And main elements are:

Surfaces produced be cutting tool
1. Work Surface
Original surface to be machined on
W.P.
2. Transient surface
Surface generated on the work directly
by the geometry of cutting edge.
3. Machined surface
Final required surface after chip is
removed.
