Abstract
This integration note provides guidance for installing or upgrading to Microsoft® Windows® Server 2012 R2 on HP ProLiant
servers. This paper also identifies the servers and options that we recommend when implementing Windows Server 2012
R2.
This integration note applies to the following Windows operating systems:
• Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter - provides unlimited virtual instances, making it ideal for highly virtualized private
and hybrid cloud environments.
• Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard - provides two virtual instances, making it ideal for low density or non-virtualized
environments.
• Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials - ideal for up to 25 users and up to 50 devices, and includes single virtual instance,
well suited for midsize businesses growing into their virtualized private and hybrid cloud environments. The Essentials
edition can also be enabled as a role in Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and Standard Editions.
• Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation - ideal for up to 15 users in an environment not requiring virtualization.
The differences in virtualization capability and the number of users make each edition appropriate for a different
environment. This paper addresses the following key topics:
• Recommended system configurations
• Recommended ProLiant servers
• Recommended ProLiant server platform options, including:
– Software and drivers
– Storage options
– Network interface controllers (NICs)
– Converged network adapters (CNAs)
• Procedures for a new installation or upgrading
• Known issues and workarounds
• Links to references and contact information
Note
Storage functions dependent on Storage Spaces technology are not currently available on HP ProLiant Smart Array
controllers.
For detailed information or to download Windows Server 2012 R2, see the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 home page
at microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/windows-server/windows-server-2012-r2.aspx.

Component Requirement(s)
Peripherals • Keyboard
• Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device
Note
Available storage space is the free disk space on the partition that will contain the system files. Additional space is required
to copy the Windows Server 2012 R2 DVD contents to the disk during installation. Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM
require more disk space for paging and for creating memory dump files in case of system crash.

3. After the upgrade completes, install the Windows Server 2012 R2 Supplement for Service Pack for ProLiant to make
sure that you have Windows 2012 R2 supported drivers.
Caution
If you are upgrading a server having a Dynamic Smart Array B120i or Dynamic Smart Array B320i controller from Microsoft
Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2, see the “Special instructions for servers with a Dynamic Smart Array
B120i or HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i controller” section of this paper. Failure to follow these instructions may cause a
“system crash with bugcheck” resulting in loss of data.
Special instructions for servers with a Dynamic Smart Array B120i or HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i controller
Before upgrading a Windows Server 2012 server that boots from either a Dynamic Smart Array B120i or HP Dynamic Smart
Array B320i controller, you must downgrade the dynamic smart array controller driver, hpsa2.sys, to the Windows 2008
64-bit version of the driver. Failure to downgrade the dynamic smart array controller driver before upgrading the operating
system to Windows Server 2012 R2 could result in data loss. (a system crash with bugcheck).
Use either of the following procedures to downgrade the Dynamic Smart Array Controller driver:
1. Download the HP ProLiant Dynamic Smart Array RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2008 x64 Editions from the HP
Support Center, using either of the following procedures:
– The direct link to the driver on the Support Center is

10. Restart the server to load the new driver. After the server restarts, upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 by completing
the steps in the “Upgrade procedures” section.
Note
After the upgrade completes, as noted in the upgrade procedures, install the Windows Server 2012 R2 Supplement for
Service Pack for ProLiant to make sure that you have Windows 2012 R2 supported drivers. Note that the version of the
dynamic smart array controller driver, hpsa2.sys, that is included in the supplement is the same HP ProLiant Dynamic
Smart Array RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2008 x64 Editions that is used for Windows Server 2008. An updated
version of the driver will be available with the HP SPP release in early 2014.
Upgrade procedures
To upgrade from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2, the following steps:
1. Upgrade to SPP 2013.09.0 B before upgrading the OS to Windows 2012 R2. To upgrade firmware, use HP SUM in
Offline mode.
2. Insert the Windows Server 2012 R2 DVD into the optical drive, start the online upgrade by running setup.exe, and
then follow the steps on the installation screens to complete the OS upgrade.
3. After the upgrade completes, install the Windows Server 2012 R2 Supplement for Service Pack for ProLiant to make
sure that you have Windows 2012 R2 supported drivers.
To install Storage and Network device drivers during Windows Server 2012 R2 installation, use the following steps:
1. Extract the respective NIC or storage driver component and save it either to a USB drive or to the virtual folder in the
iLO Integrated Remote Console.
2. Boot Windows 2012 R2 using DVD or iLO virtual media.
3. After loading the OS files, insert the USB key to the server.
4. At disk selection window, select Load Driver, and then select the driver.inf from USB key.

Note
Although some Windows Server 2012 R2 Supplement for Service Pack for ProLiant components may not denote support for
Windows Server 2012 R2, all components included in this supplement are applicable for Windows Server 2012 R2. Installing
the supplement will remove any caution flags (yellow bangs) that may be present in the Device Manager.
TIP
Create a folder, and then extract the supplement build to that folder. If you execute the file without saving it to your server,
the file names will display randomly on your monitor.

6. After selecting the bundle for all hosts being updated, open the Select Items to be Installed screen to complete the
following tasks:
A. Select the components for installation.
B. If necessary, configure the components. The Configure Now link is not available when running
Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Server Core option. To configure components:

recommended Windows OS.
ii. Configure the components and resolve any failed dependencies before deploying the OS.
C. Review the revision history of the components.
7. After selecting the components, click Install. When the installation finishes, the Installation Results screen appears.
When using HP SUM to install the updates, it installs the storage and NIC drivers only. To install firmware updates:
1. Click reanalyze the components.
2. When HP SUM runs again, the firmware components will display. Select the appropriate firmware components to
update, and then click Install to complete the process.
If one or more components did not install successfully, complete the following steps:
1. Exit HP SUM.
2. Make the required update to the environment.
3. Restart the Supplement installation.
If installed in your ProLiant server, the components listed below should be installed manually:
