Newton’s law for a system of particles
Newton’s Law for a System of Particles
Newton’s Law for a System of Particles
Example 173: Three charged particles in a vacuum are shown in Fig. below.
Particle 1 has a mass of 10-5 kg and a charge of 4 × 10-3 C (coulombs) and is at the
origin at the instant of interest. Particles 2 and 3 each have a mass of 2 × 10-5 kg
and a charge of 5 × 10-5 C and are located, respectively, at the instant of interest 1
m along the y axis and 3 m along the z axis. An electric field E given as
𝐸 = 2𝑥 𝑖Ƹ + 3𝑧𝑗Ƹ + 3 𝑦 + 𝑧 2 𝑘෠ N/C (a)
is imposed from the outside. Compute: (a) the position of the center of mass for
the system. (h) the acceleration of the center of mass, and (c) the acceleration of
particle 1.

Example 174: The two 2-kg balls are initially at rest on the horizontal surface
when a vertical force F = 60 N is applied to the junction of the attached wires as
shown. Compute the vertical component ay of the initial acceleration of each ball
by considering the system as a whole.

Example 175: The two spheres, each of mass m, are connected by the spring and
hinged bars of negligible mass. The spheres are free to slide in the smooth guides
up the incline θ. Determine the acceleration aC of the center C of the spring.

Example 176: A 200-kg space vehicle is observed at t = 0 to pass through the
origin of a Newtonian reference frame Oxyz with velocity v0 = (150 m/s)i relative
to the frame. Following the detonation of explosive charges, the vehicle separates
into three parts A, B, and C, of mass 100 kg, 60 kg, and 40 kg, respectively.
Knowing that at t = 2.5 s the positions of parts A and B are observed to be A(555, -
180, 240) and B(255, 0, - 120), where the coordinates are expressed in meters,
determine the position of part C at that time.

Example 177: The man of mass m1 and the woman of mass m2 are standing on
opposite ends of the platform of mass m0 which moves with negligible friction and
is initially at rest with s = 0. The man and woman begin to approach each other.
Derive an expression for the displacement s of the platform when the two meet in
terms of the displacement x1 of the man relative to the platform.
