GCE A’ LEVEL

GEOGRAPHY

PAPER 1

JUNE 2011
Section A – Practical’s

2. You are required to do a field investigation of soils along a slope.

a. Briefly describe how you would plan for the field investigation.
(4)
b. Choose any three soil characteristics you would measure in the
field and explain how you would ensure them. (12)
c. With the aid of diagrams, outline three techniques that can be
used to plot the results of your field investigation. (9)

Section B- Physical Core

3a). Describe adiabatic temperature changes that occur in the earth’s

atmosphere. (6)

b)i. Briefly explain how air masses are modified as they migrate from
their source regions.

ii. With reference to examples, show how modification of air masses

can influence weather patterns. (12)

c. Assess the role of human activities in global climate change. (7)

4a). Outline the main features of raindrop formation. (6)

b). With the aid of labeled diagrams, discuss conditions and process
leading to the development of

i. convectional rainfall
ii. frontal rainfall (12)

c). With reference to examples, evaluate the effectiveness of measures put

in place to deal with problems associated with tropical cyclones. (7)

5a). Explain the main factors that determine the river’s ability to erode its
channel. (6)
b). Describe and explain the factors that influence river valley cross
profiles. (12)

c). To what extent can the frequency and scale of river floods be
influenced by human actions? (7)

6a). Briefly describe the origin of the main types of joints in igneous
rocks. (6)

b). With reference to example, show how rock joints can influence
weathering types and landform development in areas of crystalline
rocks. (12)

c). Discuss two other physical factors other than joints which can influence
landform development. (7)

7a). Distinguish between debris and repose slopes. (6)

b). Photograph A (Insert 1) shows a slope form.

i. Draw a labeled diagram to show the main features of the slope.

ii. Write an explanatory account of the process that may have led to
the development of the features you have identified in (b) (i)
above. How is this slope likely to change over time? (12)

c). Assess the extent to which human activities can modify debris transfer
on slopes. (7)
8a). Define the terms carrying capacity and biodiversity. (6)

b). Fig 1 shows factors affecting the savanna ecosystem.

BIOTIC FACTORS NATURAL FIRE

Show how the factors shown in Fig 1 have influenced the growth of
savanna vegetation. (12)

c). To what extent have human activities modified the savanna vegetation?
(7)

Section C – Physical Options

9a). Describe the main features of ocean basins. (9)

b). Show how the modern theory of plate tectonics can be used to
explain the global distribution of the major tectonic landforms. (16)

10a). Outline the nature of hazards associated with volcanoes. (9)

b). With reference to examples, assess the extent to which a community’s

vulnerability to volcanic hazards is dependant on human factors. (16)
11a). Describe and explain the nature of running water in present- day
deserts. (9)

b). Assess the significance of running water in the development of desert

landforms. (16)

12a). Briefly outline conditions favouring the growth of different types of

coral reefs. (9)

b). Using examples, assess the extent to which human activities can be
viewed as a threat to coral reefs.

13a). With the aid of diagrams, describe the main glacial transportation
processes. (9)

b). Outline the main problems associated with the utilization of peri- glacial
areas. How many such problems be managed? (16)
