KIG 1009: Statics

Lecture 3b Statics of Particles 3D

Problem solving tips:
Addition of forces in space
1. When a force is defined by its magnitude and direction, find
its rectangular components Fx, Fy and Fz

Scenario 1
If direction of force is defined by angle θ y and ϕ, first project F onto
horizontal plane to get Fh, then resolve into Fx and Fz

Scenario 2
If direction of force is defined by angle θ x θ y and θ z, get each
component through cosine of the angle

Scenario 3
If direction of force is defined by two points (M and N)
Step 1: Define direction vector of MN in terms of components and unit
vector
MN = dx i + d y j + d z k

Step 2: Define unit vector λ along line of action of F

= (d xi + dy j + d k )
MN 1
λ=
MN d
z

Step 3: Multiply λ by magnitude of F

F=Fλ=
F
(dxi +dy j + dz k)
d
2. When a force is defined by its rectangular components Fx, Fy
and Fz
Obtain magnitude F from

F=

Obtain direction cosines from

F Fy Fz
cos x = x cos y = cos z =
F F F

3. To determine resultant R of 2 or more forces

Add rectangular components to get Rx, Ry and Rz

Obtain magnitude and direction of R

R=
Rx Ry Rz
cosx = cosy = cosz =
R R R
Class tutorial:
Forces and equilibrium in space
1. Draw free body diagram

2. Resolve into rectangular components using methods in the

earlier section

F=Fλ=
F
(dxi +dy j + d k)
d z

3. Set the resultant of each component to zero

(Tips: group the terms with the same unit vector)
This should yield 3 scalar equations with no more than 3
unknowns
