Biographies: G D Naidu (1893-1974)

 Was an Indian engineer and inventor


 Known as the Edison of India (for the significant contributions to the field
of technology, industry and development)
 Build the first electric motor in India.
 He left his village in search of technology and modern achievements.
 Defining moment of Naidu’s life:
Once a foreigner had ridden through the village of Kalangal on a
motorcycle. The sight of the motorcycle (roar of its engine & churning
dust) inspired him. He feels to ride and more importantly he wanted to
understand how it operated.
 For studying more about that and to achieve his passion he left his village.
 He travelled to Coimbatore
 Train service began in Coimbatore-1835
 First thing did in Coimbatore was to get a job
 Worked as a waiter at a hotel
 Saved money to achieve his dreams
 He travelled in trains and found that trains are faster.
 During his time as a waiter; he found the whereabouts of the foreigner who
had passed through his village in motorcycle. The man was a British
surveyor.
 Naidu saved Rs.400, tracked down the surveyor and placed all his money
at his feet and explained his passion for technology, Naidu’s words touched
the British surveyor and he gave him his motorcycle.
 Naidu try to identify each pats of the motorcycle , he began taking the bike
parts apart piece by piece and refitting it. He started understanding about
the working of brakes and engine.
 This made him to procure a job as a mechanic
 Gradually he started to invent.
 In 1920 Naidu set up his own transport business
 Also he dappled in cotton business the income he earned from this used to
help himself.
 Over time his transport business expanded and UMS (universal motor
service)becomes the most efficient fleet of transport vehicles in the
country.
 His passion for technology extended to cameras and films—in 1935 he
filmed the funeral of king George in London.
 He met Adolf Hitler and secure manufacturing contacts that helps to
develop and manufacturer razors.
 He returns to India and tried his hands at politics – he lost the 1936
provincial general election.
 He was gifted a Rolls-Royce car, making him one of the very few and
elite Indians who possessed such a statement of wealth.
 In mid-forties, He collaborated with D Balasundaram to create India’s
first indigenous motor--A company with UMS group, called National
Electric works made the motor in 1937.
 Naidu also invent---a electric razor, manufactured in Germany, a
tamper proof note-recoding machine and a kerosene run fast.
 His interest also moved to cameras – he created distance adjuster for film
cameras.
 His time in cotton business extended his interest in agriculture—he started
researching and identifying new forms and varieties of cotton, maize
and papaya----C V RAMAN, the Nobel prize winning Indian physicist
and Mokshagundam Visvesvaraiah, the Diwan of Mysore between 1912
&1918 visited Naidu’s Farm
 1944 – retired from automobile company
 Set up charitable & philanthropic foundations
 Set up first polytechnic in India—Hope College @ Coimbatore –the
college grew and expanded and renamed into Govt. College of
Technology.
 1945 he becomes the principal of this college and implemented his own
ideas to course curriculum & syllabuses ----but his proposals were
rejected by the British government ---so he resigned from his position.
 1974- passed away
 Words of C V RAMAN at Naidu’s Funeral “A great educator, an
entrepreneur in many fields of engineering and industry, a warm-
hearted man filled with love for his fellows and a desire to help them
in their troubles, Mr Naidu is truly a man in a million — perhaps this
is an understatement!”

PS: Naidu was a mischievous kid at school-a trouble maker-dislike


attending lessons-get punishment for his habit of hurling sand at
teachers during class but later he understood the importance of
education and therefore he started the HOPE college.
