General Instructions :
(1) There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section
E.All the sections are compulsory.
(3) Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two marks
each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D contains three long questions
of five marks each and Section E contains two case study based questions of 4 marks each.

(4) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D and E.
You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(5) Use of calculators is not allowed.
SECTION-A

24. In a two slit experiment with monochromatic light, fringes are obtained on a screen placed at

30. The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is –13.6 eV.
(i) What is the potential energy of an electron in the 3rd excited state?
(ii) If the electron jumps to the ground state from the 3rd excited state, calculated the
wavelength of the photon emitted. [3]

31. (i) Apply Gauss' law to derive the expression for electric field intensity due to an infinitely long
straight uniformly charged wire. What is the direction of the field intensity if it is positively
charged ?

In the above diagram, a particle of mass “m” and charge (- q) initially moving along X-axis with
velocity “vx” enters the region between two charged plates. The length of the plate system is “L”

32. (i) Two cells of emfs E1 and E2 are connected in series. Their internal resistances are r1 and r2
respectively. Compute the equivalent emf and equivalent internal resistance.
(ii) A battery of emf 10 V and internal resistance 3 is connected to a resistor. If the current in
the circuit is 0.5A,what is the resistance of the resistor? What is the terminal voltage of the
battery when the circuit is closed? [5]

(i) Explain the term 'drift velocity' of electrons in a conductor. Hence obtain the expression for the
current through a conductor in terms of 'drift velocity'.
(ii) The number density of free electrons in a copper conductor estimated is 8.5 × 1028 m–3. How
long does an electron take to drift from one end of a wire 3.0 m long to its other end? The area
of cross-section of the wire is 2.0 × 10–6 m2 and it is carrying a current of 3.0 A. [5]
33. (i) Draw a labelled ray diagram of a refractive telescope. Deduce an expression of magnifying
power of it. Write two main limitations of a refracting type telescope over a reflecting type
telescope.

(ii) Light from a point source in air falls on a convex spherical glass surface of refractive index
1.5 and radius of curvature 20 cm. The distance of light source from the glass surface is
100 cm. At what position is the image formed ? [5]

(i) Explain laws of refraction of light on the basis of Huygens wave theory.
(ii) What should be the width of each slit in order to obtain 10 maxima of the double slit
pattern within the central maximum of the single slit pattern ?

35. Case Study: Doping in Semiconductor
p-n junction is a single crystal of Ge or Si doped in such a manner that one half portion of it acts
as p-type semiconductor and other half functions as n-type semiconductor. As soon as a
p-n junction is formed, the holes from the p-region diffuse into the n-region and electron from
n-region diffuse into p-region. This results in the development of VB across the junction which
opposes the further diffusion of electrons and holes through the junction.
(i) What is meant by biasing? Mention its types. [1]
(ii) What are the charge carriers in a pure semiconductor. [1]
(iii) A diode is called as a unidirectional device. [2]
