Midterm Assignment - Yeshna Jhankur
Recently, with the advancement in child development and pedagogy, the concept of child
student-centered learning has become very popular in different educational settings from
preschools to primary and secondary schools. Student-centered learning as the name suggests
is focused on the students’ interests and allows them to have a more active role in their own
learning with the teacher serving as a facilitator. One of the main advantages of this strategy
is that it fosters independence in the students and builds their communication skills as they
work in collaboration with the instructor. This enables all students to have the chance to
become an integral part of classroom management. One setback of this strategy is that with
the student given the freedom to choose their topics, they may miss some key material as
there is less focus on lectures. Moreover, students who are introverted in nature and those
who prefer to learn alone may have trouble with collaborative learning.
Based on the recent research in pedagogy and in consideration of the advantages and
disadvantages of both classroom management strategies, I think that the student-centered
classroom strategy is more in favor of the student’s best interests for their learning journey as
it enables them to explore their interests, be an active participant in their learning and develop
essential skills such as communication and critical thinking.
