Section B
21. Give reasons for the following observation: [2]
The smell of hot sizzling food reaches you several metres away, but to get the smell from cold food you have to
go close.
OR
Why it is that to smell cold food, we have to go close but smell of hot food reaches us several meters away?
22. What are ionic and molecular compounds? Give examples. [2]
23. Why is the epidermis present as a thick waxy coating of cutin in desert plants? [2]
24. How do substances like CO2 and water move in and out of the cell? Discuss. [2]
25. Which wave property determines [2]

26. A car acquires a velocity of 72 kmh-1 in 10 second after starting from rest. Find (a) the acceleration (b) the [2]
average velocity and (c) the distance travelled in this time.
Section C
27. Differentiate between a saturated and unsaturated solution. How will you test whether a given solution is [3]
saturated or not?
28. A ball thrown up vertically returns to the thrower after 6s.Find [3]
a. the velocity with which it was thrown up.
b. the maximum height it reaches and

30. Describe the functions of epithelium tissue. [3]
31. Akhtar, Kiran and Rahul were riding in a motor car that was moving with a high velocity on an express way [3]
when an insect hit the windshield and got stuck on the windscreen. Akhtar and Kiran started pondering over the
situation. Kiran suggested that the insect suffered a greater change in momentum as compared to the change in
momentum of the motor car (because the change in the velocity of the insect was much more than that of the
motor car). Akhtar said that since the motor car was moving with a larger velocity, it exerted a larger force on
the insect and as a result ,the insect died. Rahul while putting an entirely new explanation said that both the
motor car and the insect experienced the same force and a change in their momentum. Comment on these
suggestions.
32. Four cars A, B, C and D are moving on a leveled road. Their distance versus time graphs are shown in figure. [3]
Which car is the slowest.

36. Write the main functions of atleast ten cell components. [5]
Section E
37. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
Work is done whenever a force moves something over a distance. You can calculate the energy transferred, or
work done, by multiplying the force by the distance moved in the direction of the force. Energy transferred =
work done = force × distance moved in the direction of the force.

Four men lift a 250 kg box to a height of 1 m and hold it without raising or lowering it.
i. Define work done. (1)
ii. How much work is done by the men in lifting the box? (1)
iii. How much work do they do in just holding it? (2)
OR
Why do they get tired while holding it? (g = 10 ms-2) (2)
38. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
The phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapours at any temperature below its boiling point is called
evaporation. In the case of liquids, a small fraction of particles at the surface, having higher kinetic energy, is
able to break away from the forces of attraction of other particles and gets converted into vapour. If the amount
of water in the air is already high, the rate of evaporation decreases. In an open vessel, the liquid keeps on
evaporating. The particles of liquid absorb energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during
evaporation. After a hot sunny day, people sprinkle water on the roof or open ground because the large latent
heat of vaporisation of water helps to cool the hot surface. And we prefer cotton clothes.

i. What is evaporation? (1)

ii. Why clothes dry faster on a windy day? (1)
iii. why do we prefer cotton clothes during hot sunny day? (2)
OR
What happens when acetone is poured on palm? (2)
39. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
Cropping pattern refers to the proportion of land under cultivation of different crops at different points of time.
Intercropping is the practice of growing more than one crop on the same field at the same time in a definite row
pattern. It is much superior to mixed cropping. Intercropping can incorporate crop rotation. The technique makes
the farmers busy throughout the year. Productivity is increased. Soil erosion is prevented. Pests and weeds
remain under control.

i. What is Inter-cropping? (1)

ii. Why intercropping is superior to all other means of cropping? (1)
iii. Which method of cropping prevents soil erosion by checking soil creep after harvesting a crop? (2)
OR
Modern cropping is based on machines from sowing to harvesting. Which is the best method of cropping for
this? (2)
