Introduction to Differential Calculus (Problem Set 7 – 3)

Problem Set 7 – 3
Text: G. D. Prichett & J. C. Saber
Solutions: Muhammad Shamim

In Problems 1 through 10, find the discontinuities, if any, for each

function:
1. f(x) = x3 + 2x – 4

Solution: Given f(x) = x3 + 2x – 4

Here f(x) is defined for all values of x. So, f(x) is continuous.
Hence for the given function, discontinuity is none. [Ans.]

2. f(x) =
x 1

1
Solution: Given f(x) =
x 1
Condition 1: f(x) is defined for all x except x = 1.
Condition 2: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x ) exists for all x except x = 1.

Condition 3: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x )  f (a ) for all x except x = 1.

Hence f(x) is discontinuous at x = 1. [Ans.]

x 1
Here f(x) is defined for all values of x. So, f(x) is continuous.

4. f(x) =
x2  4

x2
Solution: Given f(x) =
x2  4
Condition 1: f(x) is defined for all x except x = 2.
Condition 2: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x ) exists for all x except x = 2.

Condition 3: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x )  f (a ) for all x except x = 2.

Hence f(x) is discontinuous at x = 2. [Ans.]

x2  4
5. f(x) =
x2

x2  4
Solution: Given f(x) =
x2
Condition 1: f(x) is defined for all x except x = 2.
Condition 2: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x ) exists for all x except x = 2.

Condition 3: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x )  f (a ) for all x except x = 2.

Hence f(x) is discontinuous at x = 2. [Ans.]

x2
6. f(x) = 2
x  5x  6

x2 x2
Solution: Given f(x) = 2

x  5x  6 ( x  3)( x  2)

Condition 1: f(x) is defined for all x except x = 2 and x = 3.
Condition 2: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x ) exists for all x except x = 2

and x = 3.
Condition 3: By Limit Theorem, x lim a f ( x )  f (a ) for all x except x = 2

and x = 3.
Hence f(x) is discontinuous at x = 2 and x = 3. [Ans.]

x  1, x  1
7. f(x) = 

x  1, x  1
Solution: Given f(x) = 
x , x  1.

 x lim1 f ( x ) = x lim1 x  1

= 1 1 [Putting the limit value]

= 2

 x lim1 f ( x ) = x lim1 x

= 1 [Putting the limit value]

=1

 x lim1 f ( x )  x lim1 f ( x )

Hence f(x) is discontinuous at x = 1. [Ans.]

x  1, x  1

2, x  1.

x  1, x  1
Solution: Given f(x) = 
2, x  1.

 x lim 2 f ( x ) = x lim 2 f ( x )

So f(x) is continuous at x = 2.
Hence for the given function, discontinuity is none. [Ans.]
