REVERSE CURVES
• A reverse curve is a
combination of two or
more circular curves
with the center of
curvature on the
opposite side of the
curve
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1
Given the lines and direction as follows: AB= 57.6 m due
East, BC= 91.5 m N 68o E, CD = 102.6 m azimuth of 312o .
A reverse curve is to connect these three lines thus
forming the center line of a new road.
1. Compute the length of the common radius of the
reverse curve
2. If the road has a total width of 7 meters ( 3.5 meters
per lane), determine the total horizontal area of road
to be paved, in m2.

EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #2
Two parallel tangents are connected by reversed curve having
equal radii of 360 m .

1. If the central angle of the curve is 8o compute the distance

between parallel tangents .
2. Compute the length of chord from the P.C. to the P.T.

3. If P.C. is at sta. 3 + 960.40, what is the stationing of the P.T.

EXAMPLE PROBLEM #2
1. Distance between parallel tangents
x = 360 cos 8o
x-= 356.5
y= 360-356.5
Y=3.5
2y= 7.0 m
2. Length of chord from P.C. to P.T.
2 3.5
Sin 4 = 𝐿
3. Sta. of P.T.
𝑅Өπ
Lc = 180
360 (8𝑜) π
Lc = 180
Lc = 50.27
Sta. of P.T. = ( 3+ 960.4) + 50.27
Sta of P.T. = 4 + 060.94
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #3
Two tangents converge at an angle of 300. The direction of the second
tangent is due east. The distance of the P.C. from the second tangent is
116.5 m. The bearing of the common tangent is S 40o E.
1. Compute the central angle of the first curve .
2. Of a reversed curve is to connect these two tangents, determine
the common radius of the curve .
3. Compute the stationing of the P.T. if P.C. is at station 10 + 620.
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #3
1. Central Angle of the first
curve (solution is shown
on the right)
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #3
2. Radius of curve
a = RCos 30o – RCos 50o
a = R (Cos 30o - RCos 50o )
a = 0.223 R

b= R-RCos 50o
b= R(1- Cos50o )
b= 0.357 R

a + b =116.5

0.223 R + 0.357 R = 116.50

R= 200.86
EXAMPLE PROBLEM #3
3. Stationing of PT:
200.86(20) π
L1 = 180
L1 = 70.11 𝑚
200.86(50) π
L2 =
180
L2 = 175.28 m
Sta. of PT = (10 + 620) + 70.11 + 175.28
Sta of PT= 10 + 865.39
