What is Recreational
Mathematics?
 The term recreational math can refer to any game, puzzle,
or activity that teaches math skills to help participants
‘’win’’.
 Recreational math goes beyond those games into puzzles
and brainteasers that require math to solve but are not
the typical ‘’learn the formula and apply’’ approach.
Instead, using math to solve problems is part of the game
itself.
Mathematical Games
 Mathematical games are multiplayer games
whose rules, strategies, and outcomes can be
studied and explained by mathematics. The
players of the game may not need to use
mathematics in order to play mathematical games.
WHAT IS MANCALA?

§ Mancala is a board game that has

been played for thousands of years.
§ It is one of the oldest games around.
§ You can play the game with any object
that you can find.
MATHEMATICAL PUZZLE
 Mathematical puzzles require mathematics in order to solve them.
 They have specific rules, as do multiplayer games, but mathematical puzzles don't
usually involve competition between two or more players. Instead, in order to solve
such a puzzle, the solver must find a solution that satisfies the given conditions.
 Logic puzzles are a common type of mathematical puzzle. Conway's Game of Life
and fractals are also considered mathematical puzzles, even though the solver only
interacts with them by providing a set of initial conditions.

TANGRAMS
 The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of
seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put
together to form shapes. The objective of the
puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only
in outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces,

which may not overlap.

A palindrome is a number or word like ‘racecar’ that reads the same
backward as it does forward or 'symmetrical’ number like 16461, that
remains the same when its digits are reversed.
Palindromes are a popular topic in recreational mathematics because
they offer unique challenges and intriguing patterns. Examples: -
Numbers: 16461, 77, 9009, 12321 - Words: level, madam, rotor, kayak
We can experiment with different numbers and
try to create palindromes by reversing digits or
adding them together.
Let’s try 419: Let’s try 423: Let’s try 48:

419 423 48
+914 +324 +84

A: 4664 A: 747 A: 363

Rubik's cube
 The most famous of recent puzzles is the Rubik's cube
invented by the Hungarian Erno Rubik. it's fame is
incredible. Invented in 1974, patented in 1975 it was
put on the market in Hungary in 1977. However it
did not really begin as a craze until 1981. By 1982
10 million cubes had been sold in Hungary more
than the population of the country. It is estimated
that 100 million were sold world-wide.

MAGIC SQUARE
 In recreational mathematics, a magic square is a
square which is divided into smaller squares and
each smaller square usually contains distinct
integers. In a magic square, the sum of all the
integers in every horizontal, vertical and diagonal
line is the same.
1.) 1.) 2.)

2.) 3.) 3.)

4.) 4.)
THANK YOU!
Recreational problems have survived, not because they
were fostered by the textbook writers, but because of
their inherent appeal to our love of mystery.
