Third Week of Development
(Trilaminar Germ Disc)

GASTRULATION
The process of formation of trilaminar germ disc is
called gastrulation.
(ectoderm, mesoderm & endoderm)

Gastrulating begins with formation of the primitive

streak on the surface of the epiblast

Dr.Mostafa 3
PRIMITIVE GROOVE – Caudal to cranially a groove
appears on the surface of epiblast is called primitive groove.

Dr.Mostafa 4
PRIMITIVE STREAK – Epiblastic cells are elevated on
each side of the groove, it extend up to primitive node.

Dr.Mostafa 5
PRIMITIVE NODE – Collection of epiblastic cell at
the end of the primitive streak.

Dr.Mostafa 6
PRIMITIVE PITS – Collection of epiblastic
cell at the end of the primitive streak

Dr.Mostafa 7
Gastrulation : Formation of all the three germ layers

Cells from primary streak migrate then invaginate

between epiblast and hypoblast and this inward
movement is known as invagination

Some epiblast cell displace the hypoblast and form

endoderm

Other come to lie between epiblast and newly created

endoderm to form mesoderm

Remaining epiblast cells from ectoderm

Dr.Mostafa 8
Epiblast is the source of all 3 germ layer

Dr.Mostafa 9
Sacro - Coccygeal Teratoma

If epiblastic cells are persist caudally in the

primitive streak it can form teratoma

Dr.Mostafa 10
Formation Of Notocord

Dr.Mostafa 11
Formation of Notocord (Contd…)
Most cranially epiblast and hypoblast adherent called
prechordal plate, which rupture to form
buccopharyngeal membrane.
Most caudally epiblast and hypoblast adherent called
cloaca, which rupture to form anus.

Dr.Mostafa 12
Prechordal plate & Cloaca

Dr.Mostafa 13
Formation of Notocord (Contd…)
 Notochordal process is formed by epiblastic cell
 Extend from the primitive node to the buccopharyngeal
membrane
 A neurenteric canal is formed within notochordal process
which connect amniotic cavity to yolk sac.

Dr.Mostafa 14
Formation of Notocord (Contd…)
Cells of notochordal
process intermingle with
endodermal cell.

Latter they separate

from endoderm.

Cells will proliferate

and become solid cord,
the definitive notochord.

Mesoderm (Fate Map)

Dr.Mostafa 18
Mesoderm (Fate Map)
Cells that migrate from the primitive node and from
cranial end of the streak become Paraxial
mesoderm

Cells migrating through the midstreak region become

intermediate mesoderm

Those migrating through the caudal part of streak

become lateral plate mesoderm

Caudalmost part of the streak contribute to

extraembryonic

Development of the Trophoblast
Primary villi: consists of
• Cytotrophoblast
• Syncytiotrophoblast

Secondary villi: consists of

• Cytotrophoblast
• Syncytiotrophoblast
• A central core of primary
mesoderm
Tertiary villi: Consists of
• Cytotrophoblast
• Syncytotrophoblast
• Primary mesoderm
