Chapter two
Third Man Runs
Progression
Add in a 1v1 area for the players after they make
the pass to the end zone. Have them make the
pass and run into a 8x16m grind with a small goal
at each end and receive a pass and attack a resting
defender. The rotation then is the defender goes
back into the passing and the attacker becomes
the resting defernder.

Third Man Run Pattern
Description:
Very interesting practice here from Ajax. Ball is
played into first player, who takes a touch forward
and then performs a change of direction skill
move. Next is a combination play between three
players before the final pass to the third man
runner
Progression
Easy progression here can be to add in a small goal
for the third man runner to pass into goal or put a
keeper in a main goal for a shot.

Description:
Have some players start at each end with some
inside positioned for combination play and third
man run. Players move onto the next station after
they pass the ball.

Description:
Really nice practice to implement with your
players and a very effective practice to get the
intensity into your session. Key improvements for

Keep the grid size small to allow the tempo to be
quick with short sharp passing. Switch the
direction the players play to maximise
development with both feet.

Can be used as a patteren of play, working the ball
from midfield, out wide and back inside with a
combination between a 9 and 10.
Progression
You can easily take the small goal out and replace

Description:
First player runs with the ball as fast
as they can while maintaining good
control of the ball. Good quality
pass to the end player. End player
makes a bounce pass to Player 3,
who dribbles through the poles and
passes to end player.
Bonus
Get into some detail with Player 3 when
they are receiving to dribble. Work on
different moves to receive the ball
