IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Grade 10 & 11 - Part 1

Topics Covered: Number & Algebra
Table of Contents
1. Number

2. Algebra
1. Number

Key Concepts:
1.1 Types of Numbers: Natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, and irrational
numbers.

1.2 Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and order of operations

(BODMAS).

1.3 Percentages: Calculating percentages, percentage increase/decrease, and reverse

percentages.

1.4 Ratios: Simplifying ratios, dividing quantities in given ratios.

Worked Examples:
1. Simplify: 3 + 5 × 2.

Solution: Apply BODMAS: 3 + (5 × 2) = 3 + 10 = 13.

2. Calculate 20% of $50:

Solution: (20/100) × 50 = 10.

3. Divide $60 in the ratio 2:3:

Solution: Total parts = 2 + 3 = 5. Amount for 2 parts: (2/5) × 60 = $24. Amount for 3 parts:
(3/5) × 60 = $36.

Classwork:
1. Simplify: 8 × (3 + 2).

2. Calculate 15% of $120.

3. Divide $100 in the ratio 4:1.

4. Simplify: 25 - 5 × 2.

5. Find the percentage increase from $50 to $75.

Homework:
1. Simplify: 6 + 2 × 5.

2. Calculate 30% of $90.

3. Divide $150 in the ratio 3:2.

4. Simplify: 12 × (4 + 3).
5. Find the percentage decrease from $80 to $64.

Quiz:
1. Simplify: 4 × (6 + 3).

2. Calculate 25% of $200.

3. Divide $500 in the ratio 7:3.

4. Simplify: 18 - 3 × 4.

5. Find the percentage increase from $40 to $60.

2. Algebra

Key Concepts:
2.1 Simplifying Expressions: Collecting like terms, using distributive property.

2.2 Solving Equations: Linear equations, quadratic equations, and simultaneous equations.

2.3 Factorization: Factoring out common terms and factorizing quadratics.

Worked Examples:
1. Simplify 3x + 4x: Combine like terms: 3x + 4x = 7x.

2. Solve 2x + 3 = 7: Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 4, then divide by 2: x = 2.

3. Factorize x^2 + 5x + 6: Find factors of 6 that add up to 5: (x + 2)(x + 3).

Classwork:
1. Simplify 5x - 3x + 2.

2. Solve x - 4 = 9.

3. Factorize x^2 - 7x + 10.

4. Simplify 4(2x - 3).

5. Solve 3x + 5 = 2x + 8.

Homework:
1. Simplify 6x - 4x + 7.

2. Solve 3x + 2 = 14.

3. Factorize x^2 - 6x + 8.

4. Expand and simplify 5(x - 2).

5. Solve 4x + 3 = 11x - 2.

Quiz:
1. Simplify 8x - 2x.

2. Solve x/3 + 5 = 8.

3. Factorize x^2 + 9x + 20.

4. Solve 7x + 5 = 3x + 17.
5. Expand and simplify 3(x + 4).
