Problem 01: In a 100m race, Yuyan covers three quarters of the track in 7.2 s. If he is initially
at rest and maintains a constant acceleration, what is his velocity when he crosses the finish line?

Problem 02: A motor vehicle is uniformly retarded from a velocity 54 km/h and finally come
to a complete halt after 6 s. Determine:

(i) The rate at which it slowed down, and

(ii) The distance covered during this period.

Problem 03: The front of a multi-coach train 100 m long (approx.) passes a signal at a level
crossing with a speed of 115.2 km/h. If the rear of the train passes the signal later 6 s, determine:

(i) The acceleration of the train, and

(ii) The speed at which the rear of the train passes the signal.

Problem 04: Two ice skaters are initially at rest on a frictionless ice surface. Skater A has a
mass of 50 kg, and Skater B has a mass of 70 kg. Skater A pushes Skater B with a force, causing
Skater B to move away at a velocity of 3 m/s.

(i) What is the velocity of Skater A after the push?

(ii) What is the total momentum of the system after the push?

Problem 05: A particle moves along a straight line with acceleration -2 ms-2 . It starts its
motion at the origin with velocity 10 ms-1 .

(i) Write down equations for its position and velocity at time .

(ii) Find the smallest non-zero time when

(a) The object is at the origin,

(b) The velocity is zero.

(iii) Sketch the position-time, velocity-time and speed-time graphs for the interval 0<= t <=10.

Problem 06: On a motorway, a vehicle is driven from rest with an acceleration of 9 m/s 2.
Find its velocity after a 50 m drive. Is it safe to continue to accelerate if the speed limit is 120
km/h for this type of vehicle?

Problem 07: A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at a rate of 3 m/s 2 for 10 seconds
.After reaching this velocity, it continues moving at a constant velocity for 5 seconds. Finally,
the car decelerates uniformly to rest in 4 seconds.
(i) What is the maximum velocity reached by the car?

(ii) What is the total distance traveled by the car during the entire motion?

Problem 08: Jack and fill are on the rooftop of their 100 m apartment building throwing
water-filled balloons at people on the ground. Jack throws his balloon straight up into the air
with a velocity of 20 m/s. Jill throws her balloon vertically from the height (100 m) of the
building 5 seconds after Jack with a downward velocity of 20 m/s. Whose ball hits the ground
first?

Problem 09: A bus started from rest and accelerated to a speed of 60km/h as
it passed a billboard. A car moving in the same direction at a speed of 100km/h passed
the billboard 45 minutes later. How far from the billboard did the car catch up with the bus?

Problem 10:
A train 100m long travelling at 72 km/hr, overtakes another train traveling in the same direction
at 56 km/hr and passes it completely in 54 seconds.

(i) Find the length of the second train ?

(ii) Find also the time they would have taken to pass one another if they had been travelingat thes
e speeds in opposite directions ?
