What I Know

Activity #1: Copy the sentences and encircle the conjunction used in each sentence

1. Neither one of them even helped out the old woman cross the street
2. Both James and Andrew were playing their gadgets while the teacher is talking.
3. My best friend and I went to the beach to play with the sand.
4. Monica does not know about Michael and Bobby, nor about Jessica and Susan.
5. So far, he hasn’t told her the truth.

Conjunction
 the glue that holds words, phrases and clauses (both dependent and independent) together.
 serve as a cue within a sentence, signaling the reader that another idea is coming.
Three (3) Kinds of conjunctions
1. Coordinating conjunctions link ideas by showing how they relate. Commonly used coordinating conjunctions are for,
and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (FANBOYS)
F – for I drank some water, for I was thirsty.
She put on a sweater, for it was cold outside.
*for means the exact same thing as because.

A – and He was tired, and he had a headache.

N – nor She doesn’t drink milk, nor does she eat butter.
I can’t whistle, nor can I sing.
*nor means “also not”.

B – but Tom studied a lot, but he didn’t pass the test.

O – or He can buy the book, or he can borrow it from the library.

Y – yet Tom studied a lot, yet he didn’t pass the test.


*yet means the same thing as but.

S – so Maria was thirsty, so she drank some water.


It was cold outside, so she put on a sweater.

Use FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to complete each sentence.

1. She tried to learn Chinese ____ it was too difficult.


2. Last night, I was very tired ____ I went to sleep.
3. Would you like orange juice ____ cola?
4. This is Mary. She is very rich ____ she is not happy.
5. He easily passed the exams ____ he studied thoroughly.
6. Chris needed some money ____ he borrowed some from his parents.
7. I heard a noise ____ I turned the light on.
8. I would like to go ____ I am too busy.
9. We have a test on Monday ___ I'll have to study this weekend.
10. We stayed at home____ watched a film.
