INDEPENDENT STATES

HYDRABAD
▪ Founded by Nizam-ul-mulk Azad Jahan(chin qilich Khan) in 1724.

▪ Titles given by Emperor Farukshiyar

i) Khan-i-Duran
ii) Nizam-ul-mulk
▪ Diwan – Puran chand

▪ Remained independent untill 1948 Integration.

▪ The Nizam provided assistance to the British during 1857 revolt.

Independence : Delhi → Hyderabad →carnatic

Carnatic Nawab
One of the Deccan Subha of Mughal empire
Established by Aurangzeb in 1692
First nawab - Zulfikhar Ali Khan
Independence – Saadatullah khan → made Dost Ali as his successor without Nizam approval→ Causes rivalry.
MYSORE
Haider Ali
▪ Soldier → commander-in-chief →Faujadar at Dindugul→ 1761 overthrew Nanjaraja and established his authority.

▪ Established modern arsenal in Dindigul

▪ In 1761, he defeated the British (1st Mysore war). Reached the walls of Madras

▪ He died in 1982 during 2nd Mysore war.

Tipu Sultan
▪ Planted tree of liberty at srirangapatnam

▪ Becomes member of Jacobian club

▪ Assumed title of padshah in 1797.

▪ Tolerant towards other religion

▪ Gave money to construct image of Goddess sarda On shringeri temple.

▪ Famous shriranganadha temple situated just hundred yards from his palace.

▪ Died in 1799 at the gates of srirangapatnam, during 4th mysore war.


AWADH
▪ Founded – saadat Khan Burhanpur – ul - mulk (appointed by emperor Muhammad sha as governor of awadh in 1722)

▪ Commited suicide in 1739 → succeeded by Safdar Jung

▪ Highest post – Maharaja Nawab Rai ( shows religious tolerance)

BENGAL
Murshidabad Quli Khan (1717 – 27)
▪ He was made governor of bengal (1717) and Odisha (1719)

▪ Transferred capital of Bengal from Dacca → Murshidabad

▪Shuja-ud-din(1727-39)

▪ He was granted governorship of Bihar by emperor Muhammad sha Rangeela.

Sarfaraz Khan (1739-40)


▪ Killed by Bihar governor Aliwardi Khan
Aliwardi khan(1746)
▪ Hot Farman from Rangeela and legalised his position by bribe.

▪ He prevented fortifications of

British – Calcutta
French - Chandranagor
Shiraj-ud-daula (1756-57)
▪ British East india Company had rights to import/export goods in Bengal without tax and rights to issue passes or
dastaks. (Farman – 1717)
▪ These rights and passes are misused by British company servants in their private trade.

Black hole tragedy(1756 June 20)


▪ Siraj seized the English factory at Kasimbazar and marched to Calcutta and occupied fort william. 146 prisoners
locked in a small room entire night results only 23 alive.

Mir Jafar(1757-60)
▪ 1st nawab of Bengal , Bihar and Orissa under British rule in India
▪ He granted free trade right to English in Bihar Bengal and Odisha.
▪ Replaced by his son-in-law Mir quasim.
Mir Quasim (1760-64)
▪ Ceded Burdwan,midanpur and Chittagong to English for throne
▪ Shifted capital from Murshidabad to monghy.
▪ Soon revolted as he was angry with British for misusing dustaks.
Battle of buxar ( 1764 Oct 22)
▪ Mir Qasim + Shuja-ud-din + Emperor Shah Alam – II Vs British
▪ British forces won. Again Mir Jafar put on throne .Then his son Nizam-ud-daula

▪ Major part of Nawab army was Disband. Remaining army was administered by

Deputy subhedar (Resident) who is nominated by British.


Allahabad Treaty (1765 august)
▪ British got Diwani rights (right to collect revenue) of Bengal, Bihar and Odisha.

Emperor Sha Alam-II gets 26lakhs Subsidiary in return.


▪ Nawab of awadh compelled to pay 50lakhs as war Damage collateral.

▪ Robert Clive become the first governor of Bengal in 1765

▪ Dual goverment was established,
