(10 Marks)

1. Answer any ten questions from the following : [1 × 10 = 10]

(a) State fundamental theorem of arithmetic.



(b) Find the value of (1 + i 3)30 .
(c) Express (1 + i)1+i in the form A + iB.
(d) Find the value of k if {(1, 2), (3, k)} is linearly dependent.
(e) Find the remainder when x3 + 2x2 − 3x − 4 is divided by 2x − 1.
(f) If A is an orthogonal matrix of order 2 with eigenvalues λ1 , λ2 , then find the
eigenvalues of A−1 .
(g) If a|b and b|c, then show that a|c.
(h) Consider the mapping f : R → R defined by f (x) = ex . Is f a bijective mapping?
(i) Define Kernel of a linear transformation.
(j) Find the dimension of the vector space V = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x + y + z = 0}.
(k) Find L{(1, 1), (1, 2)}.
(l) Give an example of an equivalence relation on R.

a. If tan(θ + iφ) = tan β + i sec β where θ, φ, β are real and 0 < β < π, then shoe that

3. Answer all the questions from the following : [10 × 2 = 20]
a. (i) State and prove division algorithm. [5]

(ii) Solve by Cardan’s method : x3 − 18x − 35 = 0. [5]

b. (i) Determine the linear mapping T : R3 → R2 which maps the basis vectors
(1, 0, 0), (0, 1, 0), (0, 0, 1) to (1, 1), (2, 3), (3, 2) respectively. Also find Ker(T )
and Im(T ) [3+1+1]

(ii) Find a basis for the vector space R3 that contains the vector (1, 2, 0) and
(1, 3, 1). [3]

(iii) Prove that any set of vectors which contains θ is linearly dependent. [2]

c. (i) Find the value of k for which the equation x4 + 4x3 − 2x2 − 12x + k = 0 has
four real and unequal roots. [4]

(ii) Determine the condition for which the system

x+y+z = 1
x + 2y − z = b
5x + 7y + az = b2
admits of (I) unique solution, (II) no solution and (III) many solutions. [5]

(iii) What is dimension of a vector space [1]
