Passive Solar Design Now that we know the tools required to assess @ building for energy rating we need to start looking at how we can design the building to be energy efficient. ‘There is no point going through the pracess of designing a building and client approval, only to find out once you do the assessment that you are no where near achieving the minimum required 6-star rating. And a very long way away from a Net Zero Energy building ‘You must start the process by designing a low energy building in the first place. ‘Areally good website for information about designing buildings is the YourHome website, Itis a really good starting place. Before you click these, scroll down the main body of the page. You will notice that al the Items on the left are summarised within the body text, ‘When you find a topic on which you want more information, simply click on the tab on the left hand side and it will open up more Information. Click on the Orientation tab, One of the most important features of house design is orientation of the building, Read this section and make your own notes about orientation, Click on the rest ofthe tabs from Shading through to Skylights and make notes on the various sections. For housing, this section on Passive Design will be the section you will come back to again and again, So having nates is going to be vital when using these ideas in the design projects. Make the notes as detailed as you need them so that you can understand the principles and how to incorporate them into your designs.
