Reflection Paper

IPHP 11 - St. Bernward

The debate we had yesterday was about the topic “Lowering the age of imprisonment”, and by
that we were split into two teams, The affirmative and opposing team. Each team has 3 main
speakers stating their main points. For the other members, they helped with the research about
the said topic and for the counter-arguments. As this is an open debate, any members of the
group can throw statements or questions while having the rebuttal. For this debate the affirmative
team agrees that it should be lowered, while the opposing team does not. The debate started with
the first speaker of the affirmative team, with only one minute they had to state their opinion as
to why it should be lowered. After that it was time for a 10 minute rebuttal and for the opposing
team to ask questions to the affirmative team. With the 10 minutes we have, we were throwing
questions to each other and opinions about the said topic. After the 10 minute rebuttal it was time
for the first speaker of the opposing team to state their opinion as to why it should not be
lowered. After that we had another rebuttal, but this time it was the affirmative team to ask
questions to the opposing team. This went on until the last speaker of the opposing team. The
main speakers stated their main points and had a back to back rebuttal. We also had one 1 minute
to discuss with the group for our counter-argument. While having the debate, most of the
members in each group were talking about their opinions while the speaker stated their reason,
also in the rebuttal part. They helped give more information for the main speakers to fight back.

As for the question, How does this connect to our lesson? Well, for our next lesson that we are
going to tackle is “Truth and Opinions”. So, how does this connect to our lesson you may ask?
It’s because in a debate, we state our opinion, stance, and truth. Also to convince the opposition
that you are right. Each team had statements that consisted of their own understanding or rather
opinion. Convincing that they are right. Although truth and opinions differ, Truth is neither an
opinion nor a fact. It is universal, undisputed, verified through facts, and even transcendent,
beyond a reasonable doubt. In other words, the truth will always be true no matter what a person
thinks and says. Truth does not change; While opinion is a view or judgment formed about
something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Also Opinions are part of the whole,
while the truth is the whole itself. These two are very important when it comes to debate because
we state the truth about a certain topic and also stating our own opinion or views with the topic.
