Bar Pendulum Practical

BSc 1st Year Presentation

[Your Name]
BSc Computer Science, 1st Semester
Introduction
• • What is a Bar Pendulum?
• - A rigid bar with holes at regular intervals,
used to study simple harmonic motion.
• - It is a practical tool to determine the
acceleration due to gravity (g) experimentally.
Parts of a Bar Pendulum
• • Main Components:
• - Rigid bar with holes
• - Knife edges for suspension
• - Measuring scale
• - Stopwatch for timing oscillations
Principle
• • Working Principle:
• - The bar pendulum works on the principle of
oscillatory motion.
• - The time period (T) is related to the
moment of inertia and center of gravity.
• - T² = (4π² / g) × (L - h), where L is the length
of the pendulum and h is the distance of
pivot.
Objective of the Practical
• • To determine the value of acceleration due
to gravity (g) using a bar pendulum.
• • To study the dependence of time period on
the position of the pivot.
Procedure
• 1. Suspend the bar pendulum on a knife edge
through one of its holes.
• 2. Measure the distance of the pivot from the
center of gravity.
• 3. Displace the pendulum slightly and record
the time for 20 oscillations using a stopwatch.
• 4. Repeat the steps for different holes.
• 5. Calculate the time period (T) and plot T² vs.
distance.
Observation Table
• | Hole Position | Distance from CG (cm) |
Time for 20 Oscillations (s) | Time Period (T)
(s) | T² (s²) |

Formula and Calculations
• • Formula:
• - Time Period (T) = Total Time for 20
Oscillations / 20
• - g = (4π² × Length of Pendulum) / (T² ×
Effective Length)
• • Plot T² vs. Distance and find the value of g
from the slope.
Result
• • Acceleration due to gravity (g) = [Value] m/s²
(experimental value).
• • Mention the percentage error compared to
the theoretical value.
Applications
• • Used to study simple harmonic motion in
rigid bodies.
• • Helps in determining acceleration due to
gravity experimentally.
• • Useful in verifying theoretical predictions of
pendulum motion.
Advantages
• • Simple setup and easy to conduct the
experiment.
• • Provides accurate results for g when
properly executed.
Limitations
• • Susceptible to human errors in timing.
• • Assumes negligible air resistance and friction
at the pivot.
Conclusion
• • The bar pendulum is an effective tool to
measure acceleration due to gravity.
• • Experiment demonstrates the principles of
simple harmonic motion and oscillatory
behavior.
