DEFINITION OF GUIDANCE

Guidance refers to advice, direction, or instruction provided to help

someone make decisions, understand something, or navigate a
particular situation. It can be formal or informal, and it typically
involves offering support or expertise to lead someone toward
achieving their goals, resolving challenges, or understanding concepts
more clearly.

E.G. Williamson (1939): E.G. Williamson, a prominent figure in

guidance counseling, defined guidance as a process that aims to help
individuals make decisions related to their personal, educational, and
vocational growth. He emphasized that guidance involves the use of
both individual and group counseling techniques to assist individuals
in understanding themselves and their environment.

G. D. Kelly (1955): Kelly viewed guidance as a systematic

process of helping individuals make informed decisions. He argued
that it assists people in understanding themselves, their abilities, and
the choices they need to make in life, especially regarding their
educational and vocational paths.

S. K. Mangal (2002): According to S. K. Mangal, guidance is an

educational service that aids students in discovering their potential,
making optimal decisions about their education, and managing their
personal and social lives. It helps them to understand their capabilities
and how to make choices about their career and life paths.
DEFINITION OF COUNSELLING
Counseling is a professional, structured process where a trained counselor
helps individuals or groups address personal, emotional, psychological, or
relational issues. It typically involves providing support, guidance, and
techniques to help clients understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors,
and work through challenges or difficulties they may be facing.

 Carl Rogers (1951): Carl Rogers, one of the most influential figures in
counseling, defined counseling as a therapeutic relationship in which the
counselor provides a non-judgmental, empathetic environment for the
individual to explore their emotions, thoughts, and experiences. This helps
the individual gain self-understanding and personal growth.

 John J. McKenny (1961): McKenny defined counseling as a process

through which an individual seeks professional help for personal issues. The
counselor assists the client in exploring their emotions, behaviors, and
challenges to promote psychological well-being and identify effective
solutions.

 Donald Super (1980): Super, a key figure in career counseling, viewed

counseling as a developmental process aimed at helping individuals
navigate life roles and career development. He emphasized the importance
of aligning an individual’s personal goals with their social and professional
roles to achieve personal fulfillment.

Counseling aims to promote mental well-being, personal development, and

problem-solving by creating a safe, confidential environment for open
discussion. It may focus on a variety of concerns, such as:

1. Emotional issues (e.g., stress, anxiety, depression).

2. Behavioral challenges (e.g., addiction, anger management).
3. Interpersonal conflicts (e.g., relationship problems, family
dynamics).
4. Life transitions (e.g., grief, career changes, trauma recovery).

Counseling can take various forms, such as individual counseling, group

therapy, marriage or family counseling, and career counseling, and it may
employ different therapeutic approaches based on the client's needs (e.g.,
cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, humanistic
approaches).
