GRAPHING LINES

To graph a line from an equation, you need to plot points to show where the line lies on the grid. A table
can be used to record pairs of numbers that are used as coordinates for the points.

TASK 1 Graph y = 4x + 2

STEP 1 – Create a table of values

Complete the working below to calculate the missing values from the table for y = 4x + 2.

1
x 2 0 4

1
a If x = 2 b If x = 0 c If x =
4

y = 4 × (2) + 2 y=4×0+2 y=4×

= 8 + 2 = =

STEP 2 – Decide on a scale and draw the axes

Choose a scale that allows you to include all the
numbers in the table.
Draw the x and y-axes in a position on the grid that
will suit the values you need. You do not have to
draw the axes in the centre of the grid.

STEP 3 – Plot the ordered pairs

On your axes, plot the points from your table and
then draw the line. Extend your line to the edges of
the graph. If your three points do not lie in one
straight line, check your working above or check
where you plotted the points.

11.2 Plotting graphs

TASK 2 Graph y = 7 – x

STEP 1 – Create a table of values

Complete the table of values for y = 7 – x. 1
x 1 2

y 0

STEP 2 – Decide on a scale and draw the axes

Choose a scale that allows you to include all the
numbers in the table.
Draw the x and y-axes in a position on the grid that
will suit the values you need. You do not have to
draw the axes in the centre of the grid.

STEP 3 – Plot the ordered pairs

On your axes, plot the points from your table and then
draw the line. Extend your line to the edges of the
graph. If your three points do not lie in one straight
line, check your working above or check where you
plotted the points.

TASK 3 Graph other equations

For each equation below:

create a table and choose three sensible values for x

use the equation to calculate values of y
draw up a set of axes using a suitable scale for the values in your table
plot the points and draw the line

y=x+1 x y = 1 – 2x
a b y c
