Preface: How To Use This Book
<Seoul National University Korean Language 1A Student’s Book> is the first volume in the multi-level series developed
to be used in a regular program (about 200 hours of class work) for adult learners of the Korean language. The primary
goal of this book is to help novice learners of Korean language so that they may build basic communicative competence
by developing their ability to construct language about topics of interest and apply language in real life situations. The key
features of this book follow.
This textbook is carefully coordinated to link spoken language and written language while focusing on the development
of communicative language skills. It utilizes a step-by-step approach consisting of vocabulary and grammar practice,
controlled conversation practice, and open-ended interaction. Through this approach, knowledge about language transfers to
real language use. In addition, ‘Listening and Speaking’ and ‘Reading and Writing’ sections integrate spoken language and The Seoul National University Korean 1A Student’s Book is comprised of 8 units preceded

The Korean alphabet ‘Hangeul’ was created in 1443 by a team of scholars in the royal
research organization named the Jiphyeonjeon, Hall of Worthies, under the direction of King
Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. In 1446, the first Korean alphabet was proclaimed under the
