Anglo-Saxons

Daily Life 4
Daily life for Anglo-Saxons was very different to today. If you
travelled back in time, you might not recognise the food or the
clothes, and you’d definitely find life as a child much harder than
you do today.
Food
Food was an integral part of Anglo-Saxon life. They loved a good
feast and would often have huge feasts in the chief’s house.
These were often filled with roasted meats, bread and beer. The
only entertainment at the time was singers and storytellers, so
many classic myths of the time were told around the table.
The Anglo-Saxons were farmers in Europe, and they brought
these traditions over to Britain with them. They grew wheat and
barley amongst much else. They knew how to grow many types
of vegetables and planted fruit trees across the country. They
farmed pigs, sheep and cows.
Clothing
Cotton wasn’t imported into Britain until five hundred years
after the Anglo-Saxons were defeated. Instead, clothing had to
be made from whatever they had to hand. The most common
material was wool, which was used to make most of the clothes.
This included things like trousers. Can you imagine wearing
woollen trousers? Even underwear was made of wool!
