TECHNOLOGY-BASED ART

INTRODUCTION
Technology-Based Art is essentially
computer-generated or manipulated.
Today’s computer artists employ the ever-
expanding powers of image manipulation
programs and applications to create their
works which can appear in an entire range of
media – whether as a physical output or a
virtual experience.
Through the centuries, visual artists
used actual brushes and palettes, and a
whole array of paints, inks, and natural
pigments applied to paper, canvas, fabric,
walls, and ceilings.

COMPUTER/DIGITAL ART
Computer/Digital Arts
make use of electronic and
mechanical devices, rather
than the artist’s own hand. It
first came on the scene in
the early 1960s.
COMPUTER/DIGITAL ARTS
The early experimenters were not
necessarily artists, but engineers and
scientists who had access to and
experience with the hardware needed.

It was they who began to recognize the

potential of artistic expression through
the application of scientific and
mathematical principles.
- In recent decades, personal gadgets such
as laptops, tablets, and Android phones
have incorporated the artistic capabilities of
large-scale computers. So it is now possible
for anyone to be a digital artist.

Computer-generated image (CGI) can be
defined as any image that is created
with the use of a computer-based
processor or program.

Because computers nowadays are so

widely used, these images are therefore
remarkably pervasive.
FRIEDER NAKE, 1965

POLYGON DRAWINGS

Along with George Nees, Max Bense’s student Frieder

Nake was in 1965 among the first programmers to give the
general public an opportunity of scrutinizing freely designed
computer graphics produced on digital computers.

A polygon is drawn randomly with many

randomly generated sides and directions.
GEORGE NEES, 1965

SCHROTTER

Schotter is a computer graphic from the 1960s,

produced by a structured operation by random
generators that lead to the discovery of new images.

This graphic visually displays the relationship

between order and disorder, and the effects of
change.
VERA MOLNAR, 1974

ORDRES

Vera Molnar creates a pattern of concentric

squares which is randomly disrupted in order to
highlight the contrast between order and
disorder

The title suggests a wordplay in French between two

meanings: “désordres” (disorders) and “des ordres”
(some orders), which implies that within the apparent
disarray one can find an underlying logic.
RONALD DAVIS, 1997

MOUNTAIN AND STAUROLYTE

Ronald Davis is a contemporary American artist best

known for his work associated with Geometric
Abstraction, Abstract Illusionism, Lyrical Abstraction,
and Hard-Edge painting.

THE PHILIPPINE SCENE
From the 1960s to the1990s, their computer-generated
works were primarily geared toward illustrating for
international comic books.

Filipino illustrators earned quite a

reputation for their talents and were
highly in demand in this field. They
eventually became equally sought after
as animators for some of the major film
production companies in the United
States and animated television series
produced in different countries.

DIGITAL ART IN THE HANDS OF EVERYONE
Computer technology has by now invaded
every aspect of modern life. It was, therefore,
inevitable that it would develop into forms and
devices that could be mass-produced, mass-
distributed, and thus widely accessible to
everyone. In other words, anyone with a
computer device-from a desktop PC to a
laptop, to a tablet or android phone- can now
capture and image and edit images and
videos; create, manipulate, and share works of
art; and even compose music. You can be -
and probably already are - a digital artist in
your own right.
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

• Was digital art readily accepted and

recognized as “true art” when it merged in the
1960s? What was the reason for this?
• What devices can now be used to create
digital art? Do you own one such device?
MOBILE
PHONE ART
COMPUTER-GENERATED IMAGES
The mobile phone that you
constantly hold has evolved
from a mere communication
tool, into a creative device
that allows you to generate
original works of art for an
entire range of purposes.
Personal photographs and videos can be manipulated
with a myriad special effects, both visual as well as
sound and music.
You are probably already familiar with
the following image manipulation
programs and applications that run on
todays IOS and android devices:

There are scaled-down versions of such programs

specifically developed for use on smaller, handheld
units like your personal tablet or android phone.
These enable you to perform virtually all of
the tasks that a program like illustrator
performs but, almost literally, in the palm of
your hand. Among such programs are:

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

It is used for producing icons, graphical
design elements, and art for user interface
components and mockups.
PAINT.NET It is a professional quality

“Create your pixel artwork using your

reference”
EXHIBIT OF TECHNOLOGY-BASED ART
Having learned the concept and techniques of
mobile phone art and computer-generated images,
you can now prepare your artwork for the
culminating exhibition at the end of the quarter.

All the finished artworks need to be labeled with

original titles, your name or your group members‘
names, the date, and the techniques used.
Practice, Practice, Practice

Capture an image using your cellphone Create an image from scratch using a
cameras drawing/illustration program on a
computer, laptop or tablet
Next thing to do…

Save your captured image or finished illustration in

preparation for transforming it into an example of cellular
phone art or computer - generated art
Then…

Using any of the applications installed in your available

device(s), experiment with different effects and features to
modify your saved images or illustration.
Finally…

Save the most unique, striking, ir remarkable modified

images to be printed out later for inclusion in the
culminating Exhibit on Computer/Digital Art
