WHAT IS HIV?

According to the World Health Organization, Health Immunodeficiency


Virus or most commonly known HIV is an infection known to attack a
person’s immune system making it easier for other diseases to enter the
body. There are 2 types of HIV, specifically HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-2 is
the same however it develops slower and is resistant to medications that can
treat HIV-1.

May experience loneliness as a result of being rejected by their
friends, family, and communities.

Healthcare professionals may refuse to treat HIV-positive patents or
treat them poorly.
4. Employment Discrimination

Experience discrimination at work, such as being fired or denied
employment opportunities.
5. Stigma in Healthcare Settings

May be classified as “HIV-positive” or receive alternative
treatment.
6. Fear of Transmission

Many people are afraid of catching HIV via casual contact, which
breeds stigma and discrimination.
7. Stereotyping
7.
HIV-positive individuals are frequently stigmatised as immoral or as
partaking in dangerous behaviours.
8. Cultural and Religious Beliefs
8.
Can worsen stigma and prejudice against HIV-positive individuals,
particularly in settings where the virus is seen as a punishment or
curse.
