1. Opening:
 The diagram illustrates how much/how many S + V + place + time (active form)
 The diagram illustrates how much/how many S + be + P.P + place + time

2. Overview:
 In general, there (be) an upward/ a downward trend/ a fluctuation/ a stability in the

 Using relative clauses to compare the numbers in the first year:

that of men counterparts.

Ex: The percentage of mortal rate recorded in Jamaica, which accounted for 45%, was 2 times
as much as that of Sri Lanka.

 5 structures to describe the change:

1. Subject + Verb + Adverb + Number + Time period


Ex: The number of older people in that area increased sharply to 23,000 in the year 2010.

2. There + be + a/an + Adjective + noun + of/ to + number + in + Object + complement +


Time period
Ex: There was a sharp increase of 30% in the amount of fossil fuels consumption in 2010

3. Subject + experienced/ saw/ witnessed + a/an + adjective + noun + number + time


period
Ex: The population in the USA witnessed a considerable decrease to 20% in the global
population in 2012.
4. A/an + adj + noun + number + was seen + in subject + time period
Ex: A marginal increase of 50,000 tons of honey bee was seen in the total honeybee production
in 1995.

5. Time period + witnessed/saw + a/an + adj + noun + in + noun phrase


Ex: 2016 saw a slight growth of 2,000 trees planted by the government.
