INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES;

Answer all the eight questions in section A and any five questions from

section B.

Any additional question(s) answered will not be marked.

All necessary working must be shown clearly.

Begin each answer on a fresh sheet of paper.

Silent, non-programmable scientific calculators and mathematical tables

with a list of formulae may be used.


SECTION A (40 MARKS)

Answer all the questions in this section.

1.Solve the equation 2cos2  + cos2 = 2 for 0    180 (05 marks)


2.If the polynomial x 4 + px3 − x 2 + qx −12 has factors of x +1 and ( )
( x + 2) , find the constants p and q and the remaining factors.

5.Find the volume of the solid generated when the region bounded by

the curve y = cos x ,the x-axis and the ordinates x = 0 and x = 

is rotated through 2 radians about the x-axis. (05 marks)

6. O, A and C are non-collinear points where O is the origin and

OA = a and OB = b and C is the mid-point of AB . D is a point such


that OD : DB = 1:3 . T is a point of intersection of OC and AD

produced. Find DT in terms of a and b . (05 marks)

7.The 5th ,9th and 16th terms of an A.P are in a G.P. Find the common

ratio of the G.P. Hence prove that the 21st ,37th and 65th terms of

the A.P are also in a G.P. (05 marks)


8.Find the equation of the normal to the curve
