An influencer, by definition, is someone who has the power to affect the buying
decisions of others. It is important to note that these people are not merely1
marketing tools but also have many followers that brands need to achieve their
marketing objectives. This is a big advantage!
On social media, influencers are people who have built a reputation for their
knowledge and expertise2 in a specific topic. They make regular posts about that
topic on their preferred social media channels and generate large followings of
enthusiasts3. Brands love social media influencers because they can create trends
and encourage their followers to buy the products they promote.
What teenagers need to understand, though, is that influencers only show
them the parts of their lives on social media that they want to. They don’t show
the struggles or the sleepless nights that they spend worrying about things. So,
this is an example of how social media influencers impact teens, and it’s time we
realise that not everything on social media is what it seems to be.
