What’s In
Why is it important to know who you really are? It has been said that knowing yourself
is not to discover who you really are. It is not just about discovering yourself as a human being.

But rather, knowing yourself is a journey that every person must experience. We set our
purpose in our everyday journey. Without a purpose, we are like lost in space and wandering
around without reasons. Knowing yourself means discovering your strengths and
weaknesses. It is about knowing your passions and fears, your desires and dreams, your
thoughts and feelings, your likes and dislikes, your tolerances and limitations.

Our personality matters as it may be linked in reaching our destination. We have traits
and unique characteristics that is consistent to our individuality and behavior.

By knowing all this things, makes yourself determined to keep going with your life even
if when you are tired, helpless and abandoned. Are you now ready to know yourself?

What is It

Ideal Self Actual Self

9
Reading 1: SELF-CONCEPT

Imagine yourself looking into mirror. What do you see? Do you see your ideal self or
your actual self? Your ideal self is the self that you aspire to be. It is the one that you hope will
possess characteristics similar to that of a mentor or some other worldly figure. Your actual
self, however, is the one that actually see. It is the self that has characteristics that you were
nurtured or, in some cases, born to have.

The actual self and the ideal self are two broad categories of self-concept. Self-concept
refers to your awareness of yourself. It is the construct that negotiates these two selves. In
other words, it connotes first the identification of the ideal self as separate from others, and
second, it encompasses all the behaviors evaluated in the actual self that you engage in to
reach the ideal self.

The actual self is built on self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is derived from social

interactions that provide insight into how others react to you. The actual self is who actually
are. It is how we think, how we feel, look, and act. The actual self can be seen by other, but
because no way of truly knowing how others view us, the actual self is our self-image.

The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to be. It is an idealized image that
we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced. The ideal
self could include components of what our parents have thought us, what we admire in others,
what society promotes, and what we think is in our best interest.

There is a negotiation that exists between the two selves which is complex because
there are numerous exchanges between ideal and actual self. These exchanges are
exemplified in social roles that are adjusted and re-adjusted, and are derived from outcomes
of social interactions from infant to adult development. Alignment is important. If the way that
I am (the actual self) is aligned with the way that I want to be (the ideal self), then I will feel a
sense of mental well-being or peace of mind. If the way that I am is not aligned with how I
want to be, the incongruence, or lack of alignment, will result in mental distress or anxiety.
The greater the level of incongruence between the ideal self and real self, the greater resulting
to distress. Personal development modules ultimate aim is greater self-knowledge that will
lead to higher alignment between these two personality domains.

Reading 2: BUILD ON YOUR STRENGHTS AND WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES

Most failures emanate from weaknesses that are not recognized or probably
recognized but not given appropriate attention or remedy. This could be a weakness in
communications, personality or ability. Instead of giving up indulging in self-pity, take action.
Go for speech lessons, get skills upgrading, attend personality development sessions or
whatever appropriate remedies to your perceived weaknesses.
Instead of simply focusing on your weaknesses, recognize your own talents and
abilities, build on them, utilize them to your greatest advantage. This is where you can build
your name and popularity. Handicapped people like Jose Feliciano and other blind singers did
not brood over their physical handicap. They recognized that they have a golden voice so they
search for ways enrich that talent and now they have won international fame in the field of
music.

Reading 3: Journal Writing: My Journey Towards Personal Reflection

Reflection plays a vital role in student learning experience. When you are reflecting, it
is just as important that you make an account of what you have in mind. It is where journal
writing comes in. Writing a journal serves as personal reflective process to improve individual
decision-making ability.

Let us first define reflection, it has been defined as a process regarding thinking about
and exploring an issue of concern, which is triggered by an experience. As students’ progress
through their education, they must practice, enhance, and habitually use their reflection skills.
It has been noted that by recording all significant experiences, feelings, and thoughts, the
journal writers are able to recreate their experiences for further examination.

As a journal writer, you are developing your critical thinking ability, increase confidence
and a much careful thought about your action.

11
For the purpose of this module, you can use the simple journal format below. So what
are you waiting for! Start learning and write your own journal towards your personal journey.

Independent Assessment 2

Read and Learn!

Directions: Read the short story below. Answer the questions in just one sentence.

WEAKNESS OR STRENGTH

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength.

Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study Judo despite the
fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. The boy began lessons with
an old Japanese Judo Master Sensei.

The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the
master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei," the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?’

“This is the only move you know. but this is the only move you will ever know," the Sensei
replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the Sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the
boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after
some time, his opponent became impatient and charged. The boy deftly used his one move
to win the match.

Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the boy
appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a
time-out.

He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened.

“No," the Sensei insisted, “Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake. He dropped his guard.
Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament.

He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and Sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then
the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

“You won for two reasons," the Sensei answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the
most difficult throws in all of Judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for
your opponent to grab your left arm."

The boy biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

Direction: Write your answers in a one whole sheet of paper and attached it to your journal.

How do you perceive yourself?

Look at the results of your self-concept inventory and answer the following questions.
1. In what areas do you consider yourself strong (with score 14-16 or somewhat
weak (score of 10-13) and very weak (below 10).
2. Are these qualities you consider as your weakness but other people consider as
your strength? What are these? Check with any of your family member.
Example: A lady can say “I am ugly” yet other consider her very charming. Or conversely,
one can have the illusion of saying “I am very intelligent or competent” when most of his
ideas sound unreasonable or illogical to most of the people. There is indeed a big
difference between what you see in yourself (real self-image) and what is projected in the
eyes of the others (your social image).
3. How realistic is your self-image?
4. To what extent does it reflect your real self?

A haiku is traditionally a Japanese poem consisting of three short lines that do not rhyme.
The origins of haiku poems can be traced back as far as the 9th century. In Japanese, there
are five "moras" in the first and third line, and seven in the second, following the standard 5-
7-5 structure of haiku. A mora is a sound unit, much like a syllable, but is not identical to it.
A haiku is considered to be more than a type of poem; it is a way of looking at the
physical world and seeing something deeper, like the very nature of existence. It should leave
the reader with a strong feeling or impression.

Here is an examples of 20th-century haiku poem:

From across the lake,

Past the black winter trees,
Faint sounds of a flute.
- Richard Wright

Explain the concepts that you have learned from this module by expressing it through
haiku.

Ask your teacher, classmate and a family member to read your haiku. Then, let them
write or tell their comments and suggestions.

*Note: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You are limited only from your own imagination
and it is solely up to you on how are you going to write them. Good Luck!
