Calcutta Dura Puja has been put on Enesco poetically named Representative
List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The idea of an intangible
heritage of humanity is conceptually compelling; it inspiring, too, in an
aesthetic sense, because of its very impracticality the words intangible and
humanity suggest that everything could, potentially, be included in such a
list. What better encompasses the messiness and beauty of everything
including the ephemeral quality that intangible suggests than the Pujas By
the time Richard Wagner came up with the term Gesamtkunstwerk,
meaning total work of art , in 1849, the Pujas in North Calcutta were already
on their way towards turning into at least that the sense we get from
effervescent accounts in Kaliprasanna Sinha Hutom Pyanchar Naksha the
unclassifiable 10 day long public event they would become in the 20th
century. Inflation as a global phenomenon last made headlines in the 1970s.
There are growing signs that we may have to re run soon but with a
difference. The underlying causes are different and there is a school of
thought among central bankers that we are in uncharted waters. One way
to get a grip on the issue is to look at what three central banks, US Federal
Reserve, Bank of England and the RBI, have been doing recently. None of
these economies have crossed the threshold of full economic recovery from
the pandemic, but their central banks have either overtly or subtly shifted
positions. BoE last week became the first major central bank to increase its
policy interest rate to combat inflation. Given an inflation target of 2%, BoE
had to contend with a two percentage point increase over just two months
in UK CPI inflation, which was 5.1% in November. The same month

The US Fed, in particular. Some effects will be transmitted through the
foreign exchange and debt markets. It may well catalyze changes in RBI
policy rate at a time which is out of sync with popular market expectations.
2022 is set to be a challenge for India economic policymakers. Riding high
after forcing the Union government to withdraw the three farm laws,
farmer unions are now contemplating taking the political plunge. In fact,
Bharatiya Kisan Union Charuni national president Gurnam Singh Charuni has
already launched a political party Sanyukt Sang harsh Party with the aim of
contesting the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab. While anyone is free
to launch a political party, farmer unions need to think through this move
carefully. The last thing they need is for their recent success to go to their
head. This would actually undermine their cause of representing farmer
interests and expose them as opportunists. While the farm laws were
broadly correct this newspaper has been clear about the desperate need for
agriculture reforms the reason why farmer unions were successful in their
yearlong agitation is that they were seen as representing farmer interests
cutting across communities in Punjab, Haryana and western UP. This made
it near impossible for any political party to take sides against them. This is
further exemplified by all major political parties taking a pro farmer stance
in the campaigning for the next round of state polls. This then begs the
question if there is any need for farmer unions to take the political plunge
when existing political parties are already keenly responding to them. Plus,
interest specific political parties don t has a good track record in India. True,
parties like SP may claim Mandala

A candle can light up the darkness and we are able to move around in the
dark. A Christian journal tells us that God light gives us spiritual insights and
understanding that enables us to see far enough to take steps forward.
Faith in Jesus, in the same way, may not help us to see miles before us, but
it helps to light up our path, enough to continue forward, even if it means
taking one step at a time. Light is also associated with truth. The light of
Jesus exposes whatever exists, both good and bad. We cannot hide our
transgressions. He knows and sees all. As Rev Michael Van Sloan says, the
symbolism of light is a rich symbol. It can represent sacredness,
blessedness, purity, innocence, goodness, perfection, glory, wonder,
intelligence, enlightenment, wisdom, divinity, joy, truth and the presence of
God. God does not leave our side in every season of darkness that we might
experience in our lives. We know that someday morning will come. Night
never lasts forever. In the meantime, as we continue our journey on this
earth we have Immanuel or God who is with us. And as an American pastor
famously says that means we can return to the dark again and again,
rejoicing and praising God for the light we have and the one who loves us
enough to remain with us all through our lives. External threats such as

Of situational awareness that is his failure to know aircraft actual position in
relation to the ground below and to the ground ahead on the course he is
flying. A few of the precursors of CFIT are: low clouds, poor visibility,
altimeter setting error, and low on fuel. Prime Minister Desai To 124K took
off from Palma for Johan at 0515 pm on 04 November 1977. It attempted to
land at Johan at about 0730 pm, that is about three hours after sunset at
04:29 pm. The night was moon less and dark. For night landing, Johan had a
flare path marked with World War 2 vintage gooseneck flares. Gooseneck is
a wick in kerosene which is lit up. Pilot had to judge his approach path and
height above ground from the perspective of the flare path and from the
altimeter. To judge the approach path from the perspective of a flare path is
difficult. In 1961, renowned composer Anil Biwa son Praveen, an IAF cadet,
was killed in a CFIT. On a cloudless, visibility unlimited night, flying a Dakota,
judging his approach path from the flare path at Begum pet airfield, he
crashed into terrain. To 124K pilots mostly used Instrument landing system
ILS for approach and landing during day and during night. They had little
practice in judging approach path from the perspective of flare path alone.
The only navigation aids Johan had been a Medium Frequency Non
Directional Beacon NDB, and a Very High Frequency Direction Finder VHF
DF. The only thing these could do was to show the pilot the direction of the
airfield from the aircraft position. And thus help the aircraft come overhead
the airfield. Weather forecast for Johan was cloud base 150 meters and
visibility two kilometers. In such weather, for TU 124 class aircraft, landing
without ILS would be extremel

Now did a timed circuit to bring him on the approach path. This type of
circuit is not practiced. You cannot perform what you have not practiced.
Since he was high on the previous approach, he would aim to come below
cloud at a sufficient distance from the flare path. So that he would have
time to correct for vertical and lateral shift from the correct approach path.
Once again, he was relying on the Johan NDB and DR to do that. The two
altimeters were not reset. So, these did not tell the height above ground
level agl. Aircraft was running out of fuel. If it could not land, it would crash.
The stress of that and the high workload of flying the aircraft on
instruments and peering out from time to time to sight the flare path all
created a situation where the height agl was not monitored. At a point on
approach where the aircraft should have been 150 200 meters agl, it hit a
tall meeker acacia tree. Left side bottom of the fuselage was ripped open.
Pilot fell through the ripped bottom about fifty meters after the tree. The
below cloud at a sufficient distance from the flare path. So that he would
have time to correct for vertical and lateral shift from the correct other four
fell out after that. They all died on impact. Their bodies strewn over nine
hundred meters along the path of the aircraft. The aircraft was still
airborne. At a height of about twenty meters, it struck a large patch of fully
grown and mature cultivated bamboo plantation. The bamboos acted like a
spring loaded cushion and arrested aircraft downward and forward speed
causing it to slide safely and softly on to the adjoining field of rice paddy.
The aircraft slid over the mud for a short distance and came to a stop. It was

In a country obsessed with wealth, Elton Musk tryst last November with a
$300 billion fortune more than, say, the GDP of Pakistan that made him the
richest man on the planet occasioned surprisingly muted notice in the US.
Tesla, the electric car company he founded and of which he owns 23%, has
been on a tear towards a trillion dollar valuation. So it was inevitable that
along with his stakes in other companies, he would become the first person
to breach the $300 billion milestone. Two lynching following what been
termed as sacrilegious conduct, first, at the Golden Temple and then at a
Kapurthala gurdwara, raise several worrying questions about policing,
politics and religious tensions in Punjab. Deliberate attempts at desecrating
any place of worship of any community are reprehensible but chilling mob
justice is even more disturbing. All the more so when lynchings don t
immediately put the police into action and politicians, cutting across party
lines, fail to condemn what can only be described as murder by a mob.
Particularly reprehensible was Congress state unit chief Navjot Sidhu call for
public execution of the sacrilege accused. This is unconscionable coming
from a man who aspires to be chief minister but it demonstrates the extent
to which leaders are prepared to go in stoking religious aggression for votes.
Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Sidhu arch foe in power politics, was
little better than his rival when he suggested there a conspiracy. Crying
conspiracy may be part of a politician SOP. But some restraint is necessary
for a CM when he knows full well that such statements can only encourage
more mob action. Some have argued that the police and CBI failure to solve

To boost its ties with all five central Asian nations Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,

with the foreign ministers of these countries flying down to New Delhi to
attend the third central Asia dialogue over the weekend. This comes on the
heels of the announcement that the presidents of these nations will be
chief guests at next month Republic Day celebrations. It is also noteworthy
that the national security advisers of the five nations participated in the
India hosted regional security dialogue on Afghanistan in November. In fact,
central Asian republics have been tracking closer to the Indian position on
Afghanistan, opposing foreign interference and use of Afghan soil for terror
activities. This is in stark contrast to Pakistan and China approach, which is
betting solely on Taliban to stabilise Afghanistan. While there is no denying
that the Afghan situation has galvanised India latest outreach to central
Asian republics, there is also much scope for independent cooperation in
trade, energy and connectivity. Interestingly, during their visit, central Asian
foreign ministers agreed that connectivity initiatives should be based on
principles of transparency and respect for sovereignty the formulation is
used by India to oppose China opaque Belt and Road projects that have
already seen countries fall into debt traps and sign away strategic assets.
Against this backdrop, central Asian republics are looking to hedge against
China massive presence in their countries. And India with its expertise in
sectors such as IT, space and medicine offers the perfect fit. In return,
central Asian republics with their massive natural resources from gas to
uranium can fuel Ind

visit prisons. They want to go on a day and time that is convenient to them,
that too a nearby jail, get a feel of it, take a few pictures, if possible, and
come back. They feel that walking a few steps in the jail premises once is
enough to understand all about jails. Interestingly, we often overlook the
prisons existing outside those walls, invisible jails that are far more difficult
to get away from. They function in several spheres that are beyond legal
boundaries. The duration of punishment there varies, as does the timing of
release. These prisons cannot be ignored either, because they remain in our
lives, sometimes forever. These prisons are of our own making. Prisons
outside the physical jail walls are of various types. We often become
prisoners of our ego and desires, and these prisons manifest in diverse
forms. Harboring a desire to be seen in the company of rich and powerful,

Jails. Such lock ups are more dangerous than the ones created by the state.
Let us look out for these. Freeing ourselves from them through
introspection and self awareness will be in one own interest and society.
The desire and action to contribute to making this universe more
harmonious is the ultimate music of life. External threats such as weather or
terrain which are outside a pilot control can cause an aircraft accident. But
pilot actions or decisions are often the deciding factor in such accidents. So,
the accident is often a pilot error accident. One type of pilot error accident
is controlled flight into terrain CFIT. The Mi 17 crash in Nilgiris hills that
killed General Bipin Rawat and twelve others was a CFIT. It was not the first
CFIT. Nor will it be the last. Prime Minister Morarji Desai Tu 124K crash at
Jorhat is the most noted CFIT of India. That crash 44 years ago happened
from a pilot induced situation. All five aircrew in the cockpit died. But
except for PK Thungon chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh who broke a leg,
the Prime Minister and all others aboard escaped with minor injuries. Most
CFIT accidents occur in the approach and landing phase of flight. Pilot error
is the most common cause of CFIT. Such error happens because of pilot loss

The aircraft come overhead the airfield. Weather forecast for Jorhat was
cloud base 150 meters and visibility two kilometers. In such weather, for TU
124 class aircraft, landing without ILS would be extremely challenging.
Weather forecast could be in error; and weather could change with time.
The actual weather at the time of approach and landing could therefore be
worse than forecast. Tu 124K range was 2,050 km at cruise altitude of eight
nine Km. Tu 124 was a fuel guzzler at low altitudes. So, once it descended
from cruise altitude, its range reduced drastically. Delhi to Jorhat air
distance is 1,685 km, which is close to the limit of Tu 124K range. Aircraft
was over Bagdogra, Siliguri, at about 0645 pm. At this point, the pilot had
the option to divert to Calcutta Kolkata which had an ILS and an electric
flare path. But he opted to continue to Jorhat where the weather was
marginal. Once he began the descent, he was committed to land at Jorhat.
He did not have fuel to divert. Acutely aware of the low fuel state, the pilot
used NDB and dead reckoning DR to make a direct approach to runway 04.
But when he came below clouds and sighted the flare path, he was so high
that he could not land. He therefore did a go around. He now did a timed
circuit to bring him on the approach path. This type of circuit is not

On a recent trip to Ahmedabad, while scratching our heads for sightseeing
options, the Indus Valley Hardpan civilization site of Lethal popped up. It
was a marvelous idea. Located approximately 90 km from Ahmedabad, this
4,500 year old port town is an absolute treasure. The literal meaning of
Lethal is place of the dead and the site was excavated by Dry SR Rae from
1955 to 1962, unearthing multiple structures. Chief among them is the
world oldest dock measuring 214@36 meters and showcasing a unique
water locking system. In fact, artifacts found at Lethal, such as bead
necklaces made of amethyst, onyx and other semi precious stones, indicate
that this Hardpan port town possibly had sea trade links with other ancient
civilisations of West Asia. Other notable structures at the site include a large
warehouse, a citadel, lower town, a bead making factory and a graveyard.
What is truly minded blowing is the quality of structural design and town
planning. The dockyard was constructed of fine bricks while the citadel
houses were built on 3 meter high platforms and provided with civic
amenities such as baths paved with burnt bricks, underground drains and a
well for potable water. Walking around this ancient site was truly
fascinating and one could not help but imagine how the ancient residents of
this port town lived. I was truly on ancient, hallowed ground, walking down
the same alleys and courtyards where our distant forefathers traversed
more than four millennia ago. Just the thought is enough to give one
Goosebumps and get the adrenalin rushing. Alas, such a historical and
archeologically important site is simply not getting the attention it deserves.
What should have been a major tourist attraction is actually a desolate sp

Research one can only speculate why that is the case. Is it a case of real
history uncomfortably challenging popular history Who knows But I would
strongly suggest that Gujarat government and its tourism department put in
time and money to promote and preserve Lethal. This is a national treasure
of immense value. And it can earn the state some serious tourism revenue.
And for all history and archaeology lovers, Lethal is definitely a must visit
next time you are in Ahmedabad. Two recent tragic incidents have once
again brought into public focus the longstanding issue of the relationship
between the defence services and domestic politics. This issue is not to be
confused with what are termed civil military relations. The latter refers to
institutional relationships, line of command and organisational protocol.
The former refers to the politicisation of matters military. Much has been
written over the years by qualified professionals on civil military relations.
Enough attention has not been paid to the politicisation of the services. The
appointment of a chief of defence staff CDS and his designation as
secretary, department of military affairs in the Union ministry of defence,
constituted a reset in what are defined as civil military relations. Legitimate
arguments have been put forward by knowledgeable commentators on the
pros and cons of the changes made. This is par for the policy course. Armed
forces are safeguarding our country from external threats .CDS is
coordinating three services which works very well. Army has been given
free hand and they are discharging ex employ services. The function of
police is also to be free without intervention from political power to
perform well. Amendments to the Representation

As human beings, we know that we have betrayed this trust. Climate
change is now upon us and we are reaping the fruits of our irresponsibility.
We will have to make drastic changes to save this planet. Restoration
means more than just working to cut down carbon emissions or scale down
our use of fossil fuels. There is a growing awareness that we need to have a
changed mindset to sustain our efforts to combat climate change. Among
other things, COP26 made one significant decision that provides us with a
sense of hope. For perhaps the first time a gathering of such magnitude and
importance was blessed with a contemplative presence . In seeking to
access the wisdom of spiritual traditions, there is the subtle admission that
the restoration of the outer ecology can only happen if the inner ecology of
the individual is restored in the first place. The occurrence of Christmas at
this time seems to be Godsend. In its essence, the celebration of the birth
of the Lord of the Universe is all about restoring what was lost. It may be
noted that in the Creation story the Garden of Eden is an ecologically
balanced phenomenon. Everything is in harmony. This balance between the
inner ecology of human beings and the outer ecology that exists outside of
us is characterised by non duality. It is the absence of the feelings of
separateness, desire and self consciousness. It is essentially a Un Self
Consciousness . The transitoriness of life is not disturbing; death is not a
fearsome event but woven into life itself. To the awareness that we, human
beings, share with the animal kingdom, we bring the quality of attention
and with it a sense of compassion. This is the key to ecological balance. Our
hope of restoration, therefore, lies in a r

In March 2020, the Reserve Bank of India issued guidelines that prohibit
merchants including all e commerce websites, streaming platforms and
payment aggregators such as Razor pay and Instamojo from storing
customer card information. The aim of this measure is to increase security
of stored card details while reducing the risk of data breaches. Globally, and
even in India, there have been several instances of financial data leaks over
the last few years. With digital transitions increasing manifold, the likely
consequences of a data leak both financial as well as in terms of trust can
be very real and damaging. Taking cognisance of this issue, RBI has been
progressively tightening regulations to ensure financial data security while
also limiting the number of actors who can store sensitive data. Results of
the exercise carried out by the J&K Delimitation Commission are in the
public domain even though the proposals haven t has been published in the
gazette. Jammu is to get six more seats in the proposed assembly and
Kashmir will be given one more. It will lead to a split of 43 seats for Jammu
and 47 to Kashmir in a 90 member assembly. Kashmir politicians, rarely on
the same page, are unanimous that their region got a raw deal. They still
have time to convince the Commission. The J&K Delimitation Commission is
a unique body, owing its existence to the provisions of the Jammu and
Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The Act set the terms for the
Commission. In addition to population, other aspects such as physical
features, communication and conveniences were to be considered in the
delimitation exercise. To put the extraordinary situation of J&K in
perspective, it important to consider Andhra Pradesh bifurcation. The 2014

Exercise is best avoided because of the danger of unintended

fears of Kashmir before it publishes its outcome. GoI warning to state
governments on Omicron includes keeping public health infrastructure in
operational readiness. But what about boosting healthcare workers
immunity against the virus. A study published in Lancet has just shown that
protection accorded by the AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield dips three
months after the second dose. Currently, healthcare workers numbering
around 70 lakh nearly 70% are those who took their second doses over six
months ago. If the highly infectious Omicron variant surges in India too,
many health workers can get infected. This, in turn, will reduce healthcare
capacity to treat patients. Fearing this, the Indian Medical Association and
some state governments have urged GoI to approve booster doses for
health workers. That a booster dose of Covishield, administered to nearly
90% Indians, is unlikely to work well for those already jabbed twice with it
has complicated the picture. Meanwhile, mix and match studies of
Covishield with Covovax have shown good results. WHO and EU regulators
have just cleared this SII manufactured vaccine for emergency use listing.
Also note that WHO recommends that those jabbed with inactivated virus
based vaccines, Coaxing, in India case, must also get booster list priority.
Bharat Biotech intra nasal vaccine is apparently the booster for those
jabbed with Coaxing but the timeline for its clearance is not clear. There no
question that GoI must move. Both Covovax and BB intra nasal vaccine must
receive focused official attention and all plans must be based on worst case

Festivities. Politicians are wreathed in loll. So here my annual take on Tar la
land. Jesus says: Men possibly think that I have come to throw peace upon
the world, and they do not know that I have come to throw divisions upon
the earth fire, sword, and war. Whenever a man like Jesus comes, the world
is immediately divided between those who are for him and those who are
against him. You cannot find a single person who is indifferent to Jesus.
Whenever a Jesus type is there, immediately the world is divided. A few are
for him and a few are against him, but nobody is indifferent. It is impossible
to be indifferent to Jesus. If you hear the word, if you look at Jesus,
immediately you are divided: you become a lover or you become a hater;
either you fall in line or you go against; either you follow him or you start
working against him. Happen. Because a man like Jesus is such a great
phenomenon and he is not of this world. He brings to this world something
from the beyond. Those who are afraid of the beyond immediately become
enemies; that is their way of protecting themselves. For those who have a
desire, a seed hidden somewhere, who have been searching and searching
and longing for the beyond, this man becomes charismatic, this man
becomes a magnetic force: They fall in his love. They have been waiting for
this man for many lives. The world is immediately divided: Either you are for
Christ, or you are against him. There is no other alternative; you cannot be
indifferent. You cannot say, I m not bothered. That is impossible, because a
person who can remain in the middle will become a Jesus himself. A person
who can stand in the middle, in neither love nor hate, will go beyond the
mind himself. He creates great turmoil, not

Because in you two things meet: This world the earth and heaven; they
meet in you. One part of you belongs to the mud, to the dirt; one part of
you belongs to the divine. You are a meeting point, and Jesus brought a
sword to cut you asunder, so the earth falls to the earth and the divine
enters the divine. When crises appear, heroes rise. These heroes come from
all genders, regions, special disability groups and ages. This fact is precisely
true for India, as much as it is for the rest of the world. The Covid 19 crisis
has swept through the world like a Tsunami. All aspects of our lives have
been disrupted, including health, education and livelihoods. While this
catastrophic black swan event has impacted all age groups, young people,
especially the age 10 24, have been affected the most. Apart from the
effects of the virus, young people across the globe have been facing
physical, mental and emotional trauma during the past 17+ months.
Compounding this is the social, educational and economic insecurity that
the lockdowns and curfews brought about. The impact has been manifold.
Young people are experiencing an emotional tragedy, and they are at high
risk of neglect, abuse, distress and other mental health issues and
exploitation. Access to essential health, social, protection and education
services is constrained by lockdowns. Young people are losing family,
caregivers, leaving them without proper care. There has been an enormous
learning loss as schools & colleges are shut across the country. 247 million
children and young people are not able to access learning in school at all
levels. In addition, many teachers have lost lives due to COVID 19. Remote
learning is also disrupted in several states. Even before this second w

The youth and we must understand that young people are the innovators,
creators, builders, and leaders of the future. What is needed is a facilitator
eco system in which young people can access the tools required to not only
cope with the present but also transform the future as we all learn to
grapple with the uncertainties and vulnerabilities that is being experienced.
Our world is home to 1.8 billion+ young people between the ages of 10 and
24, the largest generation of young people in the history of the world. With
more than 300 million+ 10 24 year olds, India has the world largest youth
population and will continue to hold this until the next 20 years. Never have
there been so many young people in any country at the same time. Never
again is there likely to be such potential for economic and social progress.
Governments, the Private Sector, Civil Society and Media must focus on the
potential of young people and the role they will play in post pandemic
recovery and shaping the future of our world. We must realize the
importance of building an ecosystem for young people in terms of
education, 21st century skills, career guidance and economic opportunities.
We must begin to explore alternate for benefit economic models that are
shaped by the youth with the intent of ensuring private gains while
resulting in public good. Let us move to what action is needed to prepare
our young people to be responsible adults, to skill them for jobs that are yet
to be created, technologies not yet invented, and solve problems not yet
anticipated. To help them face and navigate through such uncertainty, we
need to equip our young people with such essential life and employability
skills as collaboration, problem solving, effective communi

Arguably, the bull market of 2021 is the same one that started in 2009, with
one big change. Retail investors, who sat on the sidelines for so many years,
rushed in after the pandemic induced flash crash last year and have since
been buying every dip with mounting enthusiasm. They represent not only
a new cohort of investors but a new voting bloc; increasing the risk of
populist backlash should one of the dips turn into another bear market.
Remember that policymakers played a big role in starting this craze. Flush
with government support cheese and fresh liquidity from central banks,
new investors began pouring part of their income into markets, helping to
turbocharge the bull run into Following various Western vaccine regulators
approving boosters, WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on
Immunization SAGE has recognised a modest to minimal reduction of
vaccine protection against severe disease six months after second dose, and
called for targeted administration of boosters. Recall that India had
followed WHO recommendations on vaccinating healthcare providers and
first responders like frontline workers before moving to senior citizens and
others. In the wake of WHICH nuanced advice on prioritizing boosters, go
must t wait any longer. A booster dose for high exposure groups like
healthcare workers and high vulnerability groups like senior citizens and
those with comorbidities ahead of a feared third wave would be a rational
and science driven approach. AstraZeneca has said that a new Oxford study,
yet to be published in a peer reviewed medical journal, suggests that a
three dose course of its vaccine Covishield maintains neutralising antibody
levels against Omicron. Earlier, there were fears that a viral vector vaccin

Growing reliance on mRNA vaccines, which are unavailable in India, Go
must invest in local research on booster and mix and match trials. With
increasing reports of people, including health workers, securing third doses
on the sly, go must delay a clearly defined booster policy. Uncertainty
arising from both global factors and the trajectory of the pandemic
influenced RBI monetary policy committee MPC meeting this month. MPC
minutes point to the growing complexity in economic policy making and the
need for synchronization of monetary and fiscal policies to insulate the
economy from uncertainty and also provide policy support to an
underperforming economy. Consequently, there unanimity in the
committee that the policy interest rate needs to be kept at the current 4%.
A sharp rise in inflation across many countries is the root cause for
uncertainty stemming from global factors. This is expected to play out in
India too, with RBI projecting average inflation in the January March quarter
to be around 5.7%, a level above the forecast of 5.3% for 2021 22. Supply
disruptions as economies normalize and a rise in commodity prices,
especially crude; pose the biggest challenge in India inflation scenario. RBI
challenge in this scenario is that while it has to deal with both domestic
inflation and the possible turbulence in financial markets as major central
banks adjust their policies, it also has to provide monetary support to
economic revival. The MPC minutes show the committee is not yet
convinced that the revival seen in the July September quarter is durable.
The economic scenario calls for close coordination between monetary and
fiscal authorities. So far, India approach has been to let monetary policy

Arrangement that suited India early political masters who faced the wrong

to be put in its rightful place lest it emerged as an alternate power center in
Indian politics. For me, and many like me scattered all over the world,
Christmas will always be spelt Calcutta. The Calcutta I knew and loved
embodied the spirit of the Yuletide season which, like the mellow December
sunlight, seemed to seep into the houses and streets so that the city
appeared to glow with a borrowed radiance. From the mazy lanes behind
Ripon Street and Elliot Road rose an aroma of cakes, each made to an Anglo
Indian recipe as prized as a family heirloom, given to be baked by Muslim

the gift really depends on the call of the giving heart or the hour of need of
the receiver. The best gift is one which has the intention of purity behind it.
That would show the state of joy or peace of the receiver, which matters
most. A cup of cool water to a thirsty man in a desert is more precious than
gifts of jewels or millions of dollars to a wealthy man. Now, how do we
evaluate a gift the capacity of the giver is more relevant than the material
value of the gift. Saints like Sheri Ram Chandra of Shahjahanpur, Babuji,

billionaires. Gift it can only be love! The

forgiving the best gift miraculously, it turns out to be a double gift; it works
for the giver and receiver. It has the potential to usher in a new heaven on
earth by saving the world from hatred. Babuji Maharaja, the founder of the

gratitude for the lessons learnt, perhaps that is the greatest in gift giving.
However, only the one who has received divine grace can do it easily. The
Divine grace is the highest gift. It can happen in the presence of a divinized
personality and not because one is deserving, meritorious or has earned it.
While planting a sapling today is a splendid gift to future generations and
there are other noble ways to give, like contributing to your favorite

However, it is surprising that health bars and machines accounted for a

health snack categories, are still languishing at INR 97 core and INR 150

innovations such as popped potato chips with less fat, none refined sugar

have caught consumer attention instead. These are not termed healthy but
better for you alternatives, which are likely to attract massive consumer
acceptance. However, brands need to commit themselves to serious
product innovation and food technology for this to happen. After all,
popcorn continued to grow as a category at an estimated revenue of nearly
INR 1000 core without much hype and hoopla. And this goes to show that
there is a clear opportunity to build a healthy snacking category as long as
consumer taste is respected. While clearly, the time is over for unhealthy
mass produced snacks, for brands to see massive growth of healthy
snacking, consumers preference for taste needs paramount importance.
Food brands need to understand that health bars, immunity balls, and

What is sacrilege for one may appear a frivolous misdemeanor for the
other; or what is righteous outrage for one is a hissy fit for the other. Yet
there are believers everywhere and when there is faith there is always a
symbol that is held aloft. Recent reports on the sacrilege in the Golden
Temple urges one to tread carefully as you cannot take a foghorn to court,
nor leave it behind. The dilemma is real. Allahabad high court observation
on whether UP polls should be deferred and an IIT Kanpur study forecasting
an Omicron peak in early February when elections are also due in Punjab,
Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur gives India three election commissioners
much to mull over. By now, Election Commission has the experience of
conducting last year Bihar and this summer five state assembly elections
amid the Covid pandemic. But this also came with flak from courts over
failure to enforce its own social distancing norms at election rallies. Amid
India frenzied enthusiasm for elections, playing referee to political parties,
big nets and their grassroots functionaries is an unenviable task. In
desperation EC had even banned rallies at the far end of the unnecessarily
long winded Bengal elections as Covid infections surged. No party really
took to virtual rallies after making tepid starts. But India growing
smartphone base expected to touch 83 cores in 2022 remains an
opportunity that most parties are exploiting enough, especially given
infection concerns. The Bengal nightmare demands that EC must keep all its
options open in view of the fluid situation. If needed, it must even consider
deferring elections if a third wave gains pace. Elections, while absolutely
necessary for democracy, can surely wait a bit to tide over a public hea

Was to plead on behalf of the people. Jesus comes across as one not only to
represent God to humankind but also to represent humanity before a holy
god. The Bible underscores this role of the Messiah that was born for we do
not have a high priest who is unable to empathies with our weaknesses, but
we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did
not sin. Truly, a pleading priest. The third gift that was offered to the baby
was myrrh, which is also a sap like substance taken from certain trees, has
medicinal value and is also used in embalming. Myrrh, symbolises death.
Jesus was introduced at the start of his public ministry as a lamb who would
take away the sin of the world . From Abraham to the Passover in Egypt,
these Jews had sacrificed a blemish less lamb for forgiveness. The blood of a
lamb was only a shadow of the ultimate sacrifice that God Himself would
offer. Gandhi once observed Jesus, a man who was completely innocent,
offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies
and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. As the adage
goes what you are is God gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.
This Christmas season, no matter who you are, by His grace, you could be a
gift to someone else. Let make sure the gift goes on. AstaGuru will host its

move close to the end of 2021, here are a few ideas that can help us all
make the best out of our days ahead. Many friends might have lost hope for
resolutions after failing to achieve those in their past. Here is an excellent
opportunity for us to implement these 4 ideas in 2022 and launch ourselves
on the happiness mode. We all know what eyesight is all about. But human
eyes come with a limitation those can see only what is physically present in
this universe. There is a limit to the maximum distance at which we can see
things. Well, there is a potent tool given to each one of us by God. This is
called Mind Sight an ability to visualize future manifestation. This is a
powerful technique applied by almost all winners in this universe. In simple
words, Mind Sight is the ability to see our future goals through the bridge of
time in the present tense format. To do so, one must learn the art of
meditation. The best way to add power to your mindsight is to spend just 20
minutes in the peaceful world of meditation. Write down your dreams and
desires. Flag a timeline for all your goals. Bifurcate those into short terms
and long term targets. Now start meditation. Mentally transport yourself
into an imaginary world of the future, where your aspirations have
manifested. Do this exercise every day for 1

India urbanization is expected to accelerate in the coming decades.
According to urban population projections, every second individual in India
will be living in a city or a town by 2050, implying an urban population of
about. As urbanisation is an inevitable outcome of future economic growth,
it is important to ask Can Indian cities handle such a massive transition over
a relatively short period of time. The failure to plan for such transformations
often creates pockets of social, economic, and ecological deprivation in
cities. This urban distress takes many intersecting forms such as poor
quality housing, inadequate infrastructure, poverty, and pollution, which
affect the development of the city as a whole. In developing countries like
India, two intersecting factors can explain urban distress. The first is
increasing socio economic vulnerabilities among city dwellers, which are a
result of economic inequality, lack of universal access to basic amenities,
lack of social security, the threat of climate change related disasters, among
other reasons. This is compounded by a second factor, which is the limited
capacity of local bodies to adapt to emerging issues in both small and large
urban centers. Therefore, successful progress towards he 11 on sustainable
cities and communities and the requires deep urban governance reforms in
India. Successfully addressing urban distress through governance reforms
first requires acknowledging that it plays out differently in cities of different
sizes. Take for instance Chennai, a megacity in Tamil Nadu with a population
of more than 7 million, and Sitamarhi, a small town in Bihar with a little over
100,000 inhabitants. Both cities doubled their population between 1961
and 1981. And al

Flooding. In spite of these differences, policies and plans to tackle urban
distress are often built around the needs and requirements of metropolitan
cities. As a result, smaller towns and cities non million plus statutory towns
where 43 percent of India urban population lives are overlooked. 1 This
means that smaller towns and cities are often unable to access adequate
resources, thus limiting their ability to upgrade and expand urban
infrastructure as they grow. Additionally, the lack of technical knowledge
and organizational capacities among the administration in small towns is a
bottleneck for optimal utilisation of already scarce resources. This hinders a
city ability to attract investments, which in turn affects the living conditions
for a majority of its population. Across India, villages are urbanising rapidly.
These rural areas that have urban characteristics such as a minimum
population of 5,000, at least 75 percent of the male main working
population in the town engaged in nonagricultural activities, and a
population density of at least 400 persons per square kilometre are being
reclassified as census towns. According to the 2011 Census, nearly 15
percent of the country urban population lives in census towns. However,
despite these areas being functionally urban, they continue to be governed
as rural areas rather than municipalities by Panchayati. This raises a
question: How should we address urban problems relating to urban
infrastructure such as streets, water, electricity, and waste management in
towns governed by rural systems Using a rural development and
governance framework for census towns can heighten distress and limit
their access to schemes and finances available to urban areas. This can

In a post pandemic world. I distinctly remember sitting on the banks of the
Ganges and watching the Ganga dolphins surface up and go down, in my
home town Patna. This was the mid nineties, and I was only beginning to
appreciate the wonders that Mother Nature has so freely provided us. And
yet, the sight of the serene river flowing by would leave me spell bound.
Rivers are more than flowing water bodies for us. They are a source of art,
literature, poetry as well as reverence. They are integral to our cultural
identity. Needless to say, by providing us with water to drink and irrigate
our farms, they are a source of life itself. Rivers enrich our planet with the
ecosystem they support. Freshwater aquatic life is a world in itself. The
rivers drain about three fourths of the land surface of earth. They make
possible the biotic interactions among plants, animals and micro organisms,
as also abiotic physical and chemical interactions. The flow of water in the
rivers of our country is unidirectional the river carries water from its source
to its destination which can either be another river or the ocean and seas.
The organisms that live in the rivers, such as fishes and reptiles, have
adapted to live in these conditions. Think of the unique life forms that this
system sustains, for example, the hila fish, which must swim upstream from
the oceans to the Ganges to spawn. For a moment, imagine what life would
be like without rivers. This will be a bleak and grim world, with considerably
less life figuratively as well as literally. It will also be a world of droughts and
famines. Thankfully we don t have to live in such a world. But the threat is
real. There have been news reports of big cities staring at day zero a day
when they

They have access to. The information can pertain to cultural, social,
ecological, religious and other aspects of the rivers. The information is
collected on a mobile application Nadir koi Jana that was launched by our
education minister Sheri Dharmendra Prada on 25 July 2021. The
competition will also lead to creation of a database about the various facets
of our rivers, some of which may be novel. Students of colleges in Delhi
have been enthusiastic participants in this competition. My interaction with
them reveals their excitement as they discover new facts about their rivers.
These interactions also take me back to my younger days in Patna, and
particularly chatty puja celebrations. My entire family would visit the Ghats
to perform puja to the setting and the rising sun by offering argh in the
Ganges. One hopes our future generations will also get to experience the
great joys that our rivers bring to us. As India continues to fight Covid 19
and Omicron, and people continue to fear venturing out, digital initiatives in
both advertising and marketing will become more prevalent in 2022.
According to the most recent statistics, there are around 3.78 billion social
media users globally. The number of such users is expected to climb again
next year. Social media trends will rule the advertising and brand strategies
in the coming year. Marketing and business will become more varied,
inclusive, and responsive to real client requirements in the future. While AI
and data driven marketing will continue to advance, the primary focus will
remain on people rather than technology. Traditional in person events and
promotions have given way to virtual space in brand awareness initiatives.
We live in a world of social media marketing,

Companies will be able to benefit from new features which Meta will
introduce. With the help of new emerging social media trends, they will be
able to expand their product reach and visibility. Influencer marketing is
expected to reach $13.8 billion in 2021, with growth expected to continue in
2022. Influencer marketing efforts add a personal touch to the product,
making it more relevant to the user. Thus, B2B brands will continue to
embrace influencers in light of current trends. In the digital world, LinkedIn
is still a growing star. The company just launched a Hindi version to cater to
the 600 million Hindi speakers throughout the world. With 82 million
members in a global community of 800 million, India is a key market for
LinkedIn growth and the second largest market in terms of members after
the United States. Since the pandemic, India member base has expanded by
more than 20 million 15 percent year over year, and participation and talks
on the platform have increased dramatically. This will continue to be a great
way for brands to reach out to their target demographic. Building brand
recognition may require some trial and error, but having a dedicated
awareness plan will surely help in your brand visibility. By following the
latest social media trends, you may position yourself to become a brand
that stands out in the eyes of your customers. India vaccination drive is

Areas and has currently been granted permission to operate in Manipur,

expanded to hilly states and other islands across the country to speed up
vaccination. Globally, UNICEF is employing methods like running dedicated
chartered flights, and multi stop chartered flights, with support from its
partners, to address vaccine shortage, particularly in countries in West and
Central Africa. Another area where new approaches are required is in
dispelling vaccine hesitancy. I would like to take the example of civil society
organizations like Smile Foundation to detail this point. Through initiatives
like Health Cannot Wait, they have mobilized teams of dedicated
vaccination counselors who are helping people by allaying concerns
pertaining to vaccination, and by encouraging health seeking behavior. The
task of disproving rumors, half truths, and lies around vaccines is a
challenge of mammoth proportions, especially given India size, diversity,
and cultural complexities. Efforts in this direction must therefore be
encouraged and emboldened, empowered. Behavior science would also
play a great role in nudging people towards vaccination. Mass
communication strategists would do well to be informed by behavior
science to create personalized messages to address doubts, fear, and
lethargy. Researchers at the Asoka University Centre for Social and Behavior
Change have formulated suggestions on how officials in the Uttar Pradesh
government could nudge people to get vaccinated. They have studied
decision making and human actions to try and address lethargy and fear
among the partially vaccinated. Mass communication strategies to improve
second dose uptake should emphasize the mos

Even in the New Year, will there be fear or will the pandemic descend the
slope, as we fervently hope Will vaccines win the game, even if variants don
t stay the same or will we still need to seek safety behind a mask, as taming
the wily virus is no easy task. I have been posed these questions, which are
on everyone mind. I will start with the disclaimer that uncertain elements of
virus behavior and inconsistent elements of human response dim the
images on my crystal ball. However, science provides a light to navigate
through the thickets of available facts and posit a plausible path that the
pandemic may take during 2022. Prime Minister Namenda Mode Christmas
Day announcement on boosters and children vaccination was welcome, but
much more detail is needed to get a proper idea of how India third dose
programmer will play out. The regulator has authorised two vaccines for
children and Bharat Biotech Covaxin. In addition, three more vaccines are in
the clinical trials stage in India for use in children jabs. The regulator had
earlier given permission to BB and Biological E to conduct clinical trials for
boosters. India has other options across the spectrum of vaccine technology
platforms. Covovax, a protein sub unit vaccine manufactured by Serum,
received WHO authorisation on December 17. Two other vaccines in the
regulatory pipeline are BB intra nasal vaccine and Genova mRNA vaccine.
But knotty questions remain. Are we to assume that given supply timelines
of new vaccines, and the January 10 start of the booster programmer,
adults will initially receive the same vaccine they were double dosed with as
the third shot How efficacious will that booster be This is all the more
important because medical professionals, the most

Not only be rapidly executed, it should have also been based on expert
reviewed and publicly available scientific conclusions. While one must wait
for GoI details on boosters, one suspects key questions will not go away
even after the fuller programmer is announced. Just days after Bharatiya
Kisan Union Charuni launched a political party to contest the upcoming
assembly elections in Punjab, another 22 farmer groups have followed suit
to launch their own political front. The new Sanyukt Samaj Morcha is led by
senior farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal, and its electoral debut is bound
to further fragment the crowded field in Punjab. For decades a two horse or
a two and a half horse race, Punjab politics today hosts multiple actors
pulling in different directions. Actually, at the height of the farmer agitation
over the summer, the governing Congress was in the driver seat looking to
reap the benefits of the anti Centre mood that had singed BJP and Akali Dal.
But Navjot Singh Sidhu effectively sabotaged that advantage, and
Amarinder Singh replacement, Charanjit Singh Channi, also faces the Sidhu
problem. Meanwhile, AAP, which had surprisingly emerged as the main
opposition party in the 2017 polls, is also in disarray. It was flirting with
farmer union leaders in the hope of riding sentiments in rural Punjab. But
with some of the unions taking the political plunge themselves, AAP is likely
to be restricted to urban pockets sans a pan Punjab face. The unknown
quantity, however, is Amarinder new Punjab Lok Congress and its expected
alliance with BJP. Should the tie up materialise, it could at the least play

not separate entities but one. This couplet of Ghalib serves as a template
for modern existential philosophy and solipsism. Like Allama Iqbal, Ghalib
also claimed to think in Persian. Poets with a Persian backdrop have
invariably been influenced by the mystical poetry and ideas of the Sufis. At
the same time, it a known fact that Persian mysticism borrowed heavily
from the Upanishads and Vedanta. Ghalib underlined that merging

As the year draws to an end, one can risk a little speculation about what we
can expect from politics in India in 2022. As its national government crosses
the midterm point, BJP will fight the opposition in seven state elections.
Uttar Pradesh, of course, will be the most keenly watched election. Here,
BJP challenge is not so much to defeat a divided opposition but to maintain
the dominance it achieved in 2017. Five years ago, BJP swept the state,
winning 77% of the seats in a victory that helped forge its image of electoral
invincibility in the Hindi belt. Since then, BJP has lost more state elections
than it has won, and it needs to retain its hold over the heartland state if it
wants to approach the 2024 general election in a strong position. This
election will also be an important stepping stone for UP chief minister prime
ministerial ambitions, raising the stakes further. Two days after the
announcement that beginning January India will embark on a booster
vaccine programmer and also extend coverage to children, details are not
yet in the public domain. These points to an area speedy, systematic
research where India can do far better. South Africa quick identification of
Omicron, earlier and similarly excellent efforts by scientists in the UK, the
many studies conducted in the US, Europe and Israel are all examples of
government and science responding to the pandemic and, this is equally
important, sharing the findings so that all concerned can take informed
decisions. The basic motivation for such work is always domestic public
health responses are tailored to local contexts. But India, one of the few
countries that have developed its own Covid vaccine, has been a virtual non

Have already been administered it, what is the scientific basis for such a
decision? Fighting a pandemic means using every resource possible. India
scientific community has been underutilized. And government
encouragement for independent studies has been virtually absent. Around
10 days have passed since a so called religious enclave in Hardwar
challenged constitutionally guaranteed religious freedoms as well the rule
of law. But, in a country where UAPA is applied by cops for the most trivial
actions and critical posts on political leaders can lead to arrest, neither has
the Uttarakhand police deemed such outrageous statements fit for arrest,
and nor has governing BJP responded. Even Congress Nehru Gandhi has
made anodyne statements. The Dharma Sensed saw participants taking an
oath to fight, die and kill to make this country into Hindu rostra, called for
every Hindu to bear arms to finish off their non Hindus population, and for a
Myanmar style safari abhiyaan, sanitation drive. Some will argue this is a
fringe, not worthy of taking seriously. To is the main point of that the
response should be this is a democratic, secular country and politicians
cannot ignore calls for community cleansing by a group claiming to
represent the majority. The other point is that the Sensed chilling rhetoric
should be read with reports of dozens of disturbing incidents across the
country. To name just a recent few: regular obstruction of Friday names in
Gurgaon, disrupted Christmas celebrations from Assam to Karnataka,
forcibly shutting a shop that carried the word Say in its name and was run
by a Muslim. One thing common in most such incidents is the apparent
unwillingness of police and many politicians to take these groups on. That

That food down my throat. It not that I don t eat or that I don t eat too
much or that I don t eat the wrong things, I definitely do, but any
consumption of food that leads to pleasure is accompanied by debilitating
guilt, like I just digested away a few hours of my lifespan. However, when
other people do it, I no longer feel that anxiety, and here the thing,
sometimes I can even taste what they are having, the visuals triggering
memory centers of the brain, providing a trickle of dopamine, the best that I
can do under the circumstances. The essence of being human is illustrated
beautifully through an Ubuntu proverb in Zulu culture, and this was often
recalled by Nobel peace prize awardee and archbishop, Desmond Tutu: I am
a person through other people. My humanity is tied to yours. He would
explain it as follows: One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu the
essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you
can exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our
interconnectedness. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just
individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and
what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is
for the whole of humanity. That is, the butterfly effect is as true among
peoples of the world as it is true in the intricate web of nature, wherein all
beings, animate and inanimate, are closely interconnected. Jacob
Mugumbate, University of Wollongong, and Andrew Nyanguru, University
of Zimbabwe, sum up Ubuntu philosophy as I am because of who we all are.
Such an attitude would likely lead us to the essence of the summon bonus
philosophy that denotes the fundamental principle on which some system
of ethics is based,

Ubuntu provides one with a strong sense of community to override
divisions and heal the scarred collective psyche, pointed out Tutu. What we
are as individuals is the sum of all that went before us; of all that we
experience now and of all that could possibly happen in the future. A
beautiful Ubuntu practice Tutu often related, involves community members
sitting around a person who has committed wrong, and speak of all the
good that person has done, focusing on all his positive qualities, for a few
days in a row, in a sort of purification, a revelatory ritual. The belief is that
all of us are good, but we do sometimes make mistakes, which is really a cry
for help. The ritual is intended to help the person reconnect with this true
nature in the belief that unity and affirmation have more power to change
behavior than shame and punishment. The recent inaugural of Kasha

Be the duty of each of us, irrespective of our ideologies, to unite and be
inspired to strive together for the highest, by working selflessly for national

must mention his gore, and thus, a Hindu lineage is a must. In reality, it is
said, converts to Hindu faith, either mention the gore of their ancestors, or
adopt the gore of their guru, or the person officiating the gear wasp. Most
Indians, including Hindu converts to Islam and Christianity, are said to know
the gore of their ancestors. It is said to be a common observation, that
many converted Muslims, Christians still use it as a part of their name. It is
pertinent to mention that, another Siddhi proponent, Swami Vedananda
Tithe, also earned the open praise of Ambedkar. Vedananda authored a
book, Rashtraraksha key Vedic Saehan Vedic Means for National Security, in
which he proposed that India should adopt as its religion, the gospel
preached by the Vedas. Ambedkar, who gave a preface for the book, wrote.
I do not know that the book will become the gospel of new India. But I can
say that the book is not merely a wonderful collection of statements drawn
from the religious books of the ancient Aryans, but it brings out in a striking
manner, the vigor of thought and action which prevailed among the ancient
Aryans. What the book shows is that, there is nothing in it of that pessimism
among the ancient Aryans which dominates the modern Hindus. The
orthodox groups opposing the home coming of those, who were converted
to Muslim or Christian faith, by force, or through allurement a century ago,
have today been relegated to a fringe & there seems visibly, a new

it confronts today can be seen in the FIR filed against one of Mooch children

matter how politically volatile such accusations have become, they cannot
be the touchstone for funding of important services, certainly not for axing

The International Monetary Fund has projected India GDP growth at 9.5 in
2021 and 8.5 in 2022, making it the fastest growing economy in the world.
Deepak Parekh of HDFC, doyen of the private sector, says he is more
optimistic than he has been for 50 years. IMF believes fast growth in 2021 is
not a one off recovery from Covid, and India is bouncing back to miracle
growth status after having gone downhill from 8.3 in 2016 17 to 4.2 in 2019

growth may be no more than 5. I am more optimistic but see many
challenges that could derail growth. The civil aviation ministry advisory,
inspired by a suggestion from ICCR, that domestic airlines and airports play
Indian music is exactly what the industry did need. Sure, there is nothing
wrong with playing Indian music on flights or at airports. And it is perhaps
true that airlines and airports of other nations often play local origin music.
But that not the point. Other nations, at least those that are democratic and
allow private enterprise a free hand to run their business, don issue
advisories to private aviation players on what music they should play. That
this is not an order from the ministry but a request is little comfort. What

airlines and airports may feel compliance is wiser and that would set a

Sauna Brahman also needs some material to create the universe just as the

So then has Brahman also obtained the material from someone else The

Tiger and if you are double lucky, the tiger will come close to your jeep,
even kill a harmless dog and walk away. And then, there are times when the
wild cat actually walks out of the forest. It happened some weeks ago. A
few miles outside the park at a popular cafe, a tigress walked in the dead of
the night to reclaim her kill, an antelope. The owner of the Honk Cafe, a
lovely eatery which runs on land owned by Ranthambhore tiger god Fatah

bottom line: You never get a guarantee to see the tigers in a forest. The big
cats surface only if they want. It is their home, their land. While
inaugurating a slew of border infrastructure projects, defence minister
Rajah Singh has said that the possibility of any kind of conflict can be ruled
out in the current uncertain environment. Singh was referring to the
ongoing LAC standoff with China that began last year. He is right in his
assessment that India should be prepared for any conflict scenario because
the political situation in China will remain sensitive till the 20th Chinese
Communist Party CCP Congress next. And given the internal machinations of
the CCP with President Xi Jinxing trying to secure a historic third term, more
adverse events at the India China border cannot be ruled out. While shoring
up the country defence capabilities and border infrastructure is vital,
meeting the China challenge it is actually the China Pakistan challenge given
Islamabad belligerence too also requires an all of government and society
approach. And for this it is necessary to ensure that politics does become a
national security liability. With

Registry, the exact incidence of CKD in India is not clear, but studies
estimate that the number of new patients diagnosed with End Stage Kidney
Disease ESKD requiring dialysis or transplantation is over 100,000 per year.
Inequality in the access to health care between urban and rural populations,
poverty, and undulation probably underestimates the actual burden of
kidney diseases in our country. Causes in India Diabetes and Hypertension
are the most common causes of kidney disease in India in both men and
women. There is some difference in gender predisposition to renal disease.
Females are more susceptible to certain autoimmune diseases which affect
the kidneys like Systemic Lupus Erythematous, urinary tract infections. A
newer entity Cod CKD unknown has recently been introduced which is
found in hot climates, under hydration and tropical regions underlying the
importance of adequate water intake. Tropical diseases like malaria,
diarrhea, snake bites, poisonings also are commoner in India predisposing
to acute kidney injury. Complications of kidney disease Chronic kidney
disease can negatively impact the general wellbeing. Patients often
demonstrate symptoms of lethargy, pain, depression, cognitive impairment,
lack of sleep and appetite. They may complain of decrease urine output,
swelling of the body, decrease in sexual arousal and infertility. There will
have a fall in their hemoglobin levels, abnormalities in the calcium,
phosphorous and uric acid parameters. Pregnancy in a CKD patient carries a
high risk of neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality, decrease in
fetal weight, prematurity, low birth weight, fetal distress and also increases
the chances of CKD in the offspring. Heart problems like heart failure, a

More often as kidney donors than fathers or husbands. This evident gender
inequality is likely due to social, educational, and psychological factors.
Women are lesser educated than males in this country and therefore tend
to be more financially dependent on men. Concluding, CKD is a problem of
epidemic proportions in India. There is an increasing diabetes burden,
hypertension, and growing elderly population which will expand the CKD
subgroup even further. Managing this patient population of CKD even with
better organization of RRT will be difficult. It will require a lot of data and
professional lobbying with various policymakers, the Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare MOHFW, and the Government of India. There is an annual
World Kidney Day campaign which allows us to assess where we are today
with kidney health across the globe. The 2021 was declared as the year of
Living Well with Kidney Disease. It was celebrated on 11th March 2021. It
aims to increase education and awareness about effective symptom
management and patient empowerment, with the goal of encouraging life
participation. Patients with kidney disease including dialysis and post
transplantation as well as their care partners should also feel supported,
especially during pandemics and other challenging periods, by the
concerted efforts of kidney care communities. Good morning, ladies and
gentlemen. Or rather, in keeping with these politically correct times, gender
neutral entities. Welcome to this inaugural meeting of OMG. As you are all
aware, 2021 is coming to its conclusion with the Coronavirus springing
another surprise on the global community by producing yet another variant

Governments have other crucial jobs. Only 12 lakh tests were conducted
nationally on December 29, against an average of 11 lakh daily tests in early
December. This, when Omicron is surging. The Centre suggestion of dual RT
PCR testing on samples first with the regular kit, which if positive, should be
followed with an S gene drop testing kit will help better gauge the Omicron
spread and also conserve the currently scarce S gene drop test kits. But are
states following through on this, that the question. India Omicron number
of around 1,000 is most probably a huge undercount, limited by our ability
to do genomic sequencing. So, dual RT PCR is vital. Alongside detected
Covid cases, tracking and publishing hospitalisation data must start
immediately. Hospitalisation data like ICU bed occupancy in the early days
of a wave will help make informed decisions on potential stress points for
the healthcare system. It will also avoid unnecessarily disruptive curbs on
livelihoods and economic activities, should Omicron not cause overrunning
of health systems. India can afford a government failure like we saw during
the second wave. A healthy relationship between the judiciary and media,
two of the four pillars of democracy, is logically necessary for the health of
democracy. But what precisely does health mean in this context speaking at

Supreme Court must decriminalise what is termed as candalising the court.
This provision does sit well in a democracy. In my view schizophrenic is too
strong a word. I mean there is no anomaly in the view of citizens. Different
citizens have different views; obviously, as part of democracy, depending on
context of policies announced by the government in power, which is as it
should be in a popular democracy. It not that there is one issue on which
the same person differs on two points. So it not schizophrenic. In India,
democracy is very strong. And there will be difference of views. That what
democracy is about. So as 2021 chugs off, is there a light at the end of the
muddle No, but hope springs eternal even in the human beast. So here
what we should junk carry forward? Spoiler alert: plus CA change always
includes a minus of expectations. A New Year is the time when a lot of
people stumble upon the realization, Oh! Another year has gone by! For a
few seconds or minutes, we wonder about the current of time that flows by
and then again get busy or lost in the world outside. The funny thing is that
this happens nearly every year. If we go deeper into these moments of
wonder, we realize that there is an aspect of us that is a witness to all the
events of time. This witness inside us is unchanging and it is from here that
we observe all the change that time brings. All the events in life until this
moment appear like a dream. Wisdom is becoming aware of this dream like
nature of life even as it is unfolding now. Knowing this brings tremendous
strength from within and you do not get shaken by events and
circumstances. At the same time, events have their own place in life. We
need to learn from them and keep moving. Many days

Nurtured by meditation. When you come closer to the Self, your action
becomes powerful in the world and right action in the world brings you
closer to the Self. The year that is going by has taught us many lessons;
what we should be doing and what we should not be doing. Every pain that
we went through brought us some depth, and all the joy and pleasure gave
us a new vision of life and hope for the future. The year gone by saw plenty
of rainy days. This New Year let there be sunshine both in our lives and in
society. Let us all have a determination to create a violence free, stress free
society. Let us resolve to be unshakable within and move towards a better
world. Time changes people but there are people who change the time.
May you be one of them? Happy New Year. The digital payments sector in
India has undergone exponential progress over the past few years. Driven

over 55% in the last five years, according to the RBI. Policy moves such as
demonetisation, as well as the unique scenario created by the Covid 19
pandemic, have sped up this transition, along with growing foreign direct
investment and the strong underlying framework of UPI. Online businesses,
consumers, and banking institutions are increasingly relying on digital
payments due to their convenience, reliability, and money tracking
capabilities. In 2020, the transaction volume share in India stood at 15.6
percent and 22.9 percent for instant payments and other electronic
payments respectively. The future looks optimistic for the sector. It is
predicted that by 2022, the Indian digital payments industry will reach $700

Levels of digital literacy, allowing them to set up services and payment
cycles by seeking out help from other individuals at a singular point in time.
Having said this, recent regulations around e mandates have resulted in
industry unease and an element of regulatory uncertainty. In August 2019,
the RBI had issued a new framework for processing e mandates on recurring
online transactions, encompassing cards and wallets, but subsequently, in
January 2020, these were extended to cover UPI transactions as well. Earlier
this year, while the RBI announced an extension of the deadline for
adhering to new guidelines one mandate transactions to 30th September,
there have been concerns put forth about unpreparedness to meet these
guidelines in time. The new guidelines require the use of Additional Factor
Authentication AFA during registration, modification, and revocation of e
mandates. Additional requirements include the need for an online facility
for cardholders to withdraw any e mandate at any point in time, audit trail
related requirements, and for banks to send pre debit notifications with an
option for customers to opt out of that mandate. As has been underlined
earlier, e mandates have helped drive forward a positive shift in the digital
economy by enhancing transactions between businesses and consumers.
The new guidelines proposed by the RBI have not emerged from a vacuum
and have been developed to address security concerns faced by consumers
while utilising recurring online payments. These regulations aim to integrate
banks, customers, and merchants onto a common platform, improving data
security and integrating consent mechanisms. However, it is important for
the RBI to keep in mind the need to make this integration s
