Assessment Assignment #2: Assessment Analysis

With the help of your mentor teacher (if traditional resident), identify a formative
assessment/assessment tool that is used within your classroom and administer it.

To score proficient on this assignment your responses must be at least 5-8 sentences long and include
specifics and details. In addition, there need be an additional attachment(s) showcasing the assessment
results.

1. Describe the assessment and attach evidence of implementation (student work with name
removed) to this assignment.

Digital assessment via Great Minds program. Linked with Eureka Math Squared Curriculum. Three
question quiz. Most questions have multiple action boxes for students to select or type their
answer. Question points are weighted differently, depending on how many parts are within each
question. This quiz has a total of 17 possible points.

2. What was the purpose of this assessment - how was it used within your residency placement?
Please be as specific as possible.

We do not do a final assessment after each math module (unit). Instead, we administer short
quizzes after each topic in the curriculum. This helps determine which concepts students are
understanding and what needs reteaching. This module introduces multiplication and division, and
the different properties and strategies used to solve math equations and word problems.

3. Review the assessment results with your mentor and insert or attach results to this assignment.
Please include graphs or tables to help you organize information for better analysis. (Please be
sure to protect the privacy of your students by deleting names).

See attached results.

4. Analyze these results. Identify any trends that might help you design instruction for your
students? What surprises you about these results? (Since such analysis is key to the use of
assessment in planning, you need to provide a detailed analysis).
The students understood determining an unknown number in an equation the best.
What surprised me the most is that students are still struggling with building the array and are
skipping answer boxes. As a class we have worked building arrays and have done practice quizzes
together on Great Minds.

5. How might you design instruction to address the needs of your students highlighted by this
assessment? Identify and discuss at least 4 specific implications for instruction. (Since
instructional decisions based upon the analysis of data is key to building effective lessons, your
answer needs to refer to specific assessment data and include detailed explanations).

The students will practice building arrays both written and with 1 inch cubes. I will reteach and
check for understanding on the definitions of rows versus columns. Numbers of groups and number
in each group gets mixed up frequently as well.

Before the next topic quiz, we will practice using Great Minds for the students to remember how to
use the platform. Being sure they all know how to scroll down on the page and how to find the
answer boxes, so they do not get skipped. I will also monitor and double check their quiz
submissions to ensure all answer boxes are completed. I will reopen quizzes as needed.

I will review and reteach multiplication and division properties and strategies. They understand the
commutative property well, but struggle with decomposition. I will reinforce skip counting and
repeated addition as different strategies to find the unknown.

I will review and reteach math word definitions. The class as a whole struggles with word problems
and translating them into equations. I will have them practice writing their own math word
problems and the appropriate equation(s) that relate.
