In mass communications and journalism, there are different
ways messages are distributed to consumers. With the
changing society today, many individuals use various social
media platforms to find out information. Because there is no
regulation of information on social platforms, it brings up a
notion of media ethics. Is this ethically correct to emphasize
information before it breaks the mainstream news (print or
broadcast)?
GUIDE CARD
Media are the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver
information or data. The term refers to components of the mass media communications
industry, such as print media, publishing, the news
media, photography, cinema, broadcasting, and advertising.
Our lesson today is to Compare and contrast how one particular issue or news is
presented through the different types of media (print, broadcast, online)

DIFFERENCES
Don’t Forget!
Print, Broadcast and online news are similar in that they both apply the use
of the characteristics of news when:
writing stories
they use leads
they have specific organizational patterns for writing and
they both provide consumers with news within their society on a
daily basis.
With print news, the concern is newspaper space and sentences are
between 20-25 words.
With broadcast news, the length of time is a concern, stories being
structured for multitasking consumers, sentences are 10-15 words,
and present tense is always used.
Online new reporting depends on the bloggers on how long they will
render the report.
Print news uses inverted pyramid, which puts the most important
details at the top and least important details are built from the lead
sentence.
In references to leads, print news leads are robust and answer many
of the Ws (who, what, when, where, why/how) in regards to news.
Typical characteristics of print reporting in the pre-2000 period were context- and event-
based reporting, reliance on directives, and use of titles and official positions. Many of
these linguistic features were frequently used together.
The post-2000 sample showed a meaningful shift away from such language and toward
unpacking social and policy issues through character-centered stories, such as
homeless children as a way to discuss homelessness.
Similar to print journalism, television news has shifted from straight reporting that dealt
with complex issues and grounded news in the abstract concepts and values of shared
public matters to a more subjective, conversational, argumentative style of news
presentation.
When comparing broadcast news with prime-time cable programming in the period after
2000, an even more dramatic difference is apparent, with prime-time cable
programming being more subjective, abstract, and directive. However, prime-time
programs on cable news channels tend to be opinion-based shows led by pundits, not
news reporting-based programs, which could influence the comparison.
Online journalism is more personal and direct than print journalism, narrating key social
and policy issues through very personal frames and subjective references.
Now, I believe you are ready to take the assessment! But above anything else, let
us remember that in rendering the news, one need to uphold media integrity.
Media integrity refers to the ability of a news media outlet to serve the public
interest and democratic process, making it resilient to institutional corruption within the
media system, economy of influence, conflicting dependence and political clientelism.
Media integrity encompasses following qualities of a media outlet:
