Assignment of ENG 529

Question

Technology can support learning outside of the classroom by providing

opportunities for independent study, personalized learning, and continued skill
development. Write down five challenges and five benefits of e-learning for
diverse language learners, particularly those from underprivileged communities?

Answer

E-learning Challenges for Diverse Language Learners from

Disadvantaged Societies:
 Unequal access to technology
Most students in disadvantaged communities do not have stable internet, electronic
devices, or electricity to be allowed constant connectivity to e-learning.

 Language insularity
Some learners are not able to understand the e-learning platform and materials
presented because they are mainly in the dominant language.

 Digital Literacy Gaps

Students who do not use technology in school may have problems using most e-
learning tools and platforms, which eventually affect the effectiveness of learning.

 Lack of Cultural Relevance of Content

The time and effort that go into preparing the content of e-learning materials are
developed based on a global or general cultural audience, rather than on any specific
cultural-specific student group.

If there is no actual physical classroom, learners will likely miss the social interaction
and peer support that foster language practice and motivation, precious for language
learners.

Benefits of E-Learning for Language Learners from Poor

Backgrounds
 Flexible Learning Environment:
It provides an opportunity to learn in flexible situations of time. Learning online
can accommodate students with odd schedules, such as those who have to work or
attend to other family matters during the day.

Access to a Wide Range of Resources:

E-learning entry points allow a learner to access a broad view of learning material,
such as videos, games, and exercises, in multiple learning styles and needs.
 Opportunities for Language Practice
Digital toolkits offer pronunciation practice, interactive exercise provision, and
immediate feedback provisions, which promote language acquisition.

 Personalized Learning Pathways

E-learning systems frequently adopt adaptive technologies that present content in the
learner's language and their level of learning, thus more effective and to the point.

 Global Exposure and Connectivity

Connectedness of a learner with native speakers and peers learners in other regions
can lead to increased awareness by the learner of other languages and cultures.
