Hello and Goodbye

a. Informal greetings

When you have got to know somebody better you may say:

 (British) Hello-Hello

 How are you getting on? – Fine, thanks.

 (American) Hi-Hi

 How are doing? – Fine.

You may also hear some other expression such as :

 How’s life? – Not too bad, thanks.

Or :

 Very well, thank you.

 Oh, pretty good.

Good morning is used informally, but not the other ‘times of day’.

Sometimes the person’s name is added:

Morning Jim – Morning

After not seeing someone for some time, you may say:

Nice to see you again.

Really good to see you again.

b. Leaving

Formal or informal:

Goodbye.

Less informal expression are:

Cheerio, Bye Bye now.

If you are going to meet again the same day (soon):

See you later – Fine.

Good night can be used on all occasions after about 8 p.m. when leave-

taking or retiring to bed.

To someone who is leaving for a fair length of time:

Goodbye John, and all the best.

Goodbye Jean, and good luck. Nice dream tonight!

2. Meeting And Greetings

It is usual for a third person to perform introductions in English. He will say:

 This is Mr. Joko … This is Miss Susi Zulaiha (at the same time indicating

each person with his hands).

How do you do? – How do you do?

Or :

 May I introduce you to Mr. Jody?.....… This is Mr.Tedy.

How do you do – how do you do. or Pleased to meet you – Pleased to meet

you. (especially in the USA). Remember that “How do you do” is only used

after introductions, and cannot be used for later meetings.

If there is no third person to introduce you, you can say :

 May I introduce myself? My name is (‘s) Doni.

How do you do? My name is (‘s) Mary.

Note : Men do not call themselves Mr. They use either their Christian name

and surname as above, or just their surname.

Women normally use both Christian name and surname; they may

add Mrs, or Miss to avoid confusion.

Introducing a speaker: widow / widower

 If you are introducing a speaker you should say (indicating the speaker with

your hand):

Ladies and gentlemen, Professor Iwan.

or :

 Ladies and gentlemen, I have great pleasure introducing our guest speaker.

General Subki Anwar.

The next time you meet:

 For the next and later meetings, to people whom you know, you can say:

o Good morning (until about lunch-time-12 midday).

o Good afternoon (till tea-time or just after – 5 to 6 p.m.).

o Good evening (till 12 midnight).

The answers are the same.

Note : Do not say Good day, except in Australia.

Do not used Good evening when leaving. Here Good night is used.

 When you know the person a little better, you may say:

o How are you? I’m fine thanks.

 The answer will be:

o Fine, thanks; or : Very well, thank you.

o Remember that the thank you or thanks should end the phrase, not

begin it.

If you are not well and wish to make this known, say:

o Not very well,

or :

o Not too well, I’m afraid.

Note:

a. It is essential to use rising intonation in “I’m afraid”

b. Most English people only shake hands when they are introduced, or when

meeting after not seeing each other for a long time. They do not how for

introductions.

Nurse Rosa is my favorite nurse, She cares all patients in the ward very
carefully. She is a very good nurse. She always speak calmly and explains

But sometimes she is angry with patients when the patient do not follow the

 Dialogue

Students should work together in pairs and read the following dialogue, one

student reading one part, the other student reading the other. Note, the

expressions used in the dialogue and the progression of the conversation. The

dialogue can be used as a model to have similar conversations.

Pharmacist : Good morning, may I help you?

Customer : Yes, I need this prescription filled.

Pharmacist : OK, it’ll be ready in a few minutes.

Customer : I’ve also had a runny nose for a couple of days, can you

recommend something?

Pharmacist : This decongestant is very effective, but be careful using it.

It causes drowsiness and you shouldn’t drink any alcohol

when taking this it.

Customer : OK, I’ll try it. I also need some band-aides and sun screen.

Where are those?

Pharmacist : The band-aides are on aisle 3, on the left and the sun

screen is on aisle 2, on the top shelf.

Customer : Thanks

Pharmacist : Will that be all?

Customer : That should do it.

Pharmacist : That comes to $34.56.

After reading, close your book and tell your partner a summary of the

dialogue. Then switch and have your partner tell his or her summary. Start

like this: This dialogue is about a man at a pharmacy. He is ...This may seem

silly, since you both already know what the dialogue is about, but the purpose

is to practice using your English, not to give information or test your reading

skills.
