Related How do I prepare for the UPSC exam?

I’m penning down the sources and the exam strategy that I
followed. Happy to share it for the benefit of everyone. This might
also help beginners by giving a direction to their valuable efforts.

Read the exam notification

You must start with reading the exam notification in detail. You will
be aware of the scheme of the examination, syllabus, qualification
criteria etc. This has to be done by the aspirant on his own. You
must also choose your optional subject for mains by going through
the optionals available and their syllabus. You can take guidance of
seniors while choosing optional.

Sources

It is important to choose the right sources from where you would

study the aspects in syllabus. I will mention some good sources
here. This is not an exhaustive list. I referred to other sources too
apart from the below list but only as secondary sources. But even
if you prepare only from these below mentioned sources, you will
be able to get a good rank. Remember that your book collection
and rank are not proportional.

Current affairs: Read newspaper daily. Don’t depend on

The Hindu alone. Read Hindustan times, Times of India
etc. PT 365 by vision IAS during prelims, Mains 365
during Mains. These are current affair compilations which
are arranged subject wise. Current affairs are important
for all subjects. So even when I specifically don’t mention
current affairs in subjects below, take it as said.

Polity: Indian polity by Lakshmikanth , PRS India

legislative research website for information on current
legislations.

Geography: NCERTs, Physical geography by G C Leong.

Art and culture: Indian art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Ancient history: visionIAS material

Medieval and modern history: NCERT, 11th and 12th

class Tamilnadu state textbooks, A brief history of modern
India by spectrum.

World history: VisionIAS material. Focus on key aspects

and don’t try to memorise everything. Your understanding
is more important here than event dates.

Economy: Indian economy by Shankar Ganesh, Economic

survey, Union budget.

International Relations: Focus on current affairs, watch

Big picture debates on RSTV. This show covers
international relations well.

Environment: Shankar IAS academy’s Environment book.

Take the latest edition.

science and technology: Focus on current affairs

Ethics: ‘Lexicon’ book for ethics, integrity and aptitude.

You need not read static content regarding thinkers. It’s
not being asked. Focus on key terms such as integrity,
aptitude, ethics, values, morality, qualities needed for
public service, 2nd ARC report recommendations etc.
Practise case studies. Your writing ability counts more
than your preparation in ethics paper.

Security: Read about current security threats and

develop understanding of multiple security threats to
India including cyber threats. NIA,UAPA amendment acts
and such security related legislations.

Disaster management: Sendai framework, National

Disaster management plan. Focus on recent disasters
across India and the world.

Optional (Sociology): Essential sociology by Nitin

Sangwan is a good source . NCERTs of Sociology help
you in basics.

Note: Preparation for prelims and mains overlaps. So I mentioned

sources subject wise rather than compartmentalising them into
prelims/mains or even paper wise in mains. It is important to
address the question asked from the knowledge you gained. Do
not worry about where you have read it from. Aspects you read in
one subject might be very helpful in answering a question in a
different paper as well. Your preparation must be holistic.

Also, some subjects are part of prelims and are not present in
mains. Vice versa. You need not read world history, ethics, society,
international relations for prelims but are present in mains. You will
have to read ancient, medieval and modern history for prelims but
only modern history is present in mains.

Exam Strategy:

Prelims,Mains and Interview need three different strategies. Each

stage is unique in what it demands.Have a look at the prelims,
mains question papers of 2019 available on UPSC website.

Prelims strategy:

Objective in prelims must be to score a comfortable score of at

least 110 to 120 in the prelims GS paper.

One must not aim to answer questions which he/she has no idea
of. There will be at least 10 such questions out of the total 100.
They are better left unanswered to avoid negative marks pulling
down your hard earned marks in questions that you know for sure.
You can take an intelligent guess in few questions that you are
aware of.

Being thorough in current affairs will fetch you good marks in

prelims. Also questions from current affairs are the ones that you
can mark at one go without wasting time on second thoughts. Be
careful while marking with pen as a bubble once marked cannot be
changed. You will also have to bubble your roll number on the OMR
sheet with caution.

Prelims is dynamic with weightage to each subject changing every

year. But good preparation will surely make you qualify the exam.

Coming to strategy to prepare, it’s good to write sectional tests in

prelims before taking any grand tests. Finishing a section of
syllabus, say, ancient history and then writing test in it is what I
would suggest. This way, you will be able to finish the entire
syllabus with greater single minded focus. By the time you finish all
the sectionals, you will realise that your scores in grand tests
improves drastically.

Paper 2: The second paper in prelims consisting of logical

reasoning, Quant, English must be easy for most aspirants. The
qualification criteria here being just 33 percent marks out of 200.
But i suggest you take this paper too seriously and write few
mocks, to ensure your preparedness in it is same as you think. You
can work on areas in this paper where you can improve.

Mains strategy:

Answer writing is crucial for marks in mains. Mock tests help you in
improving ability to address the question well. Write answers with a
free mind. Do not try to just reproduce what you have read. Your
answer must be coherent, well reasoned and a meaningful
presentation.

Essay:

Common mistake which most aspirants do is that they neglect

essay paper. They think that their knowledge in general studies will
help them write a good essay in the exam hall. This is a flawed
approach.

Preparing notes for essay is crucial. Common essay topics such as

education, health can be prepared beforehand. Making note of
relevant examples, facts, current issues, government initiatives,
quotes, figures, international experiences and comparisons will
improve the quality of the essay.

Choosing the right essay to write in the exam is also important.

Choose an essay that you are most comfortable with. Make use of
the choice that the essay paper is offering you.

General studies papers:

It is important to give enough time to all the 20 questions in

GS1,2,3 and 19 questions in ethics. With right preparation and
approach, it’s an easy task. I feel very happy that in mains I was
able to present everything that I wished to, within the stipulated
time of 3 hours.

GS paper 1:

Focus on understanding the big picture rather than detail.

Especially true in world history. Will explain with an answer I wrote
in the 2019 mains exam. It’s on how American and French
revolutions changed the world. Rather than mentioning any
specific events and dates, I explained how ideas such as All men
are born free, no taxation without representation, concept of
written constitution etc of American revolution and rule by people,
equality-liberty-fraternity and rights of man of French Revolution
changed the world forever.

It is important to be thorough in basic concepts of geography such

as climate, landforms. In modern history, tamilnadu textbooks of
11th and 12th give a concise and easy way to cover syllabus.
Newspaper reading helps in answering questions on society. Be
well aware of various art and culture aspects by listing down at
least one example that you can quote relevantly.

GS paper 2:

International relations must be focused apart from Polity. Big

picture debates on RSTV with former ambassadors and High
commissioners sharing their expertise is the perfect learning
source, as the questions are dynamic. I did not miss a single
debate. Mains 365 of IR must be read as if it’s a textbook.

In Polity, concentrate on current legislations and issues rather than

static. PRS legislative research website is a wonderful source for
current legislations tabled or passed by the Indian Parliament. I
even made notes out of it.

GS paper 3:

By going through the GS paper 3 question paper this year, you will
realise how important it is to have answer writing ability. It helps in
answering well, questions that you don’t usually expect.

Economic survey part 1 must be read well. You can start with
reading the summaries of all chapters given at the end of each
chapter. Part 2 mostly has figures, statistics in most chapters.
Summary of budget is presented in PRS website. Current issues in
Environment, security, S&T, Disaster management must be
focussed.

Ethics,Integrity and aptitude:

This tests your answer writing ability to the best as there is low
scope to reproduce what you memorised. You must keep track of
time too in this paper as one might spend time in thinking about
the answer to present. Practise will make it easier.

Practical, feasible and legal solutions must be given in your

answers to Case studies. For questions in part 1, making notes of
quotes, current issues and examples will help.

Optional (Sociology):

Optional and essay are crucial for scoring well. In sociology, I

primarily followed Essential sociology book by Nitin Sangwan. I
also did M.A in sociology through distance mode while I was
working in IT.

It is important to take feedback on your answers from faculty by

writing test series. Rajitha madam of Shankar IAS helped me a lot
in my answer writing. I wrote sociology mock test series in Rajitha
madam’s guidance and it greatly improved my answer writing
ability. Madam would give me personal feedback through Skype
video call after evaluating my script as I was in Hyderabad.

Personality Test:

Prepare on your DAF 1 and 2. While one cannot predict the

questions that they might ask, being well prepared for the
interview helps us in presenting ourselves better. Give honest, well
reasoned, polite answers. Mock interviews help. Do one to one
mocks with peers.

My interview which was supposed to be on March 31, 2020

happened on July 30,2020 due to COVID. I kept preparing on
current affairs and DAF.

Having good sleep before the day of interview is important. I had a

relaxed, proper sleep. Eat well before you go to UPSC building. If
you are hungry, it would reflect in your voice, expressions, energy
etc. In interview, remember that how well you reason the answer is
more important than the answer itself.

Finally, this is just my strategy and I would advice you to evolve

your own, based on what suites you best. Right strategy and
preparation will surely give you success. All the best!

Be mentally prepared. Be prepared for the fact that this
exam will take toll of a lot of your lifestyle. Be prepared for
the fact that competition is tough and it might take some
failures before touching the success finally.

Read interviews of some people who have cleared the

exam. Find how every topper is different from other and

Preparing for the UPSC geophysics exam as a physics student is

definitely possible with the right approach. While geophysics is a
specialized field, having a strong foundation in physics can be very
beneficial. Here are some steps you can take to prepare:

1. Understand the Syllabus: Familiarize yourself with the

UPSC geophysics exam syllabus to know the specific
topics you need to cover.

2. Study Geophysics Topics: Dedicate time to studying

geophysics-specific topics such as seismology,
geomagnetism, geotectonics, and geophysical
exploration methods. You can use textbooks and online
resources to delve into these areas.

3. Practice Past Papers: Solve previous years' question

papers to get a sense of the exam pattern and to gauge
your preparedness.

4. Seek Guidance: Consider seeking guidance from

geophysics experts or joining coaching programs that
specialize in UPSC geophysics exam preparation.

5. Supplement with Physics Knowledge: Leverage your

strong physics background to understand the underlying
principles of geophysics. Concepts such as mechanics,
thermodynamics, and electromagnetism often have
applications in geophysics.

Remember that while focusing on physics is advantageous,

dedicating time to specifically study geophysics topics is crucial
for success in the exam. Good luck with your preparations!

Related Is physics a good optional subject for the UPSC?

Thanks for A2A….

Physics optional is a subject which is reasonably popular amongst

IAS aspirants. Statistics suggest that 13% of the candidates who
selected physics as optional subject got recommended for
interview round. It is the branch of science concerned with the
nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of
physics includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound,
electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.

Who should opt for Physics as an optional subject?

Remember you should opt for the subject when you love the
subject. UPSC is like that only Without strong interest it gets
complicated believe me. For students with physics background
should go for it.

What are the perks of having physics as optional?

Being a science subject, there is no scope for interpretation you

know what you know and you don’t what you don’t it is as simple
as that. If you know the answer and can write it satisfactorily, you
will get good marks. Remember nothing is subjective here.

You can score through numerical problems if you practice well

enough, it will come with time.

You can score well by drawing more diagrams.

Physics optional can be your scoring point subject if you have a

solid base.

What are the things to be kept in mind while preparing for the
exams?

One thing that must be borne in mind is that UPSC doesn’t test
candidates’ proficiency in physics as they are not a recruiting for
professor or a scientist. UPSC wants to test how good an
administrator one can become from the way he writes the answers.
So while being good in Physics is important, it is also equally
important to perform during those 3 hours for each paper in terms
of quality, speed and choice of questions. Also while only arriving
at numerical results may not fetch good marks as in Physics
writing relevant theory for each question asked is also a necessity.

Paper 2 of Physics optional is more based on theory. At the same

time one must also learn not to write unnecessary things to
showcase their knowledge as this may irritate the examiner.
Usually examiners are experienced professors of Physics and they
look for quality in answer as they know what is important and what
is not and not. For every topic one studies in Physics, one must
also memorize basic definitions and while answering, use these
definitions either in words or in an equation format.

If a particular phenomenon is talked about explain the theory in

words rather than to rely on a mathematical expression.

What else?

Making hand written notes, when you have to revise a lot in a very
limited time you should make your own notes.

Diagrams that you draw make sure they are neat and clean. Learn
not to irritate the examiner.

Solve all the last year paper in as proper way as you can, initially it
will take time but will prepare for how to write the exam.

What are the books one should refer for UPSC 2019?

A Dictionary of Physics – Goldstein

Nuclear Physics -S.B Patel

Quantum Physics- Resnick & Eisberg

Concept of Mordern Physics – Arthut Bevser

Quantum Mechanics -Ghatak & Loknathan/Chatwal & Anand/Satya

Prakash

Atomic Physics – J. B. Rajan

Atomic & Molecular Spectra -Rajkumar

Solid State Physics -Kittel

Related How do I crack the UPSC combined geoscientist

exam?
Combined Geoscientist Examination has three parts in total just as
civil services.

1.Preliminary

2.Mains

3.Personal Interview.

You need to qualify prelims first to write mains and then mains to
attend the interview.

Let us first talk about prelims. If you are currently studying your
Msc, you first need to be very thorough with the concepts and
theoretical part. Not much depth, but a basic understanding would
be enough. Along with Geology, good grip on general studies helps
to stand in the top list. Its not a big deal to clear prelims if you've
graduated from a top college (I meant guided by good profs).

Now the main part. The exam covers a hell lot of syllabus. First
take the syllabus copy and read it thoroughly. Analyse what you
already know. That would give you some confidence. Start with a
chapter you know well. Firstly, if you are preparing Unit 1 from
paper 1, download all the available previous papers from the UPSC
website and write down all the questions asked from Unit 1. Now
start covering each topic from Unit 1 correlating with the questions
asked. Prepare a detailed notes in your own format. UNDERSTAND
the concepts. Only if you'll understand, you'll remember. Follow
the same pattern for all the units.

REVISION is the key. As there's a lot of syllabus, frequent revision

only would help you remember in the examination. Along with
revising, write down the answers in your own way. Practice writing
again and again that too very fast. As time will not be sufficient to
complete atleast 170 marks paper, fast writing would help score
well. Most importantly, your answer presentation matters a lot. I've
heard that the papers are evaluated by retired geologists who are
quite old. They donot have much patience to read long answers.
So try to present in a pictorial or tabular format which makes it
easier to understand how smart you are. So along with writing,
practice making diagrams so that you can make them in lesser
time.

IMPORTANT⸺Keep your calm all the time. Donot, I repeat

DONOT panic. All the pressure gives a lot of stress which will
ultimately make you loose your concentraion. But, you need to
keep yourself calm and centred.

▪︎Learning all the previous questions covers 80% of the syllabus.

Read this for more guidance.

Related What is the future by selecting space physics and

geophysics in an MSc in physics?
First of all if you want to opt for geophysics then it wouldn’t come
under the domain of M. Sc Physics you either have to do M. Sc in
Geophysics or M. Sc(tech) whatever it is so both are different
courses and things and after Geophysics you would have options
to go in the oil industries mainly as a geophysicist via either
campus placement or GATE and also you would have research
opportunities and if you want do M. Sc in Space physics
specialisation then also it is good you would have to go for
research here and i would say that if you have interest and got a
good institute then you can go for it as the field is not that easy to
get a job. Geophysics is also same bt here you would have job
opportunities after completing post graduation.

Hope this will help you.

No it's just an assumption physics student are good at physics……

Then there would no matter of other topics….

Just think why UPSC added other topics than physics…..

The rest of the topics are going to decide u r final result.

Normally people concentrate only physics leaving other topics but

the one who covers all the topic in 3 papers would appear in the

this I will study an MSc in geophysics, which entrance
exam will I face? Will it be easier for me or not?
Hello, if you would like to pursue geophysics further then you
would have to appear for IIT-JAM ( Physics) and then during
counseling you would get chance to choose IITs having M.Sc
geophysics and other than this there are universities having
geophysics course too like BHU, Kurukshetra, Andhra etc. so you
may go for these too bt at first give your best in JAM.

Now, for easier part if you are asking about exam then it's upto you
and your preparation as in JAM you have to appear for physics
only which is your http://b.sc subject too and if you are asking
about coursework then also it wouldn't be tough for you , it would
be easier than Physics.

But at the end I would like to suggest you that try to be in Physics
if possible as this field is now too much uncertain rest is upto you.

Hope this will help you.

RelatedHow should I start my preparation for the UPSC

when I'm doing my BSc in physics (1st year)?
Two cources

No problem if your target is UPSC.You have to manage one hour

daily for the UPSCabd remaining for your Bsc.Bsc in physice is not
easy if you fail then one year more required so in my opinion you
have to give less time for UPSC.Keep main target at this time for
your Bsc.

It can be given 9/10. The faculties are really good as I am taking its

Pros:

It is affordable.

Good facculties

Quality of notes is good.

Weekly test is of upsc level.

Cons:

No one to one mentorship.

Doubts clearing feature is below avarage.

I never got answer of my technical issues, I had with app.

Over all, I'll suggest to anyone to go for it. As its faculties are good

geophysics exam of the UPSC?
Being a Geoscience Graduate, I have had the previlege of reading
a number of books on geophysics.

Here I am suggesting some classical reads as well as some new

books that treat the same matter more effectively.

Considering UPSC exam, these books will serve the purpose

however, there are certain questions that are asked from Pure
Physics section.

1. Fundamentals of Geophysics by William Lowrie.

2. (OR) Physics of the Earth by Stacey.

3. Applied Geophysics by Telford

4. (OR) An introduction to applied and environmental

Geophysics by John M. Reynolds.

5. Physics by Halliday, Walker and Rensick for pure physics

part.

Related Can I be eligible for the UPSC after graduation in
geophysics BSc with 45 percentage complete graduation
in geophysics six years?
As far as Civil Services Examination held by UPSC is concerned , a
degree from a recognized University is enough. Subjects of
graduation do not matter. Number of years taken in completing the
graduation also do not matter.

However CSE requires 100 % dedication, hardwork, sincere effort

and a methodical approach. Here no pass percentage is involved.
Here you compete and try to excel your 5 lakh other competitors
who come from diverse background and might be putting in better
effort.

this I will study an MSc in geophysics, which entrance
exam will I face? Will it be easier for me or not?
If you are certain to do a MSc in Geophysics, the following are the
colleges in India that have a courses for the same. The list is in no
particular order.

1. IIT- Bombay

2. BHU - Banaras Hindu University

3. IIT- Kharagpur

4. IIT - Dhanbad

5. Andhra University - Vishakhapatnam

6. Kurukshetra University

7. National College Tiruchirapalli

According to the college you choose, you’d have to give entrance

examination for that.

hons. How should I start preparing for the UPSC exam?
Originally Answered: I'm a first year undergraduate student (Physics Hons.). How
shall I start preparing for UPSC exam from now?

The new syllabus which was brought in during 2013 made the
graduation degree irrelevant. The scope of syllabus is broad now
,concentrated mostly on current problems india is facing. Also one
should have strong fundamental kowledge on the general studies
subjects in order to clear prelims. As the weightage for the
optionals is reduced,so every one will be having equal opportunity
for clearing the examination.

I suggest you to follow the news papers (The hindu) which deal
with current affairs and also try to read ncert books for general
studies.

GATE/NET/SET/JAM for physics/maths is harder than any other
science or engineering specialization, BSc/BS pure physics or
BSc/BS/BA maths being harder than any other bachelors degree.
So generally competitive exams meant for us are harder than any
other branch exams.

should I learn extra to excel in geophysics?
Geophysics is a field of study that applies the principles of physics
to the study of the Earth, its structure, and its dynamics. As a BSc
Physics student interested in geophysics at IITB, some of the most
important topics to focus on include:

1. Mechanics: Mechanics is a core topic in physics and

provides the foundation for many concepts in geophysics,
including the study of seismic waves and the dynamics of
the Earth's crust.

2. Electromagnetism: Electromagnetic waves are used

extensively in geophysics to study the Earth's magnetic
field and to conduct surveys of the subsurface.

Related Should I take physics as an optional in the UPSC?

It depends upon your education background. It is very good
optional for physics /engineering background student.

Before opting for this optional one must have to understand that …

1. It is more about theory/concept rather than problem

solving.

2. Time taking optional.

3. Nothing overlaps with GS syllabus.

However there are several advantage of physics optional

1. Fixed syllabus nothing comes out is syllabus given

2. Once u mastered the subject , nothing to worry you will

score a decent mark.

3. Your marks will definitely increase in subsequent

There is a reason it is called geophysics. As it covers everything

from the core of the earth through to the magnetosphere there
aren’t many areas of physics that aren’t relevant. Everything you
can get from a high-school physics course will be relevant and
helpful, except possibly for the surface-deep descriptions you get
