3.3 Rules of Logarithms
3.3 Rules of Logarithms
Learning Objectives:
1. The student will be able to use the product rule for logarithms.
2. The student will be able to use the quotient rule for logarithms.
3. The student will be able to use the power rule for logarithms.
4. The student will be able to expand logarithmic expressions.
5. The student will be able to condense logarithmic expressions.
x
Quotient Rule: log a = log a x − log a y
y
CAUTION: There is no property of logarithms to rewrite a logarithm of a sum or difference. That is why you cannot
rewrite log3 ( x + y) as log 3 x + log 3 y . The distributive property DOES NOT apply in a situation like this because
log3 ( x + y) is one term. The abbreviation “log” is a function name, not a factor. So, log3 ( x + y) log3 x + log3 y .
